Hi all, We are just home from an extended family trip 1/8-1/14. Trip included myself, DH, DD, DS, my parents, inlaws, and aunt (as well as family from Melbourne who came to visit). The weather was sublime, the food was glutanous (see dining reviews), the parks were empty. DH and FIL played golf at the Palm and LBV courses and loved it. DH said they were the nicest courses he'd ever played on. Liked LBV just a little bit better.

Now, thoughts on SSR. We have previously stayed at VWL, BWV, and BCV. This was the first time in a dedicated DVC resort. While I still think that this was the best decision EVER to make a purchase...I was not as overwhelmed with SSR than say VWL. Here's the pluses: The accomodations are so beautifully appointed. By far, the prettiest room decor of all DVC villas (IMHO), the fitness facility is out of this world! I got up each morning and worked out. It is a first class, state of the art facility. I did not take part in any spa services this trip, but fully intend to in the future! All I can say is WOW! High Rock Springs pool is very cool. Kids (ages 4 and 6) loved it! Especially the slides and zero degree entry.

I really enjoyed Artist Pallette. Great grab and go selection. Not terribly out of the ballpark pricewise (after all, it is Disney). Food was fresh and tasty. Service was friendly and efficient...we'd surely go back.

As for the downside...check in was a nightmare. Now, I realize checking in with a large group can be confusing, but this poor CM just couldn't get it figured out. We'd confirmed 2 two-bedroom units, had 2 vehicles, and I only wanted charging priviledges on my card. Seemed pretty straight forward. I don't know if she was new or something, but it took 20 minutes (no exaggeration) to check in. One room was ready, one was not.

As for the resort itself, the ongoing construction is an eyesore. I fully realize that this is temporary, but it does detract from the beauty of the resort. My biggest gripe of all though is the outside hallways. It truly cheapens the resort. The painted cement floors are tacky, and already grimy. On our departure day it poured down rain like I'd never seen in my life. Needless to say, the rain was blowing through the halls in sheets. We were soaked before even getting to our car. There were puddles in the hallways you had to skirt around. Even the mousekeepers were moving along the walls trying not to get the clean linens soaked. Granted, it doesn't rain like that all the time, but IMHO, the outdoor entries were poor planning and design.

The resort is huge and will only get bigger. The HRS pool is small, no doubt as well as awfully shallow for a main pool. I was also surprised at just how far it is from the Congress Park building (where we were) to the pool, Artist Pallette, and fitness facility. Because we were traveling with elderly folks, I asked if there was any where to drive over, instead of walking. We were told to park by the tennis courts near the DVC center. But if you didn't have a car, that's quite a poke. They also told us that you could wait and use one of the buses between stops. Not exactly a convenience.

I also found that I missed the convenience of being closer to the theme parks. Now, while I wouldn't trade my DVC ownership for anything and I am still so glad we purchased...I think next time we'll just try to rebook elsewhere. I do miss having a sit down table service restaurant to enjoy on site and the size and expanse is a deterrent to staying there. You can't just hop downstairs to hit the pool or gift shop. I almost felt out of the park being so far away.

These are just some of my opinions, so please don't flame me. I'd be curious to hear how others feel. All in all, it was a fantastic week, I can't wait to go back home again, to any of the DVC resorts!!!

Thanks for the report! I still can't wait until our first trip "home" but we've still have quite a few months. No flames here! Welcome back!

I,too, and looking forward to my first trip home in April. It can't come soon enough!

Sorry Kristielee -- but I disagree with your opinions as to what you saw as downsides. Not flaming -- just a difference of opinions. Everyone is going to think different things about different resorts and theming.

I was at SSR Jan. 4-11 and stayed in Building # 4, the most distant Congress Park building. 5 yo DD and I walked to and from HSR pool on the evening of Jan. 9 -- she didn't find it far at all, and neither did I. I was pleasantly surprised to discover that SSR wasn't as expansive as I had been led to believe -- but everyone has a different perception.

As to the construction -- I didn't find it to be distracting or an eyesore. I actually wished I could explore it a little more. Then again, I grew up on construction sites and downloaded the SSR plans as soon as they were posted to the Orange County website.

Didn't see anything wrong with the outside hallways -- nor did I find ours dirty or think that it cheapened the resort. I can see how it might make for a problem with housekeeping and rain with a wind from a particular direction.

The new MYW ticketing options has completely changed the check-in procedures. We checked in on Jan. 4, just 2 days after the new system went into operation and it took the CM a couple of tries to get DD's KTTW just right with her name properly printed. I can imagine it would take even more time adding the MYW tickets with various options and charging privileges, etc.

Thanks for that positive podt royalcanadian.
In terms of the MYW confusion, when my best friend accompanies me in the fall, she is getting her tickets at home on-line first to avoid this confusion.

I also found that I missed the convenience of being closer to the theme parks. The only thing I disagree with is the pool situation. You can just hop down to a pool at Congress Park, the leisure pool is stunning. Also you have tons of gift shops right over the bridge at DTD (5 minute walk) plus the walk to the central area is not too bad. BUt there will be other buildings opening closer to the HRS pool and all the amenities there. So I think once the resort is in full swing it will have plenty of options to stay where you prefer. Either DTD view or closer to the common areas.

