Feb use year?

Yes but I need 2 years' points so say if I am booking May 2018 I needed the use year for 2018 to be pre May don't I?
For a May 2018 trip with a February use year, you could use banked 2017 points, current 2018 points, and borrowed 2019 points. If you had an October use year, you could use banked 2016 points, current 2017 points, and borrowed 2018 points.

It's always possible to have three years of points available for any given date as long as you plan ahead.

Yes thanks that's what I understood. Feb use year worked wonders for me as I had 2016 banked into 2017 so I can rent out that 2016 and make some immediate cash back. Then use my 2017 and 2018 points for my early 2018 trip (I can't go until then). If my use year hadn't been before my trip date, I'd have had to use those 2016 points thus losing out on rental income.

I guess my point is, the total number of points in a contract is the same regardless of use year. Your use year doesn't determine when you get your points, but only determines which points you can use at any particular time. You could have simply rented out next years points and ended up in the same position.

A recent post about a stripped resale contract is, from what I recall, the ONLY situation where UY made any sort of difference other than in a cancellation situation. And it would only affect their travel plans one time and only because they wanted a trip before the stripped contract had points because of the UY. Other than that, cancellation is really the only reason to pay attention to UY from what I've read over the years.

Each month of points has an incremental value. I'm of the opinion that UY is more important than this issue where UY seems to matter but it is worth considering that a Feb UY is worth and additional 10/12 of the value of a year's worth of points all else being equal. Of course the specific points availability is even more important (stripped vs none, how well can one use the points, etc.
