A little while back, someone posted on this board the following site: http://www.fearofflyinghelp.com/
It is a free online "class" for people who are afraid of flying. I have never been the best flyer, but I can do it because I know that statistically it is safe and it's the quickest way to Orlando (a little over two hours from Chicago, vs. a looooong car ride). But on our last trip, it was very hot and stuffy on the plane, and it made me feel rather panicky and claustrophic because I have trouble breathing in stuffy environments...that, coupled with my usual fear of take-off, seem to bring out my fears more.
Before our trip last week, I went through the website, and I must say that it really helped! The person who created it is an airline pilot for American, and it is full of detailed information on training, maintenance, and the sounds and other things that you can expet to happen during the flight. I have always wondering how planes can be airworthy, and this site also explains the mechanics of flight in a simple manner. It really helped...I was so much more comfortable on this trip. Throughout the trip, I kept thinking,"Ah, that sound was the (whatever)" or "No plane has ever crashed due to turbulance alone." I am a very logical person, so I'm comforted when I know all the facts. I just wanted to recommend the site to other nervous flyers. It has forms you can print out to use during your flight, too, but those weren't necessary for me.
