I remember a disscusion quite awhile back that might give some newer members something to think about:
Many people seem to be making reservations, to secure a room, with the plan to switch them when a code comes out. Disney uses (discount) codes to fill unreserved rooms, usually during less than peak periods. The more people who reserve rooms, the less chance that a code will be offered.
Seeing how it's usually during less busy times of the year that they are offered, I don't see the need for making room reservations very far in advance. Unless you need a very specific room type, like a suite or concierge at a deluxe, with a little flexibility you can almost surely find something at your choice of resort.
My wife and I are planning a long weekend parents getaway for early in February and have made our air and rental car reeservations but are waiting for our room, hoping that a Passholder's Discount might be offered. If there is none, we'll probabally stay at POFQ or CBR, if there is one then maybe AKL or Y/BC. Either way, I'm confident that we'll find something. Being a little flexible is a price we're willing to pay for the greater likelyhood of a discount. Worst case, there's always hotelkingdomdotcom.
