February 26, 2005, Magic Western

My boys are both in Scouts and collect pins/badges for their campfire ponchos. If anyone has kids who do the same, let me know if you are interested in bringing along a few pins/badges from your state/province/country for the kids to exchange during the cruise.

Cheers!

SamB...My DS will turn 2 on Feb 6th and like your daughter, has started his terrible 2 stage a bit early! He likes to do (or at least try) everything his big sister (5 YO) does so I think we are going to have a hard time trying to keep him in the one ear of the Mickey pool while she is going down the Mickey slide and swimming in the Goofy pool! I'm also a bit apprehensive thinking about dinner each night. He's one of those kids that has to constantly be on the move! Hopefully we will get a great team of servers who will help us keep him entertained!

Can't wait to meet all of you!

If you have kids and haven't yet seen the thread below, then check it out.

Essentially, you can ask that people who have returned from their cruise send a surprise postcard to your kids before they leave on their cruise. You get to indicate the message your kids will receive and which character will sign. You can even try to ask for a specific kind of postcard (princess card for a little girl and so on). The Magic cruise is a surprise for my kids, so their standard Mickey Mouse card will read: This place is "magical". Really wish you could see it with your own eyes. Your friend, Mickey Mouse. Once the card arrives from my secret Mickey, I'll hide it and then plant it back into the mailbox the day before our departure and let the kids get the mail that day.

What a great idea! Just be sure to pay back the favor later on for someone else's child/children.

Cheers!

Verandah Man (another DISer) sent a postcard to my kids from Micky. It was really for the benefit of my 5 YO DD. She was just in awe..."How does Mickey know where I live?" "How does he know that I have a little brother named Jadon?" (I was pregnant with Jadon on our last cruise). When we received it, she had to take off for the neighbors house right away to show her friend Hannah.

Strangely enough, Verandah Man is my kids' secret Mickey too! Isn't that a coincidence.

"Kim, in the "it is a small world" type of comments, I was looking at your web page that you had posted on another thread on the DIS, and I realized that Tyler who became a friend of your son on your last cruise, was the tyler that we had dinner with on our cruise last year, 12 of us shared a table we had all met throught the DIS, and we also exchanged pictures, the picture that Tyler' s mom posted was the picture of your son and Tyler at Castaway Cay....... Now I feel like singing we are all a big family..."

Christine,
When Norman told me about your post here I was shocked! Of all things to know we hung around with Tyler and Gina on the beach and then you would sail with them to come full circle and bump into us?! Life is funny. God has a plan for us all and nothing that happens is by accident. I believe in fate and you'd better try and catch up with us! :) If you didn't mark our cabin down, please do.

RECEIVED DOCS TODAY!

UPS just dropped off our cruise docs! No upgrade but then, I wasn't really expecting one.

Just one FYI---we are flying in night before & taking a limo to port on Sat. Southern Elegance called me this morning & said that DCL called them to inform them that, for security reasons, they are not allowing passengers / vehicles into port until 10:30am that Saturday. We planned on arriving at port about 10:00 so it's not that big a deal but I just wanted to let all of you know so you could plan accordingly.

See you all soon!

I just received an email from cruise.com that a package has been sent to me -- could it be our documents. Boy am I excited. Hoping for an upgrade myself!!

I wonder why it would only be that Saturday that you could not get in until 10:30, I think that they always tell people that they do not open until 10:30 and then generally they do open at 10:00, but I could be wrong.
We changed our plans and now going to spend 2 nights at WDW and thendrive to the port on Saturday morning...
It should be fun.

We just got home and our tickets were waiting for us, we are all so excited :cheer2: :jumping1:
We will see you all very soon :boat: :thewave:

We got our docs today by UPS. We arrive in Orlando early afternoon on the 25, staying at the Hyatt. Now I have to figure out what mini-excursion is possible from there.

No upgrade (boohoo), so looks like Deck 6 will be home away from home after all...

If anyone can advise on possible things to do on the 25, please let me know.

Brenda

Brenda, will you have a car, you could rent a car for 1 day, go to downtown Disney when you get there, it is a fun place to walk around, and there are some restaurants, and then drive yourself to the port the next morning, and return the car there....
It is coming up really soon.

Christine, we looked at a few options, particularly the Kennedy Space Center, which the kids would love, but thought we would be overdoing it. Our flight leaves Montreal at 10, so we're not in Orlando until 2. Once we pick up the bags and check in at the Hyatt, it'll probably be 3 or later.

If the weather is nice (75+), we'll just let the kids go swimming. Being from the north, they'll be fine even if the water is a little cold. They swim all summer in our pool and the water is rarely above 85 degrees. Then we'll have dinner and a relaxing evening. The hotel looks nice, so I am sure we'll find something to fill a few hours.

We've decided to let the cat out of the bag on the Wednesday prior to departure. Verandah Man is sending a Mickey Mouse postcard to the boys, which we plan to hide and then put back into the mailbox on that day. It will give the kids a chance to enjoy the pre-trip excitement for a few days.

Look forward to meeting everyone...

Yippee!!! We picked up our docs today from AAA. I'm so excited. Three weeks from today I'll be loading suitcases in the car so we can rush to the airport. Yipee!!!!!

Kim

I've read the what-to-bring posts and they're stressing me out. :crazy2: Even after weeding out all the things I'm pretty sure I won't need, I'm still looking at 3+ suitcases for only 8 days. How can that be???? The four of us spent three weeks in Hawaii in April-May with only one suitcase (albeit a big one) for clothes and a second for footware/diving and beach stuff/school materials.

