**Fantasy Becomes Reality** Group--5/19/2012 (INDEX/ROLE CALL, PAGE 1--ENTRY 1)

I'm kind of catching up on the last several pages, but just popped on real quick to ask for prayers... My little cousin (high school) was in a really bad accident a few hours ago and was life flighted to Akron Children's Hospital where she is in surgery now... This is the article-- she's the one on the stretcher. Kind of scary to see a pic like that and know who it is :( Please send some prayers her way...

http://www.recordpub.com/news/article/5180456

I'll catch up on the other stuff later-- I had all of the multi-quotes selected for a reply earlier so now I'm going to have to go back and do it all again, haha :)

Thank you all for the prayers a while back for our Uncle Tony. Unfortunately his improvement was short lived and unfortunately he passed away tonight. We're frantic here trying to find a flight for my grandmother to fly back to MA/CT from Orlando in time for the wake/funeral. Unfortunately its spring break in the Northeast and finding a flight that is nonstop is really a problem.

Please keep us all in your thoughts we will get through this but we will definitely miss him.

I'd just put her in our car and drive her up there and drive back down here but its Finals next week and I can't. Had it been any other time in my semester I'd skip school and do it but I can't and it stinks.

So very sorry to read this update. Is there any possibility of discussing a bereavrement flight with the airline(s)?

Question: 3rd time to do DCL, and once again I am puzzed why such a variety of timing of cruise docs arrival... anyone explain the variety??

I do know that if you have a travel agent, that will delay you getting the papers because they will go to the agent and not directly to you. Changes in address will cause issues for any sending method that requires a delivery signature, which is our current issue.

Additionally, our agent worked for an agency at the time our reservation was made, and then opened her own agency, so out of the several staterooms we have with our group, all of the others are under the new agency. One of the reasons she left the agency was disorganization and mishandling...and not necessarily getting truthful to responses. We now we are getting conflicting responses on our paperwork, and DCL charges $50 for replacements.

I'm not too worried. Aside from the luggage tags, the booklets contain all of the info that can be found on the website, I believe.

Time for bed! Goodnight all!

For those who have PM'ed, my husband is safe. There was an RPG attack on the U.S. embassy, though it hasn't made the press yet, as well as Camp Eggers and the base in Jalalabad. Greg called in the attack on the embassy and was up all night standing post. But he is fine and all American personnel are safe. Long day yesterday. We are really looking forward to being together for this cruise, it's going to be a nice break from reality, as it will for us all.
prayers sent up

Sorry - haven't had a chance to read all the replies yet, but I'm requesting prayers from those of you who are pray-ers. My sister had to take Hannah to the hospital today because she was not breathing well. Her pulse rate is high and her O2 levels are low. She's got an oxygen tube under her nose right now, which did elevate her oxygen level, but the monitor is still alarming every now and then. She's thrown up a couple of times and has a fever. The doctor said he's concerned because there seems to be diminished breathing on her right side, so they're scheduling some tests to figure out what's going on. A few years ago, in a very similar situation, she had to be admitted to a children's hospital in the PICU for a few days, so this is feeling too similar for comfort. I'm two hours away right now in the town I live but will leave to be with them if things change. Anyway, if you could be praying for the Beck family, we'd sure appreciate it! We know the Lord cares about Hannah's health as much as we do, and we know our fellow DISers are great about offering support in hard times! Thanks, guys! I appreciate you all! :)
hope everything is going better prayers sent up
Hi everyone. My DH and I will be joining you on this cruise.
Just wondering without having to read the entire thread right now could someone let me know if the FE list is open or closed. I found it on the first page but it doesn't state either way.
May be interested if still open.
Thanks
Audrey

Wow - this thread is busy now!!! :goodvibes

So, I have been MIA. My description in job below will explain part but can also say, have family in town including an 18month old. They have been here since the 4th and will be here until the 27th. I don't have any time off during this time so it has been really really busy. My daily updates quit coming - not sure why but have been trying hard to keep up at least reading the boards.

