Filling the CB with Debates- Yes or No

[
Is what you posted within the posting guidelines? If so then most of what was on the old DB didn't violate them.

HERE HERE!!!!!!!!!!!!

This may come as a surprise to some, but I say no. Each has their own style and substance and I think mixing the CB and the DB is like mixing gasoline and a blowtorch. Ultimately, there's going to be an explosion.

I enjoy a hearty, robust debate as much as the next person and I enjoy "mixing it up". But, I really don't feel this is an appropriate forum.

That's my nickel's worth.

Well said...I am really starting to miss the CB board...it took me over 15 minutes to find a thread I was looking for...that was posted just 2 hours before!!! PLEASE GIVE THEM BACK THEIR DB!!

Although I hate to see the DB go, I realize that it's Pete's board and he can do whatever he wants with it.. The issue I DO have a problem with is the CB'er's who are implying that they are "above" ever engaging in a "debate" and acting as though anyone who "has" is going to "invade" the CB and turn it into a horrible free-for-all.. NEWS FLASH - They need look no further than the end of their noses to find folks who engage in heated "debates" right here on the CB (and have been doing so for a long, long time) so please, enough of the "Woe is me - there goes the neighborhood" routine..

Hits nail on head. ::yes:: Well said C.Ann

this is our board too now :) I just hope we can all get along :)

Huh?

There were 2 or 3 threads directly related to the closing of the DB. There were several that DSNY FN started that were "debates".

I'm at a loss as to how this impacted the regular thread traffic enough for you to need over 15 minutes to find what you were looking for.

I really am missing the debate board. :( I Don't know if Pete would go for it or not, but is there anyone willing to pay any amount of money to get the board back? Maybe we could all pay 20-30 dollars for a password that would get us into a debate board? Pete could use the money as he saw fit, we'd get a password, like the employees of Disney get, and those who didn't want to see the board, wouldn't have access to this board. Is ANYONE willing?

Me too. I really looked foward to my visits there each day (sometimes too much time was spent there). And even though I disagreed with some I still felt like most everyone there was my cyber-friend. We had a good mix of left/right wing nuts and everything inbetween.

I've looked at the "world events" board over at laughingplace but I just can't get my hands wrapped around it. I've joined (with the same name) but the "feel" is entirely different. I can't explain it but it just is.

I've checked it out too and am not liking it too much either. I mostly lurk, but I'm willing to pay for lurkdom! I miss the board. :(

Out of respect for the people who run this board, I do not think that it should be filled with debates. These boards are great and provided for free, and we should all abide by the rules that they set. The debate board was definately sometimes entertaining, but I think way too many people walked away with ill feelings, which I believe was not for what these boards were intended.

Maybe you're right, that's why I suggest paying for the site. If we pay to have the site (and I would vote unmoderated, but that would be up for debate too) then no one could claim they stumbled on to it. It surely wouldn't cost much to maintain, and Pete could use that money for the betterment of the site in general. I think we all use the other boards as well. Maybe I am way off here, but I miss it enough to pay for it and it would be a once in a lifetime investment.

Oh I agree that the CB shouldn't be filled with debates. Actually, that would probably be impossible since the CB has nearly 10 times the activty of the DB.

For me, it's hard to say if I thought that too many left beaten and battered because I rarely saw what I thought was overly harsh treatment. I think the ones who felt that way were just used to getting PD and hugs from the CB.

If you guys feel that way why don't you wander over to www.ezboard.com.. start your own board for free or if you hate ads very cheaply!!
You could make it moderated, unmoderated or anything in between

I do feel that way, but I feel pretty hurt that you would suggest we leave The Dis. I do feel I have pretty thick skin when it comes to debating, but when asked to leave, I guess I don't have the skin I thought I had. Perhaps this isn't the board I thought it was?

I agree it would be almost imposible to follow any debate on the CB. I've posted very rarely over here, as I just can't get into the "I ate breakfast this morning" or "I'm not wearing any pants" threads.

I love N Bailey's suggestion. I think it quite interesting that those of us that pushed and shoved each other around over there seem to coming together unified over this DB issue. What does that say about how mean we really are? We are a community that, in the end, respects and loves each other, I feel. We are also a community of devoted Disney fans and customers. How much more PD and Disney can you get? I'd still be curious the eventual financial fallout, either directly or indirectly over the shutting down of the DB.