We're so laid back when we go on vacation...I can't deal with all this wear this, don't wear that, reserve this, reserve that. I've now gathered together 14 pairs of shoes/sandals that we "need" to bring...I'm starting to feel like Imelda Marcos.

Here's my classic vacation must-bring list: bathing suit, sunscreen, sarong, mask/snorkel, two or more good books I've been wanting to read, kids and hubby...not in any particular order.

How did I go from that to a two-page list that includes zip-lock bags, cocktail dresses and dollar-store shoe bags????

HELP...

Hi All! My name is Christy :earsgirl: I'm from Colorado :cold: and a first time cruiser! My DH :earsboy: and I are taking our 4 yr DS pirate: on this cruise and are all VERY excited to depart and start the fun! We are arriving in Orlando 2/23 and taking in Sea World on 2/24 before traveling to the Radisson Resort @ Port on 2/25. We too are thinking of visiting Kennedy Space Center on 2/25 - we've never been to FL and thought why not?!

I have a crazy packing question - do I need to bring towels? I've been to Club Med where you don't need to pack them, but I haven't seen anything in all the stuff I've read :scratchin that says yes or no.

We look forward to meeting you all!! Really! :earboy2:

Welcome Christy, you do not need towels, they will have them near the pool and you can take them off the ship for excursions.
As far as packing go, here is what I am bringing bathing suit, sarong, 3 pairs of shorts, 5 T-shirts, a long dress, a cocktail dress, and 3 skirts with different tops that I can mix and match, a pair of black sandals, a pair of blue sandals, and my tivas.......
sunscreen, camera, snorkeling gears, for everyone. What takes the most room, is my husband diving equipment he brings everything except the tank.
the girls have basically the same as I do, my husband same, just put in pants instead of skirts.......we also do bring 2 cameras, and a water camera, plus assorted medication, we never brought the shoe holder, and never needed it, we have a motorhome and are used to small spaces....
Last year we had 2 suitcases for all 4 of us.
It is coming really soon, I only have 2 more weeks at work, YEAHHHHHH

Welcome, Christy. I'm Brenda from Montreal and this is also our first Disney cruise. We're looking forward to it, but have yet to tell our boys, aged 7 and 9. They think we're going skiing out West.

Thanks, Christine, for the list. It sounds closer to my reality.

Hi Christine! Hi Brenda!
Thanks for your replies and info...hadn't yet thought of excursion towels! Glad to know you didin't miss the shoe organizer since our $ store didn't have them - looked today! I am SUCH the overpacker; I think I'm too worried about not having the "right" clothes that I have overplanned for all three of us.
Have either of you been to Grand Cayman or Cozumel? Thinking probably so since it sounds as if you all are divers - I'd like to learn someday :sunny: I am trying to select and book excursions for our family...our DS is ony 4 so many we cannot book this trip. Any experiences/suggestions will be much apprecaited! BTW how old were your children when they learned to snorkel? DS just passed level 1 swim lessions - pretty basic and will get in three level 2 lessons before we depart. I know he isn't ready just yet, but curious when/how others learned.
Brenda - when/ how are you telling your kids?
Christine - how old are your kids?
Looking forward to meeting your families on board! We are on deck 6 and have 2nd seating for dinner.

Thanks again!!! Christy

Hmmm...telling the kids...

Plan 1 was not to say anything at all...until arriving at the ship. But having been to southern Florida before, the kids would see through that plan as soon as the pilot mentioned the word Florida, especially since they expect to go skiing in Banff. Plan 2 involved a secret Mickey postcard coming our way from Verandah Man (see the postcard thread - though it may be too late for your little one). We had planned to hide the postcard, plant it back in the mailbox two days prior to departure, and then let the kids get the mail that day. But the logistics of packing have made us revise that plan. Revised plan 2 is to let nature take its course and let the kids get the mail every day, knowing that at some point, the card will be there. Then we'll watch the Disney cruise video together so they get a good feeling of what's ahead.

Doing the packing in secret is just too difficult. We both work and we ski each and every weekend, so the only time left to pack is well...never. Once they know, I'll put the suitcases out and do it bit by bit.

Now for your snorkeling/diving question. Nick and Josh were first introduced to the water at the ages of 3 months and 7 weeks, respectively, at a special baby swim school here in Montreal, so it seems they've always known how to swim. Nick could get from the center of the pool to the edge before he could walk well. Pool snorkeling followed a few years later, but saltwater snorkelling is relatively recent. It's the taste factor that kids have a hard time overcoming. But once they see a fish of any kind, the water suddenly seems to taste better :teeth: and then they're off and running. As for scuba diving, my husband and I both used to but gave it up with the arrival of the kids...simply not enough time. Once Josh is 12 and Nick 14, we'll put them in PADI. By then, I'll have to redo my open water anyway, so I'll probably redo it with them. My husband has a higher certification than me...but is probably just as rusty as I am at this point! I envy Christine in that they seem to have kept it up in spite of the kids...

If your little one is comfortable in the water, get him an inexpensive mask and snorkel for experimenting in the pool on the cruise (hmm..is that allowed on the boat...I don't actually know). He won't like the mask at first and may spend more time just breathing through the snorkel than anything else, but with practice he'll figure it out. Our neighbors' youngest is 4 and he is a regular visitor to our pool. I keep one of the boys' starter mask/snorkel sets around and Matthew does his best to "use" it like the big kids.

Hope that helps...

BTW, we're also on Deck 6 and have second seating...
