Filling the CB with Debates- Yes or No

Alex,
Do you mean we are going back to what we had when Dan was still a moderator. Kind of like when the board was very "Christian"? I'm not trying to ber critical, I just want to understand,

thanks!:sunny:
Hey, Minnie, how did I get into this, LOL? :earseek: I never held church services, no conversions, no baptisms. :teeth: I will, however, admit to helping to try and keep the board nice, according to the stated guideline, which is still the same today as it was the day the CB started,---'Join our moderators in a discussion forum for any topic, Disney or otherwise. Swap stories, information, ask questions...just be friendly :)' That, along with adherence to the general DIS guidelines on profanity, obscenity, and so on. No more, no less.

I was, and still am, very conscious of the younger folk that come here and support Pete's long time profession for keeping the site at a level of decorum that a parent would feel comfortable with having their kids visit the site. Does that preclude adults from talking as an adult? No. But it does warrant that they carry themselves as an adult with kids around. Is it a kid board? Far from it. But it is kid friendly. And I have always done what I have been able to do, when I first came to the DIS, as a moderator (and please, the 'when I was a moderator posse', please, I did not bring it up  ) and the several years since then. I use that Report this post to a moderator whenever I think it warranted. Apparently sometimes they agree, sometimes they don't, they decide. I'm comfortable with that.

But again, Minnie, no conversions or Bible thumping here, actually never read it. :)

It's ok Dan.. I recognize you didn't say "when I was a moderator" first :)

Alex who said a good heated debate was about insults and mud slinging I mean if it gets heated it will step over the line I am sure of it but it won't have to be mud slinging or name calling that would put it over the line honestly according to the posting guidelines. It could be something someone takes in a totally wrong manner or feels different about then it gets reported and locked like the same sex marriages it would get locked because some peopel do not want to read it or feel opposed to it and it would get reported on that alone I am sure.

Dan,
I agree that no bad words or profanity should be used on here. I guess thats why the filters were implemented at one time. I do think that it is possible to debate current events, and to discuss adult topics in a mature, socially acceptable manner. I am merely saying that some of us with an education, and who follow current events enjoy discussing them in a socially acceptable manner.

I also like talking about different forms of religion. I don't see a lot of discussions about that on the CB. I am respectful of young people and fourteen year olds. I do, however usually enjoy conversing with adults, on an adult level.

yep I agree

I have been on the boards for all of a month or so. The closing of the DB board is precisely the reason I don't shell out $$$ to support something like this until I know it better.

Hear! Hear! If I had sponsored based on my appreciation for the DB, would I get my sponsorship back after it being shut down?

I vote no too. The debate board was closed down for a reason. We don't need this board closed down as well.

Yes, but on the CB you must agree with everyone, or apologize for having an original opinion. Thats the way it has always been! Can't wait to see how this will go!:sunny:

On top of that, I have to wade through so many "My cat just learned how to drive" post to get to the ones with any substance.

BTW, I agree with your previous post minniepumpernickel

How about if 'debate' is posted in the subject line? You know, the way we already put 'vent' or 'rant' so people know what they are getting into? Works for me! :D

That's a great idea, would people do that?

I wish they would bring back the DB, too. Seems like the DB folks need a place to play....;)

Look at most of the DB posts most of them have Debate inthe header allready

yes they do.. BUT I don't see it as a good thing because I don't see "fluff suibject" in the other threads... If I click on it and I don't want to read it I click out. I will too prob put debate ... but if there continues to be a lot of mean spirited posts and "they shouldn't be here" I dunno if I would. I want to be nice and I want to be respectfull but it does go both ways and "they" need to be respectfull too and understand we aren't going anywhere.

I used to be just like a lot of people on the CB. I used to want to get rid of the people that didn't agree with me. Then when these "different" people ended up getting banned, it became so boring on here. Now I've learned my lesson, and I believe in diversity a lot more than I used to. You'll see, it'll get really boring on here if a lot of people leave again.:(

Oh I agree ginna but for the sake of the Debate threads this way peole know ahead of time and can't complain and report it to the mods etc. Mindyou some of my threads do not have it in the header.

as long as you follow the rules it is ok. but I do agree that if you make it nice maybe they will be nice too. It was the judggemental people and the "this is my board" that would bring the atmosphere down.

that was really nice of you to say. :) just because someone is "different" doesn't make them bad. I actually feel better now and think once this "mourning period" is over we will all be just fine :)

Here here ITA a little controversy will keep things alive in this place.

Well sorry pjlla you may end up avoiding the CB to then because we have been told we can debate here so I am sure we will and are hope you stick around but if not I am sure we will all understand your choice not to.

Well that just proves that what you are looking for is not a real "debate". Debates use facts not insults, inuendo and mud slinging

This is, frankly, the kind of thing that makes it unclear what is and is not acceptable. With all due respect, you seem awfully quick to look down on those who enjoy a hearty debate (note that a hearty debate need not include any of the items you mention). Is what you posted within the posting guidelines? If so then most of what was on the old DB didn't violate them.

Filling the CB with Debates- Yes or No

This may come as a surprise to some, but I say no. Each has their own style and substance and I think mixing the CB and the DB is like mixing gasoline and a blowtorch. Ultimately, there's going to be an explosion.

I enjoy a hearty, robust debate as much as the next person and I enjoy "mixing it up". But, I really don't feel this is an appropriate forum.

That's my nickel's worth.
