I cancelled a fastpass instead of modifying it and now I can't pick up another. According to the CM on the phone, I have to wait until I get in the parks to get another. How have other people done it?

Make another phone call.

The CMs at WDW's IT Dept 407-939-3471 or 407-939-7849 can reinstate your cancelled FP.

You can't do it yourself.

As you discovered, once you "cancel" a FP, you can't replace it.
Guests should not have an option from which they can't recover.
The system is very poorly designed.

This doesn't happen if you have been practicing booking FPs and cancelling them does it? I have tickets and a room only ressie so was able to "practice" booking at 30days but my 60 day window opens tonight so will start booking them for real and don't want the fact that I have canceled FPs for Jan affect me making all 3 FP reservations per day when I start booking tonight for our February trip.

No.
Regardless, if you DO cancel ALL THREE of your pre-booked FP+ on any given day, you can THEN make ALL THREE anew.

The problem comes if you only cancel ONE or TWO of your pre-booked FP+ on a given day, and then ry to rebook new ones…
without canceling ALL of the original THREE.

The system is confusing and poorly designed.

I just cancelled one of mine not knowing I couldn't get it back. I called the Tech helpline, and the CM reinstated it. The only negative to this is that it's not a regular FP. It's called "Choice of Experiences" on My Disney Experience list of reservations, and it is for a specific attraction. I can't change the attraction or the time. I wonder if I would have just asked for a FP for a non-specific attraction that I could change at a later time if I could have gotten that....

Question: Just for peace of mind, my 3rd FP isn't permanently canceled, right? After I use this "Choice of Experiences" FP at the park, will I get back a regular FP so that I have 3 total?

You will not get another "3rd" FP.

You will be able to get an additional "4th" (and, maybe "5th" and "6th") same-day FP... after you have used the first 3 that day (one of those 3 being your "replacement" FP.)

Yes, it was my second chronologically in the day. Nothing changed with the 1st and 3rd. Will I have 3 total normal FP to use throughout the day after I use special replacement?

In other words, is this cancellation a permanent cancellation of a 3rd FP option? Or will all return to normal after I use the special replacement FP?

3 total -- Your first, then the special replacement, then your 3rd.

You will not receive an extra one. The replacement is your third.

I think I know what you're saying. Once you use a FP, you can go get another (which would become #4, 5, 6, and so on), and at this time, I have #1, 2, & 3 reserved, even if one is a special replacement. I guess I just want to make sure that after I use each one (#1 normal FP, #2 replacement FP, and #3 normal FP), I can go to the kiosk and get another so that at any one time in the day, I could have 3 FP reserved. I want to make sure that by cancelling one of the 3 original, I haven't limited my group to only having 2 FP reservation opportunities instead of 3 at any one time. Does that make sense?

No, enter the park and use #1, #2, and then #3.

Then, go to a FP kiosk and select 1 FP for each person. Use that FP and then return to the kiosk for one more and so on.

You begin with the 3 in your schedule and after those three you can only have one in hand at any given time.

C. I want to make sure that by cancelling one of the 3 original, I haven't limited my group to only having 2 FP reservation opportunities instead of 3 at any one time. Does that make sense?

A. No, that is not how FP+ works. (That is similar to how the old, original FP system worked, but not now.)
B. No.
C. You cannot get "another" FP+ until you have used (or let expire) ALL THREE of the original FP+ of the day.
Then, (after all 3 of the original FP+ have been used/expired,) you can only get ONE additional FP+ (your 4th) and you must use it (or let it expire) before you can get another.
Then, you can only get ONE additional FP+ (your 5th) and you must use it (or let it expire) before you can get another.
Etc.

Aha! I finally get it now. Thank you for the explanation!
