Six months. Many wisely suggest researching for a year, but I felt that six months was enough.

Home resort was based on "where we wouldn't mind staying every time". Which for us was a very inexpensive resale contract, that we have been very successful into trading into other resorts at seven months.

If I was set on a specific resort that I wanted to stay most of the time, I would buy there no matter the cost difference. Because 2.5-4 decades is an awfully long time to chance staying somewhere you don't really want to stay.

Simply stated, if you don't know which resort you prefer, you need to rent points and try a couple out, or functionally do the same thing by getting a favorably priced SSR contract and trying the timeshare system out through that.

Do not spend $155-165 a point to purchase something if you don't know for sure you want that consistently, because there are plenty of resales available for less than half that per-point cost.

thanks for the insight. My DH was ready to sign the contract on the spot at Disney and I convinced him we needed to do more research and think a little longer about it. It was only then I discovered resales, etc. We are thinking seriously but are not ready to jump in yet...although it would make a lot of sense for our family. With 1 more child to get thru college I worry about the finances of it so we will continue to think some more!

good luck to you! We are in a similar boat, just sent our VWL contract to ROFR yesterday. I've wanted to buy for about three years now, but took me this long (and our last trip to WDW on rented points at BCV) to show my husband why we should do it.

We didn't go for a contract with as many points as I wanted; we had about a month of conversations on just that particular point. In the end, we know we can add on later, but we can't break up if we buy more than we are ready for right now. So, into the thirty day wait we go!
