First Timer typical mistakes

I can go to Ohana's at 7:00 on a Friday night without a PS:rolleyes:

We should be able to leave our hotel at 8:45 to be at the MK for the 9:00 opening...:hyper:

BF at Disneyland, the first trip for both of us in over 10 years:
"We don't need a map, I know how to get to Splash Mountain..." then we came upon a wall that was blocking something under construction.

We could see Splash Mountain from where we were standing, but we had to go all the way around to get there!!! Needless to say, I made him go into a store to get a map.

My co-worker's girlfriend:
"My first trip to WDW, I only took $20 with me!"

Hey, it's 2:55.............let's go find a spot on Main Street for the 3:00 parade!

Since I read the DIS before going I didn't make too many on my first trip, but I did make these:

1. Let my DGD drag me to Liberty Tree Tavern's bathroom upstairs. I think there was only one stall and it took forever as there was a line. Our waiter thought we'd skipped without paying and they cleared our table...we weren't done eating. Have your kids, or yourself for that matter, go to the bathrooms out in the parks before entering the restaurants.

2. Scheduling PS's at different parks than where I was planning on being that night. I thought it would only take a couple minutes to park hop.

3. Using a travel agent and booking a package. I'd already done it before I found the boards.

4. Wearing blue jean shorts and riding Kali River Rapids. Chaffing!

5. Putting Moleskin on the chaffing between my thighs. When the moleskin came off, so did all my skin. Ouch! Actually, this wasn't my first trip.

I took a newbie friend with me this last time. Here's questions that were possed to me before we got there and some mistakes she made even with me right there advising her:

1. Can you see the castle from Epcot?

2. Didn't use sunscreen! Two trips to the doctor when she got back home for sun poisoning. I told her and told her, I swear.

3. I don't feel like lugging around a water bottle. Then she didn't want to shell out $2.50 for a bottle of water. Her DGD7 who never drinks after anyone was begging us to drink our water.

4. Bringing one pair of tennis shoes and one pair of flip flops.

5. The biggest. She didn't thank me for bringing her and her granddaughter along with us. We stayed at BCV on my points and I even paid for her room for the two nights we were at AKL after BCV. Not one thank you. That'll be the last time she goes with me! ;)

because we're only going once...

After over a year of obsessive DIS board planning I, of course, thought we could see it ALL or almost at Christmas-time with all that I learned from these Boards. Hah! 2 1/2 weeks in Orlando rushing through rides, every parade, every show (almost!), Universal, IoA, SeaWorld....

We all appreciate how much we did manage (THANK YOU all on these Boards!) & laugh about the many big things we didn't see -- like what's inside "The Ball" as my DH calls it (Epcot) that I frequently rushed the family past. And don't get us started on our whirlwind trip around the world with the kids in Epcot...

We are all looking forward to the trip that wasn't supposed to happen -- the NEXT one! -- early December 2005! Hope those Osborne Lights are back to stay.

Staying off-site, "only two miles from Disney World"!

Paying Rack Rate *gasp!* for our resorts!!! (and unfortunately we weren't even 1st timers!) Thanks to these boards, that mistake won't be happening again! ;)

"The shortest route is through Fantasy Land."

In June, after noon. I don't remember where we were going to or from but I do remember thinking we could have gone via Epcot and gotten there faster. Also had my feet rolled over several times by strollers.

" Don't worry, I never get blisters"

Not making PSs when you are going during busiest time of the year (April vacation, 4th of July week)

Charlesand Camilla- I love the comment about FantasyLand:D

Going during Easter break and trying to do to much to fast and not taking time to relax! (So much to see!)

I think the biggest mistake a first-timer can make is general lack of planning. People don't realize how much they should research WDW ahead of time and how that research will make their trip SO much more pleasurable. But, I can see how people don't want to have to "study" for vacation. :p

"Hey, if we get to MK early, we might get picked to open the park!"

Arrived 45 minutes before the park opened. Already 100 people there. I think some of them had sleeping bags.

Never, ever, ever, ever put something like this on broken or injured skin. Moleskin and duct tape should be put on healthy skin to prevent the injury.

Going to WDW without some sort of plan....and wasting away the day trying to figure out where to go and what to do.

hate to see that happen....time is money, especially at WDW!!!

WA

Not taking the time to look at the map of the property roads! The first time we went we just kept seeing that lifeguard looking chair thing for DVC at the corner of the roads! WE kept going around the roads so make sure to read every sign because sometimes it is a little tricky to find each park and the way back to the hotel!!! Now we laugh everytime we see that little DVC thing!

The greatest mistake I encountered was one my family benefitted from. We were MK at EE during Easter Week, Pouring Rain...Not only were we among a handful of people at the turnstiles, but we conquered Everything in Fantasyland in under an hour!! We ran around in beautiful temperatures, with our ponchos flying!! It was awesome!! I guess some people are made of sugar and may melt in the rain!!

Let's hop over to the Crystal Palace for a quick bite to eat!

A follow-up please!!! I want to hear what this resulted in! :)

And to another poster, what's wrong with one pair of tennis shoes and one pair of flip flops? I get by on this every single time.

Our mistake was not a first-timer one, since we go every year, but a few years ago my mom and i tried to meet in Orlando for a week-long trip. She got stuck in New Orleans because of weather and didn't make it until I'd already spent a day in the parks. It was good in a way, because I did Animal Kingdom and Space Mountain, which she isn't too fond of.

OH! That reminds me, this is our favorite Orlando Airport mistake, trying to meet there before going to the parks together:

"Where are you?"
"I'm standing in front of the whale!"
"No you aren't. I'm there!"
"No you aren't!"

(Apparently a second, identical SeaWorld shop popped up on the other side of the terminal when we least expected it.)

This time we're meeting in New Orleans two days ahead of our Orlando flight! :)

we were first time mistake makers.....we did plenty, but HERE are a few that stick out in my mind, hence going back again :)- so we can get it right. ( knock on wood)

OK not knowing about the online planning sites, like DISboards, mousesavers and allearsnet.com
( ok AND no park map, afterall it's only one park :confused )
OK we walked past the hall of presidents probly 15 times and had no clue what it was- did not go in.-
( until earlier this year looking at my wdw books) - this year we will know what it is :)
the next one, the castle, thought the only thing to do there was CRT. OK
and the final......going to WDW from WI at the end of june. - we melted by noon - oh by the way, we did go to the park at 11am :(
