First House... Things you never thought you would ever need.

So, as some of you may know from my many, many, many posts on the topic, we are buying our first house. (Sorry... here comes another!!! )

So, we are moving in soon. We've never owned a house, so we have really no idea what kind of unexpected things we should have upon moving in.

Let me preface by saying that the house is a brand new remodel, so nothing at all needs to be fixed, worked on, etc., inside.

We have the basics:

Lawnmower
Rakes
Shovels (because it could start snowing as we are raking )
Lawn bags
Garbage Cans
Tools (DH has a complete Craftsman garage set of tools)
All cleaning supplies, plus buckets, mops, brooms, etc.
Garden hose
Paint and touch-up supplies


So, aside from interior furnishings, which we have taken care of, what else might we find ourselves in need of in a house as we move in?

This might sound stupid but a refrigerator?? Here anyway you take the frige with you when you move (unless it is an apartment) as well as the washer and dryer--Oh and also something over the windows?? -- a trrimmer edger (lawn stuff) and maybe a leaf blower?? HAVE FUN

There IS one in each bathroom, a brand new one attatched to the wall! It still has stickers on it! So do the toilets, tubs and sinks!!!

We have all new appliances, so that is covered. We are getting better washer/dryer, but to edger and leaf blower!

Good point! Thankfully, we have all new plumbing, but still... plunger x2!!!

smoke detectors, carbon monoxide detector, fire extinguisers for kitchen, cellar, and garage , if applicable.
For outside work , a sturdy ladder

window seat for our cat
lawn chairs (now is a great time to great them on sale)


I'll keep thinking as we just bought our first home.

Can you tell me WHERE you have seen good deals on lawn chairs? I haven't seen any in any store lately. You think Home Depot?

Oh, and on that note, we should get a GRILL now, too!!!

Nails, screws, all sorts of doo hickies to hang pictures, curtain rods, shades, blinds, curtains, area rugs, welcome mat and a pretty wreath for your front door.

If everything is brand new in the house, add Goo-Gone to cleaning supplies. Trust me, we built a house 5 years ago and Goo-Gone was the first Home Depot errand. Everything new comes with a label or sticker and there is always something left behind. (lol, after I typed this I saw you mentioned stickers ) Also Mr Clean Magic Erasers.

Does the house have day-night thermostats? If not, change them out. There might be rebates through the utility company for energy star ones.

Ice melt, as soon as it snows Home Depot sells out.

Tools: a level for hanging things up. Picture hooks.

Door stops, there were none in our house and we immediately got a ding in the kitchen wall from no door stop.

We added racks/shelves inside the kitchen cabinets, you can get them at Bed Bath & Beyond or the Container Store. It is a white or silver shelf that doubles the space so you can stack mugs, etc. They are cheap if you get the white ones and they make things so much more organized. Here is an example:

OMG, door stops! I almost totally forgot! So glad I asked now!

And LOL about the Goo Gone. All this talk of stickers and I didn't even think about Goo Gone. I think DH has some with his hunting crap, but I will have to ask!

Congrats on the new home! I agree with the ladder need & others listed prior to this post.

A few other ideas to consider which you may have covered:
- Caulk & a Caulk gun – caulk is your friend for mouldings, bathrooms etc!
- Garage Door Opener
- Sprinklers (if don't have in ground sprinkler system)
- Bath Mats...OK, probably a given, but it seems like for every move we've ended up needing new ones or different sizes!!
- Window Coverings for key rooms that don't have them (blinds, drapes, plantation shutters etc.)
- Level for hanging pics, stud finder, & nails (regular & wall anchors) etc. (which you may have in your tool collection)

Not essential, but consider:
- If you buy a grill purchase a ‘grill pad’ from Home Depot/Lowes to protect the surface underneath.
- An indoor/outdoor temperature/rain guage.
- AND FINALLY, a hammock to actually kick back & enjoy your new home.

What a good idea! Didn't even think of this one!

And I am sure "relax" is a word that won't enter my vocabulary until well after the new year!

Well, definitely try and relax. I know it's hard because there's always so much to do! But TRY!

We had to recently replace the rain gauge we've had for the past few years. Here's a link to the one we're currently using:

With the holidays fast approaching, you may also want to be thinking of any special decor for your windows, doors etc.
