I have and love a Cannon S3IS, I mostly zoom in and out, and don't use any of the other features. My camera stopped working, won't turn on and my lens is all the way out. A local camera shop request $154 to send out and fix with a 6 month guarntee or would you just upgrade to the S5IS.

Thanks in advance??:confused3
PS it is approx 3 years old

is the $154 total or will they add shipping and tax. if they are going to add shipping and tax i would upgrade

You can find a new S3 for about twice what they are asking to fix your old one. For about 200 dollars more, you can get a new S5.

Since you only use the zoom and none of the other features, I'd fix yours.

I would send it in to Canon to fix or replace. There was a thread here a couple of weeks ago about something like this, and Canon sent the person a new S5 IS because it couldn't be fixed. If they can fix it, great. If they can't, maybe you'll get lucky.

if you are brave, and only after you have decided to buy a new camera... you might want to try this..

I had a friend with a similar problem, he was going to throw the camera away, I asked if he was certain he wasn't going to send it for repair.

I then very gently while holding the on switch, gently rotated and forced the lens in, it seems their was a piece of dirt or sand, jamming the lens, since it wouldn't go back in to completely shut off, it wouldn't turn on...after I did what I just described, the camera functioned fine, he is still using it a year or so later..

people have fixed this type of problem before I just can't remember where I read it recently, maybe ask on photography boards like http://s3users.com/forum/index.php or http://www.dpreview.com/forums/

Thank you everyone, some good advice. The lady at the camera shop had tried to "force" the lens around trying to get it to retract with no luck?? I will check out those boards and see what they offer! I also checked local stores and it is on sale for $299 (the S5IS). I will also contact Canon for possible repair!!

Thank You so much!

WOW, I can't believe a store employee would do that, also make sure batteries are good, and terminals in camera are clean, then try forcing it,,if you decide to get a new camera of course..I wouldn't risk making it worse if you are going to send it for repair..

if you want to drive up to PA, I'll try fixing it for ya..:thumbsup2
