I ordered an ipad. I had to sign for it, for it to be delivered. Since I work and I knew I wouldn't be there I had them hold it at a fedex location for me to pick it up. Well I went to pick it up and it was a huge box that weighed 20 pounds. I knew that couldn't be my package, they insisted it was. I pointed out it had someone else's name on it. I left without a package, called fedex. They informed me that it was still on the van to be delivered to the fedex store. In the mean time I got a call from the store manager at that location. He told me that that fedex had accidentely switched the pickup tags so the person had picked up my box instead of there own. Fast forward 2 hours..they got ahold of the son of the man that picked my package up. He said he doesn't think his dad opened my box. He was going to try to get ahold of his dad to take my package back to fedex and get his own.
I'm not very happy right now. How could this person have confused my 3 pound little package with his big 20 pound package!!! He should have known that something was wrong when he picked the box up. Although fedex should have never have gotten it mixed up in the first place. I told them if it's open I would not accept the package. What would you do??? Should I still take it if it appears to not have been opened? That is if the guy really does ever bring it back to fedex!!

Why would you refuse the package if it was unopened? Would Apple give you a refund if you refuse it with out reason?
If it is open note that on the paper work. If there is something wrong file a claim with fed-ex.

I don't know!! I was just looking for opinions here. Is the ipad sealed in shrink wrap? I guess if that's unopened, i'll take it??? I don't know anything yet, because the man still has it, they were only able to make contact with the son so far.

The iPad box from apple is sealed so if that seal is broken and you are uncomfortable with it than file a claim with fedex.

The blame belongs with Fedex and not another customer who is also being inconvenienced by getting the wrong package. I know many times I have received huge, heavy packages that are so packed they weigh far more than one might expect.

I know also because I am available during the day people have sent orders to me so I can sign for them and they can get them and I have NO CLUE what size package to be expecting and would sign for anything with the proper name on it.

I would not be blaming the other customer - his 20 lb package may hold 5 ipads and would you appreciate him thinking you were planning on keeping them?

I'm blaming fedex. But on the other hand the customer picked my package up at fedex yesterday. Fedex has only been able to get ahold of the son so far. They did say if they don't get ahold of the man that picked up my package soon, they would be contacing security. Whatever that means..
I knew I was expecting a package that weighed 2.80 pounds, therefore I never took his package even though they insisted it was mine!!

Make a list of the dates/times/names of who you spoke to and what they said.

Odds are, the guy wants his 20-lb package, so he'll likely bring back your box.

If the guy brings it back and they call you to pick it up, use common sense.

. If the outer box is still sealed, accept the package.

. If the outer box was opened, but the factory-sealed inner box is sealed, accept the package.

. If it's been opened and/or used, you can refuse the package and advise the seller and your credit card company. Fedex is on the hook for the replacement since it was their error.

There's really no excuse for the guy to open the ipad box itself, esp. if he was expecting something completely different.

I'd give Fedex until 3pm today, then advise the seller that Fedex lost the package and ask about getting your purchase, intact. File a claim with Fedex corporate via their website, so they are aware of the problem.

Good luck.

I'm blaming fedex. But on the other hand

No, there's no other hand. So the guy hasn't gotten back to them. Maybe he, I dunno, has a life and doesn't have time to sit around waiting for fedex to call him. Several reasons have already been given about why he might not know what size package to pick up. It's all on Fedex.

I routinely receive at home or pick up packages for my (at home) work that are shipped from vendors and companies, and I have no clue what might be in them or how much they're supposed to weigh. So it's pretty likely that he wasn't expecting a package of any specific size. In any case, it's not this guy's fault. It's totally fedex.

I agree - right now my husband is working 6am-6pm everyday with an hour commute both before and after work so he literally gets up, goes to work; comes home, has one quick thing to eat and goes to bed. A package he was expecting might be sitting on a table for a week before he would have a chance to open it. And there is no contacting him now unless you catch that hour window he is home and up...no calls at work.

If it were me, I'd just call Apple (or whatever company you ordered it from - Best Buy or wherever) and let them deal with the FedEx issue. It's not your responsibility to have to hunt down your package and do all the work. Apple would probably just deal with Fedex to file a claim to get it back and they would just send you another iPad.

I agree contact both fed-ex and apple or who ever and start the claim.. if everything works out with orginal package you can cancel claim! its also possible that this man had a gift delivered and has no idea that its not for him! ( trust me that happens). however it works out good luck!!

BUT here another question for ya if his name was on the package does he legally have to return it?? he may be keeping it!!!! times are tough and ipad for free may be very tempting!!! Contact Apple ASAP!

:yay::confused:

I keep getting different stories, but I called fedex asking them if they could pick the package up since they made the mistake. They told me they couldn't because the guy who has it says he was in the hospital and no one was home. So, supposedly the guy said he would bring it back tomorrow.
I think my name and address must be on my package that they have. When I went to pick my package up the package fedex tried to give me had their info on it. Some how the pick up tickets got crossed and the fedex store and fedex ground each blame the other.
I have called apple. They also contacted the fedex store. When the package arrives back in the store I can either accept it or return to sender. Apple said when they get it back they will send a new one. If the package doesn't end up coming back tomorrow, they will contact fedex to put a claim in, then i'll get a new one.

Who knows..I just know they said if they didn't hear back from the guy they would get security involved. Whoever that is...

The guy can be charged with theft. It wasn't his fault they delivered the wrong package, but it is on him to notify Fed-Ex (or Apple) that the package does not belong to him. I used to work for Airborne and we had things like this happen more than you'd think (daily basis). Normally the wrong recipient would contact us, and we'd arrange a pick-up. There were a few occasions that the theft talk had to come up with someone when they didn't return our phone calls or "missed" the pick-up time that had been arranged.

that is really annoying. i think if your name is not on it you have to return it, its like if your neighbor's letter ends your mailbox you have a legal obligation to return it. however, if the man is in the hospital and stays there and the package is home i don't think they can put a time limit on when it is returned. fedex would most likely have to reimburse apple and then when they get it from him return it or just keep it as their property since they paid apple for it.

either way as long as you got the shipper (apple) involved they should be a big help in getting it resolved.

I would contact Apple again. This isn't YOUR problem. They need to quickly make this right.

Amazon would have already sent you a shipment, and they will work out the details behind the scenes with fedex; it's not your business, it shouldn't be your business. I think this is how other companies should do things...

That's frustrating. Did you get free shipping? If not, I would ask for that to be refunded.

In all fairness this really isn't apple's problem either. If they work with fedex for the customer it would be a great thing and awesome customer service but they really don't have to.

As for the other customer. Although he really can't keep the item legally he would have alot of leeway on getting the item back. He could claim any number of things, no way to get it to the store, no time, the fact that he is in the hospital etc. Its not his fault either.

For example I'm expecting a package any day now from work. I have a general idea of what size the box will be but weight can vary highly.
