just reading this thread has given me some fabulous ideas
I spent my childhood vacationing to the OBX and have to say it has changed a lot- in some good ways and some not so good ways.
I probably would have gone there forever if Hurricane Irene had not ruined our vacation plans in 2011.
We ended up booking a last minute deal to Pawley's Island, SC and fell in love with the place~

We are not a fan of large crowds- hence our WDW visits in early May, late Sept and Oct, and early Sept is a great time to visit the SC Hammock Coast (south of Myrtle Beach and away from the craziness).
We also have enjoyed great vacations to Blowing Rock and Valle Crucis, NC in early June.
Families with young kids really enjoy the Tweetsie Railroad
http://tweetsie.com/ they have a Polar Express package during the holidays, and Day Out with Thomas the Tank engine and Friends program too.
Our kids, late teens, really enjoyed the gem mining, the hiking, the original Mast General Store in Valle Crucis, shopping at the outlets in BR, the Linville Caverns, Grandfather Mountain and the Blowing Rock.
Gorgeous views... a standout favorite.
We very much enjoyed a mini-vacation at the historic Fort Lewis Lodge in Bath county, Virginia to celebrate our daughter's graduation.
They have bikes, kayaks, gorgeous views, hiking, fishing, tubing and swimming, a hot tub, fine dining (breakfast and dinner included in your stay and very high quality)

My dream is to stay here for a long weekend with extended family for the PERFECT stress free reunion, but the cost somewhat prohibits that.

Glad to see so many enjoying our Virginia historical vacation spots.
There are so many places a little off the beaten path that are real gems:
Patrick Henry's Red Hill (
http://www.redhill.org/visit.htm ) his favorite home and burial place- visiting here is like taking a trip in a time machine as not much has changed in the landscape since he died.
Thomas Jefferson's retreat- Poplar Forest (

Berry Hill Plantation (

You can actually stay at this plantation.
Historic Appomattox Courthouse, Virginia- where our nation re-united (
