The backlot express was pretty good. The grilled turkey sandwich and frozen coke as a drink were on the dining plan and that sandwich was excellent. Burgers were only ok. Chicken strips were good.
CS establishments at MGM are getting few and far between compared to the other parks. I've been wondering for a while now why most of the places to eat at MGM are TS now. Peculiar.
Anyway, the quality is not that great at any of MGM's CS. You'll find the typical burger and chicken strip baskets at Backlot, and horribly overpriced tiny pizzas at Pizza Planet. The Commissary offers basicaly the same with a bit more variety and inflated prices, and some like Starring Rolls Bakery try to change it up a bit but nothing there ever appeals to me. Personaly if I want to eat CS at MGM I'll go to the Sunset Blvd area and get a turkey leg or even a large fries from McDonald's (aka Fairfax Fries). Fast, cheap, and atleast I know I'll enjoy it.
As for Epcot, there are thankfully many fine CS places to eat at and choose from, it depends more on what kind of food you like. The foodcourt at The Land is a great starting point with some good variety and tastey choices. If you like asian food choose China over Japan IMO. Cantina de San Angel outside mexico is fun and tastey, as is The Yorkshire Fish stand next to the R&C in England. Many people overlook the Patisserie in France for lunch. They have wonderful croissant sandwhiches, french bread pizza's and quiche along side all of the decadent desserts. Yay for Epcot's CS
The counter service places at Epcot are I much prefer to do CS at Epcot than TS. We love the CS in Morocco and the Fish and Chips in England. It's so easy to snack your way around the world. We like to share CS meals here and try more. The pastry shop in Epcot has a nice cheese platter than is a good deal for the size. It's a nice plate to share - and then followup with dessert (yummy creme brulee).
CS at MGM is such a disappointment. Why can Disney get it right at Epcot and totally miss at the Studios
We like Tangierine Cafe in Morocco (we shared the platter-plenty of food. ) and Cantina de San Angel too at Epcot. I like the rice cream at Norway.
We've been wanting to try Flatbread Grill at MGM but last trip we didn't spend much time at MGM. We like Toy Story Pizza Planet. We thought the pizza was good.
We ate at Starring Rolls in MGM, it was the best counter service all week. We got turkey, fresh mozzerella sandwich on foscacia bread, chips and a great dessert (on DDP). The selection is not big (turkey, ham and grilled vegetable sandwiches), but they were awesome. I was told about this place by a nice CM that was walking by and she told me to try it. We went back twice that trip. Linda
