For dinner we are having the taco bake and milk. There is a lot of that recipe so I should be okay. :thumbsup2 I am going to start a new thread with healthy filling snack ideas because I am running out![/QUOTE]

Have you tried Smoothies they are quiet filling with yogurt and milk and fruit and ice. Just need a blender. Smoothies are great mid morning snacks and in the evening we do one for the kids sometimes with frozen yogurt.
I have learned with my oldest boy he's a bottomless eater. I just leave fruit and veggies on the table all day he can snack on them. Then unless it's lunch he can have only water to drink (he doesn't like milk won't drink it) This has seem to cut back on me preparing 6 meals a day for him. Also has helped with him stay in his weight limit he is a very big boy 5'4 130lbs and he's only 10. Built very stocky.
Almonds and walnuts and sunflower seeds are great to leave on the table to.

dawn--I make those too except we boil our pretzel shapes before we bake them. Just drop them into boiling water (with salt in it) until they rise to the top, flip them over for a few seconds or so and then fish them out. It makes them a little more "pretzel-y"

Thanks I'll try that next time i do that with the bagels. I use the same dough for homemade bagels.

Baking soda makes them golden and chewy. I think lye does the same thing...according to Alton Borwn! I wouldn't suggest it, though!

I know I wouldn't try the lye idea either.

When he was 7 we wore the same shoe size he's not got bigger feet then his 6'5 dad. lol

I would think boiling would make them more bagel-y.

I think this thread is great for people who want to work on stretching a $ and hopefully feeding their family a healthy menu at the same time. I do believe it can be done. Having said that... I don't think I could do it! :rotfl: But I think those of you who have deserve a high-five!!! As far as the post above... you're telling me that for breakfast, your 11 year old son "puts away"
2 bagels with cream cheese
1 bowl of cereal with milk
2 scrambled eggs
and Juice........
and you're talking to mommiepoppins about eating healthy??? That would be breakfast and lunch for my 12 year old son.
And my husband could probably eat a whole shepards pie too... but he wouldn't - it would be extremely unhealthy to have such eating habits. And he's also hardworking  Although I'm not sure what this has to do with being able to eat so much??? "my dh can eat more than your dh"

Okay, but what are you going to do when they (the kids) are genuinely this hungry? I am asking this seriously. Maintaining a budget and also keeping DS fed are two things I am not managing to pull together lately and he eats that way too. (He wouldn't eat the scrambled eggs though--the one food he does not like!) On the other hand, I have not commented on anyone's healthy eating or lack thereof.

We are making up such nice words here today!! :rotfl: Anyway, baked pretzles to my mind are kind of bagel-y. I like the baking soda idea--I'll have to try that. I too will be staying away from the lye. That Alton Browne is a little too odd in his recipes for me. Like I have two full days to devote to making pizza crust. I was cracking up on The Next Food Network star when Alton told them they had to make their food more accessible to viewers. HELLO???

In all seriousness try fresh fruit and veggies with all meals make them raw like if your gonna have your cereal eat a whole banana or a 1/2 cup of raw sliced strawberries with it. Or if your gonna have bagels try eating an orange or a grapefruit with it or even 4oz of grapefruit juice (don't get the sweeten that will cause hunger when the sugar added works off) What i did with my kid was this, with his Doctor's direction.. Let me state that first
Ok have your bagel now eat this plate of fruit drink a glass of water 8oz and if your still hungry come back for more. With in a week he went mom i'm not as hungry as i use to be.
Now for lunch he eats sandwiches or hot dogs or what ever but always has a plate (salad plate size) of fruit and veggies and at lunch he's allowed 1 glass of crystal light. And if still hungry must have 8oz of water first. Before he asks for a sandwich he eats veggies and fruit. Now if he's out all day playing football or baseball or riding his bike and asks at 4 for a sandwich he will probably get it because he's hungry but gets half on whole grain with 1tbs of peanut butter. Also Our doctor told us try water first sometimes people mistake especially kids hunger for thirst.

True. Fiber tends to fill you up. I would try an apple with water before giving apple juice.

I was looking at the fruit fly thread because I always have fruit out. If I keep it in the fridge, they are too lazy to open the door and get some (also some fruits taste better if they haven't been refrigerated).

WOW I have to say Anyone who can eat a WHOLE pie and 3 apples in one sitting can not be healthy ! WOW I don't cood those but I did do a chicken pot pie and my family of 5 yes all younger kids 8 and under ate them and about 2 hours later we had night time snack and off to bed . That amount of food to me seems VERY unhealthy . There is such a thing as over eating and eating when our bodies are truley NOT hungrey . That has got to be the case . Or maybe he dose not eat lunch ?

