Florida State ID Card?

If my son lives in Florida and I live with him over the winter months, can I get a Florida state ID card showing his address for the purpose of taking advantage of the various discounts offered Florida residents? What does the state require for obtaining a state ID card?

Esentially it is a certified birth certificate, social security card, and a photo ID such as your homestate drivers license. They do not ask for proof of residency in Florida.

But wouldn't you have to forfeit your homestate drivers license in order to obtain a Florida DL or ID?

I seriously doubt that you will be able to get any FL resident discounts if you are not a permanent, full-time resident of Florida.

There are two types of DL. The regular one (which I have) you do have to give up your other state's drivers license. There is also another DL which is good in FL only. From the FAQ page:
* Part-time residents may elect to retain their valid out-of-state license and receive a Florida license which states "Valid in Florida Only."

And for FL ID cards:
Florida Identification Card

* United States Citizen proof of identity and requirements.
* Non-United States Citizen proof of identity and requirements.
* Social Security number if issued.
* Must be 12 years of age or older (No minimum age in Citrus, St. Johns or Monroe counties).
* No test required.
* An original identification card is $3.
* To renew an identification card is $10.

Note: Giving false information on an application for a driver license or identification card is a third degree felony which may result in arrest, and includes a one-year suspension of the driving privilege. Proof of correct address may be required, for example, cancelled mail envelope received.

My in-laws are snowbirds who maintain a part-time residence in Florida, and they are able to get Disney disocunts with their Florida ID. They did not have to surrender their New Mexico driver's licenses because it is just a state-issued ID card. It cost them $3. But they did have to have a valid Florida address. I'm sorry I don't remember what they used to show a valid ID.

I know they have used them for checking in at the Disney resorts. When the CM asks for Florida IDS we all fork them over, and they've never had trouble at check-in as Florida residents. They also have the Florida Resident Seasonal passes.

I think the key wording here is "maintain a part-time residence in Florida". If they own property in Florida, and live part of the year here, then they are Florida residents, even if only part time.

I don't think that if you live with any of your relatives (i.e., you don't have the power bill, phone bill, cable bill, etc.) to show you have a residence here, that you would be given a FL ID card.

Oh, I think you're probably right about that. But you never know. I used to work at TDS near the Florida border and we would get all kinds of people who wanted to get Florida IDs or passes. I would just refer them to the park for more specific pass requirements (or if they didn't believe me that they couldn't qualify if they owned an uncleared, uninhabitable 1/32 of an acre in Florida) and the DMV for ID questions.

DH and I were just allowed (actually ENCOURAGED) to purchase Florida Resident AP's, based on our ownership of a "half built" home in Florida. We had to bring a copy of our deed and tax bill (showing that it wasn't a timeshare!) when we purchased the AP's, and it was suggested we have the same with us until we get Florida DL's or ID's, in case it was questioned at the turnstyle. We also brought the purchase contract so they could see it wasn't a timeshare.

Considering that we are already paying taxes, a mortgage, and home owners association dues on the house we are building, I'm in the same boat as many snow birds, as a part time FL resident, full time FL homeowner.

I agree with the majority here, I'm pretty sure that you just need a valid FL address to get the FL ID card. Military members that are FL residents can also retain or regain their FL driver's license with an out of state address.

I think anyone can get an ID....FL address or not (think college students, military, children, etc.).

That's why Disney requires that it have a Florida address. Only residents can get licenses, so that's covered. Since ID's are available to anyone, they add in the address requirement.

And to answer your next question, YES, they do check the DL or ID when you exchange your voucher for the actual pass at the guest services window. One license/ID required for each adult pass. AND they sometimes ask for it at the turnstiles as well, like when the scanner isn't reading your card correctly.

As for whether you can get an ID with his address, that's up to you and the DMV, but with all the security, folks are cracking down on info requested for these forms. Personally, I'm not sure how they validate the address you give them.
