First Time Cruising (Disney Dream) Free Food Questions

DH and I ordered from every section and multiple things. I'm wondering if some waiters were off their game so to speak.
I think, if I had a server who told me he'd have to check, I'd ask him to check with the head server. There's really no reason why you should be denied double portions or two entrees, if you want them.

That being said, I would hope you really want to eat all that. I find it rude to get lots of food (just because you can) and then only eat 3 or 4 bites of it. This picture was in Cabanas after a family left because they were "done":

Eww I hate that! Even though Disney cleans DH and I often cleaned up a bit before we left cabanas. We also ate at the restaurants for lunch and we usually finish what we order. Although I try not to judge people who don't eat a lot because I know my diseases make it hard for me to eat at all some days.

The poster did say it was for sushi or lobster, so if they had second seating, it is possible that quantities were limited as I've heard of ships (not necessarily DCL, but cruise ships nonetheless) running out of "specialty" things for the later seating because people at the first seating had so many seconds and thirds. OR possibly to avoid running totally out before second seating limiting the amount available for both seatings so that all who want can get, but not necessarily multiple servings.

True. I've also wondered if special sailings have a bit less. Like the transatlantic or longer cruises.

This is good feedback for others to see. I don't know why things vary so much be server. As I said, they did bring us a soup and an appetizer if we asked for it, but as a group of 9 who hadn't cruised with Disney before, we did feel inhibited by their "suggestion" on the first night. I had read otherwise on the boards here, but at that moment, i thought perhaps I was remembering wrong.

You are right, we had first seating, and didn't want to deprive anyone in the second seating of anything, but when we had a favorite thing, or liked the sounds of two things equally, we wanted to try them. I can promise you we ate what we asked for. My sons are Sushi Fiends. They would bankrupt me at a Sushi restaurant if I let them. We have even made sushi at home. Buying sushi-grade fish doesn't really save you much money over a restaurant, but it is a fun experience.

On the very early DCL sailings (like the first year), the menu listed all of the soups / salads / appetizers in one list. People complained thinking that they could only order one. At that point, menus were updated to list the soups / salads separate from the appetizers so that people could easily understand that they could order a soup or salad and an appetizer. Of course, you can order 2 soups, 3 salads and 4 appetizers if you so desired. In fact typically the server will recommend one of the soups or salads, one of the appetizers, and one of the entrees as the best choices for the night.

I typically order an appetizer, soup or salad, and entree. Sometimes two appetizers and no soup or salad, particularly if there are both hot and cold apps on the menu. I always listen to the server's recommendations and then order what I want. Sometimes my order includes one or more of the server recommendations, sometimes not. On a number of occasions on one of the longer cruises (we've done TAs the last two years), when I've not taken a particular server recommendation, the server brought me a second appetizer or even extra entree because he thought I'd enjoy it. The servers really get to know your preferences on those cruises and work hard to make it an enjoyable dining experience.