WOW

My husband is 6'5", weights 210 and is pure muscle. He's handsome too, smart and gentle and nice. He works hard, physically hard every day. He wears a size 34 pants with a 35 inch inseam and has no rear end. He probably burns more calories climbing ladders carrying heavy equipment all day than most people eat in a few days. He rides bikes, runs marathons and often swims laps at night. My son plays basketball, soccer and runs almost daily. He rides his bike, swims laps and is pure muscle. He's 5'3, weighs 114 and is prounounced a fit and healthy specimen by his pediatrician. No extra fat on him, he works it off. The rest of his diet consists of fruit and vegetables, he's a vegetarian. He's smart too! :) Very active people can eat a lot and stay healthy. I am NOT that active and do not eat like they do. If I try-I'm sorry as my metabolism is not nearly as fast as theirs and I gain weight.

I would say that on occasion, my husband has skipped lunch. My son grazes through the day after breakfast and I can often identify no specific lunch for him either but he does eat. Our dinner meal is often late so it is high protein, high fiber veggies and mostly water.

Neither my son nor my husband drink a lot of soda or juice-empty calories. They mostly stick with protein, high fiber carbs and fruit. The example I stated of my husband being able to eat a whole Shepherd's pie in one sitting was exactly that. I would never feed him that much red meat. He wouldn't eat it. Baked potatoes are more his fare and meat is lean with veggies being more raw or al dente.

My point? Are these kids who eat so very little just sitting around, not moving? Active children need calories and healthy food. Mine son is more active than most but even a normally active child needs healthy, nutritive calories with fiber and C,D,E,A,B vitamins.

Yep, that's what I'm tellin you about my son. Does he eat it all in 15 minutes? No. He eats this kind of breakfast a couple of times a week and usually in a least an hour. Key word, "could" for the Shepherd's pie and I've already clarified that mine would NEVER eat that kind of red meat or that amount. Mommiepoppins is talking about feeding her family on less than $10 a day. Her husband's food expenses are not in there and two of her children are not at home. I guess that clears that up. And yes, if I thought someone was underfeeding their children, I'd bring it up to them. Kids need loads of nutrition to build their bodies, teeth, hair, keep their eyes seeing well and their bones strong. Take a look at the most recent food pyramid. It's pretty clear.

If my kids were that hungry, I would feed them. They have their days. Sometimes, they hardly eat and sometimes, they eat like there's no tomorrow. I always have fruit, cheese, veggies, eggs, milk, dried fruit, crackers in the house for just such reasons. Also, my servings are calculated for leftovers. Sometimes I get them and sometimes my family will eat tomorrow's dinner tonight.

Anyway, my budget is way over $10 per day. It is unusual when I hit that amount. However, just listing my menus helps me keep tighter control over my food spending.

my kids are always playing out side and swimming .. We take walks. In fact I am also a bad mom becuase I only let them watch tv from 7-9 at night.. During the day I do not want the tv on.. now dd 15 turns it on and I keep turing it off on her.. she is active in sports to

I think that some people have not read every post on this thread , so let me point out a few very important ones:

Please allow me to step in to make this Public Service Announcement.

This thread was started in an effort to get people to save money.

I would ask those of you who are here only to cast aspersions on the choices made by those who have taken this challenge, to please refrain from posting those negative thoughts.

Everyone remember does what they feel is the best for THEIR family. It may not be what you do for your family and that is perfectly fine. Different strokes for different folks.

Please remember these words from the DIS Posting Guidelines:

we ask that everyone be treated with respect

Thank you.

and

I have said this before, and I will say it again. This thread is set up for a CHALLENGE. People can choose to do it or not. And it is NOT RIGHT for anyone else to come on and make fun of those who are participating and how they choose to do so.

As I mentioned before, everyone makes choices for their families and NO ONE makes choices intending to purposely cause their families' harm.

If you are not interested in "playing" along with this and only want to put down those who are doing so, please ONLY read this thread.

If we continue to see comments like some of the ones that we are seeing, there WILL BE infractions handed out. One of the main rules that we have on the DISBoards is that people treat other posters WITH RESPECT when posting.

Thank you!

and

I will request that if you are NOT interested in participating in this challenge and only want to post to this thread to demean those who do participate, please take your "concerns" elsewhere.

The focus of this thread is on saving money and making one aware of what is spent each day on meals. Rightly, wrongly, or otherwise, nutrition is not always the main attraction. That is the focus for another board.

If you want to discuss and comment on Nutrition, please do so on boards where that is the focus.

Again, we will not tolerate people posting disrespectfully towards others. This is against the DIS Guidelines for Posting and infractions will be handed down if you choose to ignore this.

Thank you.

So, let's get back to the true SPIRIT of this thread.

I just wanted to pop in and say I think this thread is awesome! I've gotten some great ideas. I'm also really impressed at how well all of you have managed to stretch a dollar! :worship: It's very inspiring!
