Final weeks of training

This question is for the experienced racers/runners. I have been following the Furman "Run Less,, Run Faster program that includes three days of running and three days of cross training each week with one rest day. Do I continue with all the cross training during taper? With just thirteen days until the marathon relay, I am worn out from Christmas and the hard training in prior weeks. It would be great to just do the small amount of running. Any advice would be appreciated.

Happy running!

I would see if the program addresses it specifically - I would guess you still cross-train, but maybe cut back on the duration of the non-running workouts as well. I'm following a Higdon plan with 5 days of running per week, and even during the taper I've still been doing 5 days, just shorter (until the last week, which I think ends up being 4 days - 2 training runs and the two races).

I think if you dug into the FIRST plan you would find a reduction in xtraining volume as well as no weight training (if you are doing that) in the last week. While taper is a reduction in volume, it is not necessarily a reduction in intensity.

I follow FIRST as well. I still do XT--usually 30 minutes or so of something (Cycling, swimming), sometimes with weights thrown in. The way I approach it: Enough to get my heart rate up a little, but not enough to wipe me out. Yoga counts too.

Honestly, if you just wanted to do the running and blow off the XT, that would be fine. Listen to your body--if you need rest, take it.

Thanks for the advice. I am continuing with the cross training, but am keeping a low level of activity otherwise. Normally, I would be playing golf several times a week (walking the course) as well as tennis occasionally. For now, I am doing the minimum in hopes that I will feel rested next Sunday! Can't wait to get to Florida and fingers crossed that the temperasture high is no more than 60 degrees. I really would like to get a PR during my relay race.

Happy Taper!
Pam
