The Georgia legislature has been working on a bill dealing with illegal immigration. One of the original components of the bill was that anyone who couldn't prove legal US residency had to pay a 5% fee on any wire transfer to another country.
The bill couldn't get through both the house and senate with that provision, so it's been revised. The current version does not include the wire transfer fee.
What do you guys think?
I, personally, think it's a great idea. It would make the illegals pay into a system that they are currently avoiding by not paying taxes. At least they'd be contributing a little bit to the economy that way.
I actually was shocked after opening a new Bank of America account a few weeks ago. I called to check the balance, and one of the automated prompts was "to wire money to Mexico, press ____"
Here is an older article which describes the bill.
