I love VB, but I have a problem with what I think I see regarding some of the first floor units in the outbuildings. Some of them have a large balcony but no rail and it's not like it's a patio flush to the ground. Am I seeing this correctly? I would be afraid if I had children, or elderly on a balcony like that. Some have a railing, but the architecture seems to preclude railings around all of the balcony.
Can anyone comment, please?

Hey bobbi, I am assuming you're speaking of BCs. I have never really looked at the ground floor deck on the beach side. Tried reviewing some old photos, but none are above the dunes enough to see the deck area. I would assume they are protected somehow... can't imagine DVC taking any chances. Boy in 7 days we'll be on the road (and rail) :cool1: Mary Beth wants to do packing this weekend. :)

No, I'm not referring to a BC...but if you have your back to the ocean, to the left of the inn, maybe the 2nd or 3rd building to the left....I was wondering if I really was seeing these balconies...patios, but a few feet off the ground without railing. Like you, I'll be there very very soon, to look again, but I won't have one of these units, we do have a BC...and 3 inn rooms, and so I would like to know if what I'm seeing is the way it really is.

I hope you have a great time in the wildlife preserve. Until I saw your picture, of the Florida Panther, I "forgot" that panthers are dark, black, I always imagined Simba when I thought of a Florida Panther!

wish I remembered. the back next to the ocean definitely has railing - it is also higher.

but the front - think it is more like a porch - so just don't remember sorry.

now that is the BC again.

you aren't talking about them - would ask for a second or third floor in the villa part. you can see more ocean (if you get luck with an ocean view) and they do have elevators.

the only guaranteed ocean view - besides BC is the inn.

Yeah, I have stayed in one of those first floor units. There is no railing, but it wasn't that high off the ground. My sis and I stayed there with our 4 little girls and never had an issue - and we went out thru the patio sometimes to go to the pool. I would say it is no more than a foot off the ground, but maybe I'm remembering wrong. FWIW, there seems to be a lot of foliage they have planted since then that I think encloses the patio better.

Oh and the BC do have railings on the first floor ;)

Lexxiefern,

Thanks for the reassurance that we'll have railings for the BC! We have a DGS whom I'm sure would be at the ocean in a heartbeat if there wasn't some sort of barrier and there will be many eyes on him! (It's going to be a few years before his DMom and I are willing to risk an AKV stay, those animals are so enticing!)

So I was seeing what I thought I was...I'm glad you felt safe enough with your family in your first floor villa. With luck my family will be able to enjoy BC's for our DVC stays, and I'll just deal with whatever we get for some 2 bedrooms stays in the future. Thank you.

Think I found a pic that matches your memory. This pic is from 2005 just after one of the hurricanes. Notice the seagrape bush in the corner cut nearly to the ground and the other one the leaves are all brown.

Hi Rob...I hope you're having a wonderful Father's Day! I had a first floor studio that didn't have a railing, and I think that there are other buildings in which the drop is even more than the one you have pictured. When I first saw those villas, I thought to myself, What was DVC thinking! I imagine if there was a problem it would be fixed.

It's amazing how the vegetation has come back!!! OHHHH I can hardly wait...this time next week, so many Dis'ers will be in Vero Beach!!!!

Gregwoz will be in a group who will be at AKV with me next weekend. He called this morning to wish his DD happy fathers day and asked me if I knew what I was ordering for breakfast next Sunday morning. No question, I'm enjoying stuffed French Toast at Boatwrights Dining Hall, and then we all are heading out to VB!

Thank you.

Hi,
We were there in April, first floor unit, one bedroom right next to the pool. We have two very independent and boistrous 3 and 6 year olds. I was concerned as soon as I noticed no railing. The drop wasn't the issue, more the ability to leave. The good part is they couldn't be bothered going out there too much and you need to keep the door shut to use the ac, (which I need to use:) ) A service person was measuring the are for railings while we were there, you may find that if you call now, they might be up. But, like I said, the height was maybe 6 inches. Also, my son, Tigger and Superman rolled up in one decided he would just open the front door latch with his long handled shovel and skip the porch...:rotfl2: Have fun with whatever you do!!!!!!

We just stayed on the bottom floor in room 1520, got home yesterday. It was a 2BDR Villa, just wonderful, not ocean facing. It had railings on both of the balconeys because it was off the ground a bit. The villa next to us, more to the front did not have railings. Loved the resort!!! :yay:

Thank you, remember to bring bug spray for the no-seeums. We didn't have a problem with them, but apparently they can be very bothersome.
Have a great Anniversary!!
