Fatigue.... sleeping 10 hours a night...

depression can make you very tired
I think 10 hrs for an adult is way too much
I'd say I need 7-8 hrs but am plenty happy if I can get 6 1/2 - 7 hrs.
I get up 5:15 am everyday work 6:30- 3:00
have two kids and rarely get to bed before 10pm
maybe you need a vitamin or something
I have lots more energy since I gave up most white flour and sugar carbs (no white bread, pasta, rice or potatoes)
losing weight is helping boost my energy
Do you need to exercise more or change your diet?

I just went through this only I was sleeping 14 hours a day and was still fatigued. If I didn't get a nap during the day I felt light headed and got a headache. The doc did a bunch of blood work that all came back negative. Finally he put me on prescription vitamins and B12 shots. I feel human again. I was taking a daily viatmin before, but it obviously wasn't helping. I did the B12 shots once a week for 4 weeks, then every 2 weeks for a month. I had my last one yesterday. Now, I will only get one if I need it.

I hope you feel better soon!

I agree, have yourself checked for depression. I was the same way. Had all those same tests done and all came back fine. My doc asked me a few questions and I said...but I'm not sad. He said depression doesn;t mean you are neccessarily sad. He put me on meds....and I felt like a totally different person.

Same here. It got to where I was soooo fatigued that I looked foward to having any kind of free time just so I could take a nap. I looked foward to the end of the day so I could go to sleep again. I just always wanted to sleep and no matter how much sleep I got, I would always be tired.

I went to my doc and had all the blood work done and all the tests came back perfectly. She then started asking me about the amount of stress I was under and it turned out that I was under a lot of stress. Stress = depression. Depression does not mean sad. Depression is a serious desease that effects the chemical ballance in your brain, so it doesn't always have to make you sad. You could feel like a totally normal person if it weren't for the fatigue. You might want to bring up the possibility of depression with your doc next time you go...especially if it turns out you are under any additional stress or if there have been like any major life changes recently.

Princess_Aurora.......This response is in no way meant to belittle your depression. However, I feel compelled to bring another opinion to the table in defense of those people afflicted with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS). Too often physicians (because they can't find an obvious organic cause) dismiss this debilitating illness as depression. The CDC recognizes CFS as having prolonged fatigue lasting 6 or more months. Other symptoms associated with CFS may include headache, tender lymph nodes, post exertional fatigue lasting 24 or more hours, muscle and joint aches and inability to concentrate. Too often these people are ignored or told they simply have "depression". While this may be a reasonable diagnosis for some, it may not be for others.

I have a schedule.....I go to bed at 1 and wake up at 10 thats 9 hours per night. It works like clock work too.

Just in case anyone cares ;) ... I do have clinical depression, and I do sleep many hours. But despite being on 2 different anti-depressants for years, I still sleep alot, always have, probably always will. Depression isn't always the cause of sleeping alot. Sometimes it's just what we do.:D

I remember telling my doctor that I just could not seem to get out of bed, but that I just didn't feel depressed. This went on for some time until I finally had a sleep study and was diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea.

Ten plus years ago very few people had heard of sleep apnea. Some people were actually treated for depression (including shock treatments) for years when the problem was sleep apnea.

When I had my first sleep test I would have sworn that I had been asleep for 5 hours, when the technician came in he told me that I woke up every 3-5 minutes and did not ever get any REM sleep. So sometimes sleeping a lot is not really sleeping.

All of that being said - no one here can diagnose your problem - only offer possible suggestions. You could have apnea, depression, CFS, another problem or just plain need more sleep than the average person. A good medical provider should be able to sort this out.

I think that sleep is something that changes drastically from person to person. I know some people that only need 4 hours, and some need 10 or 11. I think its wise to rule out all the possibilities of it being something else, but in the end, I think some people just need more than others.

Personally, I sleep ALOT but I have been very ill and am very very anemic among other things. So it makes total sense that I sleep 16 hours a day!!!!

Once i get well again, it will be interesting to see if my sleep hours go down any... even before being really sick, I always slept ALOT, but I probably have had this disease for awhile and didn't know it...

Just dont freak if nothing is really found. Be honest with your doc about your concerns, and take his word over any of ours LOL =)

I am in the same boat as you OP. I MUST get at least 8 hours of sleep or I am a bear, bt I AIM for 10 hours of sleep. This is something that runs in my family, and I do not think anything is wrong with it. It is just the way my body functions. If I get less than 8 hours I am sorry the next day, but if I get 10 hours I feel well rested. Of course, I am a mother of 4 and I work full time at a very active job. :Pinkbounc

Personally I don't think there's anything WRONG with sleeping 10 hours a night? Why do so people automatically assume there's something mentally or physically wrong with someone who needs sleep?

I agree with the poster who asked "What does your husband want you to be doing besides sleeping?" Usually if one person is jealous of another's sleep habits, it's because that person wants to sleep too!

Although I also have to ask - you said:

I take Allegra daily, as well as Advair, Singulair, Atrovent and Nasonex.

Are you taking ALL of these at the SAME TIME? And if so, is your doctor aware of that? Medicines can react against each other and cause many side effects, depression and drowsiness can be two of them.

You really need to rule out all physical and mental possibilities, and then if you get the all clear - sleep away and stop feeling GUILTY about it!

Oh yeah, he's aware of all the meds I'm on. I just asked him if he wants me to continue to take all of them and he said yes.

Maybe my husband is jealous of my sleep. He is a clean freak and will stay up late folding laundry or a number of other chores, I say they can wait til morning and I go to bed. He says he can't "relax" if there is something "to do".

One more thing to add- I YAWN all day long. I might not even feel particularly "tired" at that moment but I continually yawn.

If I can will. WIth school I rarely do during the week but I do have fatigue so I take lots of naps and sleep a lot on weekends and days I don't have school.

It tends to just make things worse but I can't help it.

I'll trade you husbands. My husband will sleep a lot too...he usually comes home from work, eats, showers and then goes straight to bed. Man, I would love to have a DH that actually did some kind of chores :)

About the yawning...I'll do a lot of yawning myself. My husband explained yawning to me once, but I forget exactly what he said. Something about not having enough oxygen in the body because when you get tired your breathing gets more shallow so yawning is a way for your body to pull in more oxygen.

It's good to get yourself checked out for depression, sleeping disorders, etc.

That being said...your body may just need a little more sleep than anyone elses.

The average adult should get 7-8 hours a sleep, but most can function with five to six. Now, some bodies need longer to rest than others. Especially higher intellects. (Supposedly Abe Lincoln got 13 hours of sleep a day in the white house, and Einstein anywhere from 14-16. )

Also, things such as diet, medication, exercise, can affect sleeping patterns.

I know all this because I used to love researching sleeping and altered conscious when I was in high school. lol.

Some people do need more sleep than others. However, it is good that you are having a CT study of your sinuses. Sinus problems such as a low level infection can really make you tired. Good luck.

Once I started my asthma medicine I do not yawn near as much as I used to. But I still wake up yawning.

Please see your doctor soon to make sure everything is okay. I need more than the general 8 hours of sleep. If I don't get that much sleep I can feel it the next day. Hope you get answers soon and find something to help you.
