Looking for info on people who have gambled and used the free drive thru at Walgreens/cvs or walk up covid test at city hall ect options.
I am aware of all the time constraints and rules around travelling back to Canada - just looking to get info on all the options, including saving 135-199 a person and if it’s worth a try with a back up plan.
Again looking for people’s experiences who tried and failed or succeeded , not a lecture on how 199 a person is worth it.

My wife and DD did the drive-through Rapid ID Now test at Walgreens earlier this month (in Nashville) for their return flight to Toronto. Easy to book, no wait at the location day of, simple to test, completely free, results by email in under an hour.

YMMV of course.

We used Walgreens last week before coming home and it was super easy! The hardest part honestly was trying to secure appointments. I was really nervous we wouldn't get one, and we ended up at a Walgreens about a 30 minute drive from Disney...fortunately we had a rental car and we just decided to enjoy the drive and the AC. The only frustrating part was we are a family of 4 and our appointments were 15 minutes apart, meaning they spanned over an hour. Walgreens was awesome though and when we got there let us all do our tests at the same time. We got our results in a few hours and I was able to easily upload the PDF to ArriveCan along with our vaccine results. It's essential if you want to be exempt from quarantine on return home that you know your 1st and 2nd dose dates and have proof to upload to ArriveCan. Honestly if you have everything electronically, ArriveCan is super user friendly.

We used Walgreens near WDW on Vineland-Apooka. You can make reservations 3 days in advance, and had no problem getting 2 appts. at 12:00 & 12:15. But they did us at same time. No line up, we got there at 11:45, a bit early and we’re finished before noon!
Got our results in 40min.

Have to fill out online form. I used my hotel address, and checked off travelEd within 2 weeks. They also want the name and dates of your vaccinations. We had a combo of Moderna and Pfizer but I just put down both were Moderna. They don’t ask to see anything. They did want photo ID when you drive up, and we showed our Canadian drivers license. No problem.

We did the test 48 hrs before flight. I figured if I didn’t get results as Promised, the next day I could always go to the $$$ lab.
I did the NAAT? NAAP? Can’t remember correct term. At Walgreens it’s the Rapid ID test. We returned home Aug 14.

Thanks!
I’m looking for specifically Anaheim area- sorry I should’ve posted that!
When I try to book the closest NAAT PCR is Nevada right now.
dows anyone know if the drive thru at CVS are NAATPCR - I’m more concerned about the turn around time for results on the regular PCR

Did you have a rental car or did yo take a cab?

At what time of day did you make the appointment?

I did a test run today to see what it will be like and no appointments for the next few days were available that I could see.

i have a friend in Orlando who drove us. My second choice would be to get a Mears cab.

I made our appts 3 days ahead at midnight. I’ve since heard from another post here they refresh at 10:00pm so I didn’t have to stay up till midnight lol.

Hey OP, we just got back from Disneyland so I hope you can use the following:

Flying back on Monday at 10:45pm, we looked to book tests for Saturday but when checking the Walgreens site on Thursday night things were already getting a little slim as you have to book a separate test for each person you are traveling with and there are 4 of us.

I booked two appointments at the W Orangethorpe Walgreens for my wife and myself. I was at 11:30 am and hers at 1:00 pm. For the two kids, I booked the E Chapman location at 2:15 and 2:30 pm. These were the closest locations that had appointments available and the available times were disappearing even as I was booking them.

On the day of we pulled up to the W Orangethorpe window and got my test done. They had no problem doing my wife's test as well at the same time. The same with my kids, though their appointments were back to back. Tests were easy peasy, swirl up each nostril and put the q-tip back in the bottle they give you. Both stores promised results in 24-36 hours. Plenty of time.

What we did not know what that different stores used different labs. One was in FL, the other was in TN!

We got the results for my wife and myself by midday on Sunday. Our flight, as mentioned, was at 10:45pm on Monday so there was still plenty of time. Well, Monday came and went and we're at the airport and still no results for the kids. The LAX testing had just shut down at that point as well (open 7am - 7pm). There was a clinic nearby but no guarantee that we could get the results in time and still make the flight.

