I'm obese. BMI of 39. I'm in a good mindset with trying to lose the weight in baby steps. I've been reading about the Princess Half Marathon. Is it too late for me to start training? Basically I'm a couch potato. But I find this so inspiring. I obviously want to walk it only. Can I finish in the time allowed?

My suggestion is to follow baby steps. Have you looked at any of the Dr. Oz information?

Have you talked with your personal doctor and asked for suggestions? That might be a first step to take. Good luck.

Have you heard of the Couch to 5K program (C25K)? It is designed to get any couch potato up to completing a 5K at their own pace. I would suggest starting that program and basing your ability to do the princess on your progress there. Once you have competed the C25K program there are a lot of half marathon training programs out there that would bridge the gap up to 13.1 miles.

I can't say for certain that you can or can't be ready but once you start the training program you'll have a better idea of how quickly you could be ready. Just take it easy because the princess will still be here (well, I am assuming it will based on its popularity) in 2012 but if you do too much too quick trying to get ready to do it in 2011 you could end up with an injury that lingers around for a while.

Congratulations on your decision to take charge of your health/life! The Disney races inspired me (and countless others) to get up off the couch, and I'm glad you're feeling inspired as well.

Go for a walk ASAP, while you're feeling motivated. Don't worry about your distance or your pace for now. Just get out there and see how you do. There are loads of training plans out there (Google is your friend), and the Princess Half is over 15 weeks away, so if you feel strong after your first few walks, find a training plan and go for it!

If you'd like to buy yourself a little more time to train for the 16-minute-mile pace, you may want to consider the Disneyland Half over Labor Day weekend or the Wine and Dine Half (Oct. 1) instead. The only risk is, that's a long time to stay motivated. I would aim for the Princess myself, assuming you have the blessing of your physician.

Yes you can. Believe in yourself. Get up from the couch and walk a bit today, tomorrow go a little bit further, then further the next day. If you start today then even if for some reason you are not able to finish in the alotted time you have tried and made improvements in yourself and yourself.

I am not obese I have have been very overweight in the past and I have walked 20 half marathons and 5 marathons, losing weight and improving health at the same time.

Good luck and hope to see you in February.

Congratulations! I love that you are going to take steps to a healthier you. This is how the WISH Team got started actually. Someone posed the question. Wonder if we could do the half marathon at Disney. We all figured we would star training and share our highs and lows.

We had about a year to get ready and for me it was tough. You may be at a faster ability than I was so that will determine whether you can make the Princess. Get started and see where you go from here.

Like already mentioned, start walking now. Then, I like the idea of couch to 5k C25K for a start point. Just keep in mind you may have to repeat some weeks.

Let us know how you are coming along. We have a monthly type thread you can chat on to share your journey too.

If you want to get into fitness walking I would recommend starting with Hal Higdon's 5K walking program. Once you get to walking 5K you can better decide where to go from there. It could be C25k, it could be Galloway.

You don't have a lot of time if you're truely starting from scratch. I also started at a bmi of 39+ and I took 10 months to get ready for my first half marathon. Although I probably didn't need that long. If you're already going to be at WDW, I would look into the Royal Family 5K this year, then the half marathon next year (or the Disneyland in early September, W&D late September).

Also good luck and keep at it.

I just started running recently and am doing my first 5k after Thanksgiving. I am mentally planning on the half marathon for 2012. I would love to think I can do it for 2011 but not too sure!

EIther way ... good for you! Set your mind to it and go for it!

You can join in the losing weight and training for the 2012 Disney Princess 1/2 Marathon! I'm in the same situation as you! I just posted a thread on it. I'd love for you to join me!

I am doing it too! I need to lose quite alot, and am using the 2012 Princess Half as my inspiration!

Check out my blog about training for it. I packed it with health and fitness tips, tricks and reviews!

I will be 30 this year...its time to change things. Since I love Disney, this is prefect for me!
