Doing a simple thing like getting the girls a puppy could turn into a political discussion. Will a show breeder donate one like some other first dogs? Will they adopt a rescue? What about puppy mills?
Hopefully the girls will be able to enjoy their puppy without it becoming a political debate
I think the DIS should come up with good names for the puppy as a distraction to all the post traumatic election stress.
Not too long ago when Entertainment Tonight (I think that's the show anyway) was talking with the Obamas I think it was mentioned that one daughter had an allergy so it had to be a non-shedding dog. Then it was mentioned that they would like to rescue a dog. As an owner of a dog rescued I was so happy to hear that. Not sure if it will happen but that would be great.
A labradoodle is supposed to generally be an OK dog for those with allergies, though it would be nice if they could pick a shelter dog (aka "mutt") because so many of them are GREAT dogs, are adorable, and become wonderful pets.
I'm sure his children will harangue him till the deed is done. Lord knows I did when my mom made the "mistake" of telling me we could get a dog "one day".
I forget what show it was (Oprah?) where they were asked if the girls were going to get a puppy and he said "maybe" and Michelle said "yes" and you just knew that they were going to get a puppy
I too hope it's a pound pup -- ethical breeders cringe at "first dogs" because they tend to cause a big spike in breed popularity as people jump on the bandwagon. This would be especially true with a less allergenic dog, so I really hope they don't go too exotic. And the last thing we need is more labradoodles.
