**Fantasy Becomes Reality** Group--5/19/2012 (INDEX/ROLE CALL, PAGE 1--ENTRY 1)

Hey friends:
In reading the maiden voyage report (link posted a few pages back here.. thanks Jaymepops!), did you notice all the MV gifts they received. It made me wonder what, if any, price premium is paid on MV fares. I never thought of pulling up the prices when it first came out. Anyone out there do that?

We looked it up when we booked in Early January. We were looking at all the ships and trying to decide which cruise to take based on itinary, price, ship features and dates.......The Maiden Voyage of Fantasy was on the list....although we didn't realize it at the time.....Even thought it was perfect dates for Spring Break from school, we didn't choose it because I've already been to Grand Cayman and Cozumel....it was also DOUBLE for the cruise...we didn't figure out why until we figured out it was the MV.......For our family of 4 with an inside cabin it was about $12,000.00 and some change.......so those "gifts" wern't free! I am sure they were figured into the price per person!

That's how the dvc member cruise works too. It costs a bunch more for the cruise so those "free" gifts aren't free. We weren't all that impressed by the dvc gifts either. Oh well.

We're thinking of trying to upgrade our cabins at the port. Has anyone done that before? Hard/Easy? How does it work with your luggage? Will they figure it out or will our stuff be sitting in the hall outside our original cabins? Lol

It's raining and cold here. I had to scrape ice off the windshield of the car twice already this week. Hello 80's and (mostly) sunshine!!:

Oh that sounds nice, I'm ready to go today! Thanks for posting these, I've been meaning to check to see what the weather will be like when we are there. :beach:

Thanks everyone for your well wishes! Hannah went back to school today and was her usual self tonight when we Skyped, so I'm confident she's on the mend! Your kindness is very appreciated! :grouphug:

We're doing a gift for every stateroom, but I feel it's wise to say upfront that we're doing one gift per room. This will be a family gift, so we won't have gifts for the kids individually. Still, I hope you'll like what we made, and I hope our little joke included with the gift doesn't offend anyone! If it does, please just remember, we were trying to be humorous!

We don't have cruise documents here, but our TA said we'll get them this week. We're excited. I'm starting to figure out the little odds and ends packing tips, and we're buying an over-the-door organizer for hair supplies, make-up, etc.

Getting so excited!!!

T.......and we're buying an over-the-door organizer for hair supplies, make-up, etc.

Getting so excited!!!

Make sure it has see thru pockets! This by far the most helpful item packed on our prior cruises. That and a power strip with a long cord.

So, everyone....here I go again.....responding to one person's post and opening up a new dialog!!!

Name the top three recommendations of what to pack that is outside the norm (clothes, toiletries, shoes....)....we have some new cruisers, and we have some established cruisers....let's share!!!! Let's forego the shoe organizer because it is consistently named thru many threads here on the board.

Mine (other than shoe organizer and electric power strip):

1. shower curtain hooks---not the rings. We hung them on the towel bars, shower curtain bars, and they are a great landing place for wet swimsuits.
2. an underwater camera
3. ziploc baggies in various sizes
4. (ha! a bonus item) The collapsable soda carriers from gas stations and some fast food places. They fold flat and make it easy to carry drinks from the soda station back to your stateroom.

Next!!!

Hello to all of the new cruisers that have posted lately.

I will be adding information to page 1 probably sometime over the weekend. Please use the format that is found on page 1 to share your info, and feel free to email me pictures if you have trouble posting them.....email address is dizdaddy@hotmail.com.

We are gonna be sailin' ya'll, and we are inside the 30 day countdown! I can't believe that we were excited at the 365 day countdown, then the 100 day countdown.

Who has started packing????? We have!

Thanks everyone for your well wishes! Hannah went back to school today and was her usual self tonight when we Skyped, so I'm confident she's on the mend!

So relieved that she's on the mend! We know all too well that when a child is sick, the parent(s) and close family members are sick along with them, wishing to make things better. I'm sure you will be capturing many smiles with her onboard in less than 30 days!!!!

I've not heard anyone mention this before but this is a great idea!!! We always went as a family just so everyone could carry their own drinks.

Other than the things Tony has already posted, the only thing I can think of is my carryon suitcase full of beverages. I love diet dr. pepper and I bring a couple cases and we also bring a case of water.

Ghah! I go to a conference and fall sooooo far behind...

It's now ONE MONTH until we depart!!! PANIC!

Professionally, I do systems work for a law library.

Definitely agree on power strip...we got one that we keep for travel that "expands" so that all the outlets can be used with those large chargers for kindle, phone, etc.

My additions:
1) highlighter markers. These are great for highlighting your plans in the Personal Navigator (we also always pick up enough Navigators for each member of our party - extras are available near the customer service desk) so when we are not together, we still all know the plans!

