Ive been out of town all week at my mother's in Mobile. I drove in last night and only this morning had a chance to assess our situation. Ugh! We've got black mold the length of one wall, the wall itself is soft to a height of 5 feet. We had several inches of water come through the wall, across the floor, under another wall and out yet another wall. Books, Christmas stuff, cellphones, a heater, a video game console, a printer, all wet. Thank GOD I had cleaned out the basement 3 weeks ago when my DS moved out--we would have lost a LOT more if I hadn't cleaned things up and put them away. All told we have damage in two closets, and four walls. And that's just in the heated part of the basement.
In the storage part we have one corner that is wet to a height of 5 feet and the wall is crumbly next to the floor. Our sump pump broke sometime on Monday and poured water into the crawl space. Thankfully we do not have flooring in the basement--we were supposed to have that put down this week but the rain came in. So now we have a several week wait to get the basement thoroughly dry before we lay down our flooring
Hopefully, Travelers(insurance) will do the right thing. I was so depressed when I pulled the baseboard away from the wall and it just crumbled in my hands. Water just gushed out. Even the concrete floor has some mold on it. I know our situation is nothing compared to those who have lost everything, but it really is amazing how much damage a few inches of water has done.