We spent about an hour trying to figure out what to do. It was $150/ticket to cancel and rebook with Air Canada. At one point, I was going to fly back and my wife would stay hoping that the kids' results came in for the morning. I should note here that the timing of the 72 hour window starts with the time you booked your test, not when you took it. So my window closed at 11:30 am on Tuesday, but my wife had until 1:00 pm, even though she took her test at the same time.

The first flights the next day were at 9:30 am and 11:35 am, so I'd only be able to make the 9:30 am flight. The AC agents were genuinely concerned for us and did everything they could to help us but there wasn't much they could actually do since we needed the clean test results to board the plane. Finally, like I said, after about an hour we decided we would take the 9:30am flight and take the kids to the 24-hour clinic overnight. At one point we were talking about leaving the kids (16DS and 18DD) at the airport to wait for their tests. An AC agent said, "I wouldn't leave my kids here overnight." We thought she was just calling us bad parents (believe me, no one was pointing that finger more intently than myself), but as we soon discovered the number of homeless people who live at LAX is pretty astounding.

AC recommended taking a shuttle to the Renaissance hotel as the 24-hour clinic is in the next building. We did that and got the tests done in about 3 hours at $150/test. It's a walk-in clinic, so there were other people ahead of us for other medical services. The Covid tests took about 30 mins to get results. What we didn't know was how to get back as we couldn't just ask the hotel to call the shuttle to bring us back to the airport! Me and the kids ended up WALKING back to the airport. Not a long walk, certainly not after Disney, but there are plenty of homeless and sketchy people out in the middle of the night. At least you can walk into LAX. I have no idea how you would get back to Toronto airport on foot.

I must say that Air Canada went above and beyond as they waived our rebooking fee for moving the tickets. The agents were very nice and sympathetic to our issue. I think us being nice and the fact that we weren't demanding the kids be let on or shouting (there were some tears, though) helped our cause. And the fact that we DID try to get the kids tested, just that the lab hadn't sent back the results yet probably helped as well.

At the end of a very long day, the kids tests came back clean. We got on the 9:30 am flight back home to Toronto. Landed at 4:50 pm, found out our ride home wasn't able to make it due to medical reasons, so I had to take the the bus home and come back with the car. All told, we were finally able to grab a pizza and be home by 9:30 pm on Tuesday.

tl;dr: My advice is to book everything as far out as possible. The only store I can vouch for is W Orangethorpe, but they were great. Stay away from E Chapman. Be prepared to get a second $$$ test. Fly Air Canada.

I remember reading somewhere that for some reason kids don't get their results emailed. I'm not sure how you're supposed to get them, but I do remember reading that.

I guess in all the work of writing my novella, I forgot the punchline. We did get their results at 7am on Tuesday - Walgreens only missed their 24-36 hour results window by 28 hours. So, not only did the extended time spent waiting for the results mean that I spent an extra $300 USD on new tests, but it also rendered them unnecessary since they came in before the rescheduled flight time.

Hello, This is our experience.. We visited Disneyland and Universal (and some touristy stuff in LA). Our flight was 11:30am on Tuesday. We did testing at Walgreens in Beverly Hills on Saturday at 4:00 (hoping to mitigate any flight delay issues), and thought it would be quick turn-around. Unfortunately, we tested using the PCR test that takes 2-3 days for return. 3 days would have euchred us, so we spent the better part of our next morning looking for quicker options in case we didn't hear back. Turns out everything was closed on Sunday. We decided to forget about it, call in the morning (Monday), and enjoy the rest of our day. THANKFULLY, results came Sunday around 10:15pm.

It worked for us, but I want to point out it did say 2-3 days return. We received ours in about 30 hours (and on a Sunday at that... turns out the Labcorp company that processes the tests operates on the weekend -- who knew!)