2) A lightweight string=type backpack (mine is DVC) that is easy to carry around that I just keep packed with all of the "stuff" you may need and saves you a trip back to the room for: sunscreen, umbrella, kindle, sunglasses, sweet'n'low (often hard to find on ships), those little powdered drink sleeves to add to water (I like the lemonade flavors to add to iced tea), a pen/highlighter, pins for trading, a couple of ziplocks to keep your ship map/navigator, etc in so they don't get wet when you are by the pool, a lightweight jacket so you don't freeze when you decide to go for a sit-down lunch, autograph book/marker b/c you never know when you might run into someone "famous" when walking around!!

3) Business cards to exchange that have your email and mailing addy - great when you meet new friends, and/or want to share photos after the cruise (we are still very good friends w/ a couple we met on a Disney cruise!). If you don't have cards, you can make up similar on paper or print on heavier paper on your computer

4)various magnets of your favorite Disney characters to put on your metal cabin door (I did have one of my favorites turn up missing on a recent cruise, so be sure you always keep copies at home for the next trip)...you can find patterns on Disboards for many, including some pirate ears to create a Hidden Mickey Pirate on your door for Pirate Night!

5) small 3oz paper cups to keep in your bathroom for brushing teeth so you don't need to use/share the glasses (much more sanitary)...these are also useful for discarding tampons which cannot be flushed...drop in cup and then wrap to discard in a clean way (sorry, but it is a fact of life and something I learned in my many travels to foreign countries on medical missions)

6) ship-to-shore communications are quite expensive, so I always turn on my International traveler plan for my cell phone (ATT) for calls/messages ONLY - NOT for DATA - so that my family at home has a way to contact me if needed...I only turn it on when in ports & CCay where it won't pick up the ship connection, and my family knows to leave me a text message if something is not really urgent. Also, you want to leave the emergency contact number for the ship with your family: 1-888-DC-AT-SEA 322-8732....but remind them that the caller pays a VERY HIGH FEE per minute for calls so ONLY for true emergencies!!

7. binoculars - esp if you have a balcony room! it is really fun to check out "things" you see in the distance when sailing - not as much to see on a Caribbean trip, but on Alaska and Transatlantic cruises, I saw lots of "creatures" in the ocean!!

8. A "real" camera,(since many people use their phones as cameras now) again, so that you don't have to keep your cell phone turned on and inadvertently connect to the ship's system at a high cost.

9. I pack all of my clothes (shirts, pants, dresses, etc) on their hangars (thin wire ones) so that I don't run out of hangers - takes up a lot less room in your stateroom to hang clothes as drawer space is at a premium. And, nice dresses will travel better if packed in those filmy, thin, plastic dry-cleaning bags - plus, the glitter does not get on everything else you own!

10. Plastic laundry bags (we use bags from past Disney shopping trips) to throw in dirty laundry each day, as well as to pack wet swimsuits if needed on the last day.

11. Most people will need to put their bags out the night before disembarking, so you want to be sure to keep a wheeled carryon suitcase with you, that you can manage when you leave, so you have a place for your nightclothes, and personal items that you kept for that last night and morning...if you have room for a few sample-sized items like shampoo, toothpaste, etc those are good to have on that last day when you have already packed for flying back home.

12. A small purse/wallet with a shoulder strap is very useful when all you need to carry is your ship card/key around to dinner/shows etc...some people like to use the lanyard w/ plastic cases but I prefer a flat wallet to which I attach my lanyard as the strap since I hate things around my neck, and often do not have an outfit w/ pockets.

13. A small travel flashlight just in case the power goes out (I have never had this happen in 20 cruises, knock wood, but have heard of others w/ problems). Especially when you have an inside cabin, it is really dark! and some people like a night light, esp with kids.

14. An old ship or hotel key to put in the light control so you don't accidentally forget to take your current room key out when leaving the room, and get locked out...the new ships have those control slots for turning off the lights/ac/tv when you are not in the room...the cabin stewards will raise them up if you forget and leave them on when you leave and you just have to push it back in when you return...it can be so annoying when you use your ship card and then forget it!

Well, I thought I had one or two things to add, and then got on a roll! Hope some of these tips help some of you!

What to pack outside the norm -
1. Stop by the Quick Shop and pick up a couple 44oz. pops - then bring the cups with lids on the ship with you. Much better container for getting pop up on deck than the dixie cups DCL supplies (if you are a pop addict like me)
2. Highlighters to help you plan out activities on the Personal Navigators
3. bandaids - they are so expensive in gift shop

Hi,

My name is Jeannette & I'm a newcomer. I am traveling with my husband & soon to be 5 year old daughter on the Disney Fantasy May 19th. Can somone please brief me on how I can meet others on this cruise that have kids my daughte's age. Is there a particular discussion board grouped by childrens' age?
Thanks!

Finally scrolling back & getting all caught up again (and "caught up" in the threads, if you know what I mean)...

