Anyone know when the best time to book is? Right now I'm having a hard time finding anything reasonable for our dates... May 20/May29. I think the lowest I've found is $550RT per person. Most of the sites say it's $300 pp then changes it to almost double when you go to check out.

When did you book your flights for Alaska and how much did you pay? Hoping prices change/drop over time....

Have you used kayak.com? They will show you all the airlines and compare prices, then you just go to the airline site and grab that price. That's how we got such tremendous flights last year for London. I checked for months and suddenly one Sunday morning the price plummeted. I grabbed the flights and within a few hours the prices had gone back up again! They say checking Sundays and Tuesdays are the best days. Good luck.

Also consider doing what we did when we did Alaska out of Vancouver. We flew to Seattle (much cheaper) and took the Amtrak train from Seattle to Vancouver. It is a gorgeous ride and the views are amazing. It actually saved us hundreds. Of course, we did stay in Seattle a couple of days to make it fun and see another city. If you want details, let me know.

Another recommendation for setting an alert on Kayak. The reality of air travel today is that there is no "best time" to buy. No, buying on a Tuesday will not get you the best fare. No, buying as soon as the flights are released won't get you the best fare. No, buying at 12:01 won't get you the best fare. And so it goes. In today's market, fares change almost by the minute.

The best strategy is to use a fare alert on Kayak to monitor prices between your airport and Vancouver (or other destination) for a while so you get an idea of what the prices are. Once you see one that you can live with, go ahead and book it.

I've travelled the other way (Vancouver to Orlando) a few times and it can be a challenge to find deals. One disadvantage for you is that May 20 is a holiday weekend in Canada (Victoria Day) and then the 29th is Memorial Day in the states so you hit them both! Is there any way to adjust your dates by a few days? Sometimes you can save enough by changing dates to cover the cost of a couple nights hotel and then you get a longer trip for the same price!

Overall though, I've had the best luck booking farther out rather than last minute. I've had good luck with Alaska Air and Westjet, although you have to look at the flight times carefully; they like to offer overnight flights that have you stranded in another airport for five or six hours in the middle of the night. ("Hey, that's a good price......no wait, it lands in San Jose at midnight then continues to Vancouver at five am!") Price alerts are great too, but I've had the best luck just saving my searches and checking whenever I happen to be on my computer. Familiarize yourself with the prices, know what you want and be prepared to book right away if you see what you want. Good luck!

Like @deanimal I've booked the opposite direction as well. We are flying to Orlando from Vancouver this coming January. We booked 7 months out and paid $475pp Canadian (with the current exchange that is a bit less than $400USD). I kept checking skyscanner, hopper and flighthub constantly (like 2-3 times a day) until I saw a price (and times!) that we thought was reasonable. Lots of people fly into Seattle and then take the train or drive up to Vancouver. Going the other direction we found it was more expensive for us to fly out of Seattle than Vancouver. Flight times were also horrible. Good luck! But I would definitely say the earlier you book the better price-wise.

Thoughts...
  • I usually see sales around September and January each year.
  • some travel sites offer you a refund for price drops
  • some say 2 months is the when airline prices start to climb
  • I plan things 2 weeks out.... when I know I don't need to cancel for work

Have you considered flying into Seattle and renting a car. That's what we did. We are renting a car one way and able to drop off at Canada Place. We are coming from Vegas, not Orlando, but the difference in price was $250 a ticket. There are six of us. :)

Have you thought about driving? It would be a good way to see the country. According to Google Maps it's only 47 short hours each way.

We're on the same cruise! :) I have the Alaska airlines credit card that has a companion fare as one of the perks (though card has annual fee-- so, it's not free). Our R/T on the same dates from Texas to Vancouver is running about $350/pp/RT. So seeing your post, I'm thinking we should be good with this!