Thanks for sharing your observations and opinons about YOUR vacation. The great thing about this board is your allowed to have your own opinions. We don't all have to like one resort or the other its all a personal preference.

Knowing you like no-one else does, I agree with your OPINION.
when we are there,we are not stop Disney crazy!!!(happily)
All I have to say is that they are all lucky not to have to fly with you.
See you in the AM,
Gas girl

Hey Kristie, thanks for the review. I enjoy reading everyone's opinion. I give you a lot of credit for going with so many people and keeping your sanity. We went last year with my family and it was uh, a nightmare! Even my beloved Polynesian couldn't save the trip! :D

disworldnum1~I don't believe any of the posts in this thread were angry or a challenge to kristie's post, just difference of opinion.

I don't think anyone was challenging opinions, either.
I know I was just thanking royalcanadian for his nice post because I am excited to see SSR.

Hey Gas Girl! Xanax and Merlot made a great flying companion THIS trip...yes all, I am just a little anxious about fyling...tehehe :cool1:

I couldn't agree more with your take on SSR. I own there and will be booking all of our stays elsewhere. A Resort isn't a Resort to me when you lug your own luggage and groceries. Where are the shopping carts or bell carts? All places I've stayed that have kitchens have this. How could Disney overlook this? Room service is also a must for us. With a 3 year old who wnats to be at the pool all day and come home and cook or get everyone ready to eat out? Not me. I'll be of the group that will be booking at the 7 month window elsewhere. Thanks for the review.

I'm curious; did you not know that these were time-share condo/apartment type properties? I'm less conversant about time-shares than others; are room service and full bell service usually available at time-shares?

I have yet to take my first trip "home" but we have to take care of moving our own lugguge (having visions of being in the building furthest from check-in and having to drag 10 suitcases to my GV)? :earseek:

Yes, at BWV, BCV, and OKW you get bell services for all your luggage, groceries, and whatever else you want taken from your car to the room.

Are you sure that they don't have bell services at SSR, I find that hard to believe.

Bell service is available at SSR. Pull up to the Carriage House entry way -- they are waiting there for you with luggage carts.

Now here's the kicker -- I think it's more convenient to carry my own luggage. We were at the Congress Park building farthest from the Carriage House. We arrived, checked in, drove to the building, unpacked and set off for HDDR. Much more convenient than waiting for Bell Services to deliver the luggage one has just given them.

I saw Bell Services "hot button" on the SSR telephone -- I'm sure they would come carry your luggage to your car.

The main difference between SSR and places such as BCV, WL, BWV is that one parks right near their room at SSR -- not in a distant parking lot.

In all of our trips to WDW (2 week long trips, family of 5) my DH has never wanted to use Bell services at all. We manage our own luggage. I am interested to know what you thought of the theming of the resort. Was it to for away from the parks to feel like being at WDW???

Hi MagicMouse, Yeah..I personally DID feel like SSR was too far removed fro the theme parks. We don't usually spend much time at DTD (maybe a couple of hours, if there's something specific I want to go over there for). SSR is much closer to the hotels on Hotel Plaza Blvd that any of the other Disney properties. The one good thing though, is that it's close to CrossRoads if you need to do any shopping. I tried the WinnDixie this time and I have to admit, that even though Goodings is more expensive, I like their selection much, much better (but that's for another discussion! LOL)

As for the theming...well, we're from upstate NY (about 50 mi from Saratoga)...and I gotta tell ya....I didn't get the connection. Saratoga, NY is known primarily for horseracing, but there is a huge arts and music community. That'a not saying that SSR isn't beautiful...it's just that it really didn't feel much like Saratoga, NY with its stately old Victorian homes, art galleries, cafes, and of course Saratoga Performing Arts Center. There's hardly a place more elegant than Saratoga, NY in the summertime. But again, that is only my opinion...I'm sure others may feel differently.

As for SSR, yeah, I'd go back, but only if I couldn't rebook elsewhere. It is NICE...it's very nice, but it's just not the same as some of the other DVC resorts. There's something missing. I can't quite put a finger on it. It has a much less "resort" feel and more of a condo feel. But again, that's just me. When I go on vacation, I WANT to feel like I'm at a resort..not a condo. I love the convenience of a kitchen and W/D, but that doesn't mean I necessarily want to use them. After all, we're on vacation.

We just stayed there for three nights in December right after our cruise. Loved the room, absolutely loved the beds. DD loved it too, wants to go back, and we didn't even go to the pool. Could be the flatbread at Artist's Pallette, she thought that was really good.

Not so crazy about feeling isolated and a long way from everything. I was there one morning without the family, they took the car to go scuba diving at Crystal Springs with the manatees. Thought I might head over to DTD, but wound up just staying in the room. I don't know which building we were in, but it looked like a good ways to walk. Luckily, we had food and coffee in the room.

I don't think I will be giving up my 11 month booking advantage at BCV to stay there again.

Can't wait to try SSR for myself...personally, I love the privateness of self-parking and unloading. I am actually quite relieved not to have mousekeeping on a daily basis, after finding myself wondering and worrying if they'll still be in our room when we come back. It's also annoying to come back to a room late in the day to find it still hasn't been touched by mousekeeping. I think one of the things I like BEST about DVC is that no one comes into our room and it feels like our own condo in Florida. Too bad I'm not there for the entire winter!