SS to hear of those who have had to cancel out of the trip, and those w/ illnesses in the family. Will keep you in thoughts/prayers, as well as our friends in the military - thanks for your service, and look forward to shaking your hands in person!

Work: I am a Family Nurse Practitioner working in walk-in community clinics; I also volunteer w/ Operation Smile and have traveled around the world (literally) helping to fix kids born w/ cleft lip/palate. Sounds like we have the medical field well-covered...my DD used to tell me to say that I was an Interior Designer so that people did not ask me medical questions all the time LOL
DH works for a cable/telecommunications company developing new products; he is fortunate to work from home, traveling to Phila PA once a month, so a cruise is his only real vacation, when he has no access to his phone and computer! You will find him totally relaxing on this trip!

Since we were just in the Eastern Caribbean (New Years 2011-12 Disney Magic - great FL resident prices!), we plan to leave the ship only to enjoy Castaway Cay! We did do a nice bus tour in St Maarten last time, just so we could get an overview of the place. The bus driver stopped at the border between the French and Dutch sides, and jokingly asked to see our passports to cross!

And, still offering to share the cost if anyone wants company in their cabana!! There are only 2 of us!:beach:

So A few things:

Professionally my mother works for an Insurance Agency that is owned by BB & T Bank in Maitland Florida. I on the other hand, don't have a job. I go to school at University of Central Florida full time. I lost my job in 2010 and decided that I would go back to school and change careers. I have obtained my Associates Degree in General Studies in August 2011 and my Commencement from Valencia College is on May 5 so just a few weeks to go! Now I am working towards my Bachelors Degree in Exceptional Student Education where I hope to work with students with a multitude of disabilities and learning capabilities. I won't graduate from UCF until either May or August 2014.

My Suggestions for packing are very similar to what others have stated:
1. Over the door clear shoe rack
2. Power Strip
3. A mess laundry bag for dirty clothes. On 7 night cruises we do 1 load of laundry and this keeps our dirty clothes organized and off the floor.

Still no Cruise Documents was hoping the set that got lost would have been found and have gotten here by now. But looks like I will have to wait for the replacement set to get to my Travel Agent so she can then ship them to us. To Say we are disappointed with the Postal Service is an understatement as they have not delivered a magazine we ordered and now lost our Cruise documents. Saturday we will be getting a PO Box as things are not reaching our apartment complex and hope that having a po box will change the issue of losing mail. (we think our actual carrier is mishandling mail, things come open, things go missing, he takes 8-10 hours to deliver mail to just OUR complex. he doesn't have any other places to deliver too and there are only 4 sections to deliver to we sometimes don't get our mail delivered until almost 6pm and if he runs out of time and his punch out time comes, he doesn't deliver at all and we get 2-3 days of mail all at once)

Praise: wow.. I've been cruising for over ____ yrs (don't want to give away age that easy), and keep a list, and there were some new great suggestions of things to bring. Does remind me of a hilarious post on an old "things to bring" thread. It speculated on a compulsive packer who wrote down every item over the years, and could not cross anything off; and guessed on the many suitcases needed to do it all!

Question: 3rd time to do DCL, and once again I am puzzed why such a variety of timing of cruise docs arrival... anyone explain the variety??

Name the top three recommendations of what to pack that is outside the norm. Mine (other than shoe organizer and electric power strip):

Next!!!

I second (or eighth) the clear shoe carrier.

1. camelbak water bottles (unspillable/unleakable) for everyone with a stateroom #/name label on each. perfect: refillable on or off the ship, no water purchases needed.
2. cloth collapsible hanging "shelves" for the kids' clothes. creates more storage and helps them reach their own clothes
3. waterproof cover for my iPad (for the ship) and drysac bags/mesh totes for beach trips
4. small magnetic whiteboard and pen for door (for coordinating with family)

Odd things we pack:
1. hole punch - to make holes in our KTTW cards so they clip onto the lanyards. No messing with the pouch this way, just make sure you don't punch through the magnetic strip! (Ours are usually punched in the top left corner - Guest Services will do it upon request.)
2. zip ties (and nail clippers) - to close the zippers on your suitcase whilst travelling. Keep the nail clippers in the front zipper pouch or carry on so you can clip of the zip ties when you arrive
3. swimsuit cover - so you can go swimming and get food without having to change. You can also wear it whilst walking from your stateroom to the pool. It looks like a (white) dressing gown with a zipper up the front.

Less than three weeks! Four until the cruise!

We are also doing one FE gift per cabin. Something you can use when you get home. :)

Ghah! I go to a conference and fall sooooo far behind...

It's now ONE MONTH until we depart!!! PANIC!

Yes but we leave home on the 12th so we are officially under a month until our vacation. How is that for panic mode. I still need to decide what to wear not to mention get FE's made/ figured out ;)