Alex, with all due respect, I'm confused as to why you would encourage a section of some of your most devoted members to go elsewhere for their needs. Like I said, I gotta believe some of your advertising sponsors might feel some impact from this. Maybe I'm dreamin'. I dunno. Hey, there's a thought. Maybe those of us DB faithful might want to put pressure in the Disboard advertisers? Not sure they would really care, though.

Okay - now I'm totally confused..

First you announced that the Debate Board was being closed, but it was okay for people to debate here as long as they followed the DIS guidelines..

Now you're suggesting that the people who posted frequently LEAVE this DIS and go elsewhere? What EXACTLY is it that you want?

I have over 6000 posts.. I have posted on the Debate Board, the Community Board, the Transportation Board, the Budget Board, the Theme Parks and Attractions Board, the Disney For Families Board, the Disney News and Rumors Board, the Orlando and Area Attractions Board, the Crafts Recipes and Gardening Boards, the Disney Resorts Board, the Disney Restaurants board, the Sea World/Universal Boards, the Camping Board, the Disney For Solos and Adults board...

Just where the heck is it that you want me to go??? Because I frequented the Debate Board I have become one of the "evil" ones and should therefore go "somewhere else" and start my "own board"??

I think I'm missing the "pixie dust" in your above suggestion and quite frankly, I think it's rude and inappropriate of you to suggest that people leave after YOU told them that debates (and I'm assuming "debaters") were WELCOME to frequent the CB...

Whoa, whoa people! Are there really people here who don't know that Alex is a minimalist with words sometimes - you are all reading more in to his suggestion than there is :)

Allow a girl who is considerably less minimalist to re-phrase ;)

No one is asking anyone to leave these boards. Period. Make no mistake, when we want someone to leave, we take measures that leaves the poster in no doubt (and with no choice!).

The DB is alas gone. I know a lot of people are genuinely upset by this and trust me, we all do understand that :( But the decision has been made and that board will not be returning.

A suggestion was made to re-open it as a paid for/private membership board. As money was never the issue and as having it as a private board no more fits in with the direction we wish the site to take than an open board this will not be offered. However - what Alex was saying is that if you are willing to pay for something and as we won't ever be offering what you are looking for, you might consider, as an option, looking at EZboards who can offer what you want.

Once again, you are free to debate here or on any board you feel is appropriate to the topic, as long as it stays within the guidelines you are very welcome. However, for people who might now feel that the guidelines are too constraining there are other options - but unfortunately those options aren't available on this site. That isn't an invitation for anyone to leave...just pointing out that this site cannot be all things to all people. I'm sorry.

Alex is such a poor communicator that he needs someone else to interpret the REAL message of his post? Right.

That is pure and simple an invitation to leave. I think I'll take him up on it.

As another poster stated, I'm glad I decided to wait before becoming a sponsor of this site. Thanks, Alex, for making my decision clear for me.

See ya!

Well, I'm sorry you chose to see things that way Inaminute but it sounds like you've made up your mind and that is that.

It would be insincere of me to say I'll miss you as I've never even met you before but after 2 years on the site and 500+ posts I'm sure someone, somewhere will and I think that in itself is sad.

All the best

OH heck I should have seen this one coming. Someone please explain how suggesting you start your own board to handle "debates" is in anyway the same as asking you to leave here. It doesn't mean you aren't welcome for the community or disney trip planning but who can deny you could have much freer debates on a board set up for that purpose?

So you'd like a "members-only" part of the DIS for debaters, with a paid membership, but unmoderated?

I'm pretty sure the ezboards suggestion was made in all sincerity. That's a place where you can easily and inexpensively set up a new board and make your own rules ... lots of your friends here have done it. You could make a site that fits all of your criteria, other than that Pete own and administer it.

Do you currently participate on any unmoderated sites? If you really want to experience "unmoderated" (or very minimally moderated), visit some usenet groups. Here's one example for you: rec.org.mensa. They tend to discuss the same sort of political and societal issues that many of the debaters here seem to enjoy...

For the true "unmoderated" proponents, usenet sites might already fit your wish lists.

No one here has been told to leave. The webmasters have made clear that debates, discussions, and civilized exchanges of ideas are very welcome right here on the Community Board, as well as any other DIS forum where the topic is appropriate to the forum.