Jaimie -- definitely keep posting!!! :thumbsup2 I may not respond but love reading your posts!!!

Sue, I know the feeling! Feel like that right now!

Oh, thank Heavens he is fine! I agree with everyone, thanks to him for his service and I hope he stays safe and sound. Prayers are with him and all the service men and women.

Very scary -- I hope she is ok! Prayers going out for Hannah. Please keep us posted.

I feel like that - often wonder if people take what I say the wrong way but, guess, you have to take it all with a grain of salt. I am up for an embarkation day meet! Just tell me when and where. We are flying in the night before but staying at the Hyatt MCO and taking the DCL transport in so a night before meet and greet doesn't work for us (unless you all want to hang at the airport! :rotfl2:)

I started to try to comment on everything but got too lost.

So, have to say, think it was fun hearing about everyone's names. Love the career/job thread and the idea of Gotcha day is very very sweet and special! What a great thing!

I know I have missed many things I want to comment on - I am sorry if I can't remember - right now, my brain is fried.

We got cruise docs last week and my Polo reservation is listed for 2? I know I am going to join up with Kathy and crew once we get on board but was surprised they put me down for 2 even though I am the only adult in the room. Maybe I am going to have a suprise date that no one has told me about! ;)

Can't seem to get too excited about the cruise with the house guests. When they leave I will have 3 weeks and will probably then hit panic mode. I am working on FE gifts and hope to have them done in time. Normally don't make but this time am giving it my best shot. Please forgive me if they don't turn out but am worried won't have time to change to something else!

We have Palo on formal night but late. Offered kids option to dress up and to to the MDR for dinner, eat in kids club or eat with me (not eating of course) in casual clothes at Topsiders (or whatever it is called). They opted for the last option so guess one less thing to pack for them. I am still dressing up for both Palo and Remy.

So, for what I do - I work for a large software company and run the Critical Account Management program. That means when our customers (big enterprise, not real people) get upset with us and normal escalation processes don't work, the account managers/service folks/executives/etc come to me. It is my job to breakdown the problems, identify what it will take to fix it and then force our company to work together to solve the problem. We don't always fix it - but success rate is high. So high in fact that it seems everyone wants our help and I am working an average of 80 hours most weeks. I work from home so basically never escape my work. It is a rewarding job but the stress is high and I need a vacation very very badly. The cruise is perfect because I will shut off my blackberry and can turn off work completely for the time I am gone. I hope things slow down before then - otherwise I may be a total mess by the time we get on the ship. :scared1: I know I will enjoy my bubbly - as I usually do - to help me relax. :goodvibes

Ok, off to make dinner for the crew tonight. Again, my apologies for my absence!!! -- Mati
Can't wait not too much longer yet!
Roll call! Kendra (28), my daughter Kaiya (4), & my mom Belinda! Stateroom 5048... 33 days!

Sorry to confuse, guys. My husband isn't military, he's doing a one year tour in Kabul at the embassy there. He is responsible for the security of the American personnel at the embassy and civilians in various posts. His service is the Diplomatic Security Service. Not many people have heard of it, so I usually save the explanations for in person but I don't want people to He works with the military, but (sadly for me :rotfl:) no uniform, though he is a Federal officer. I too admire all the servicemen and women who spend a whole year apart from their families for their tours of duty, at least my husband gets a break...this trip will be his 6 month R&R.

And thanks so much for all the generous well wishes and thought last weekend. In Kabul they actually expect a fair bit of that, but it makes for a long day when it does happen.

So I guess that answers the occupation question for him. I'm a diplomat too, and currently posted in Prague, which is beautiful. Nonetheless, we're looking forward to some "home time."

Can I ask all you more experienced cruisers for some advice? We are doing B2B cruises, the first to get "reacquainted" with just our little family of four, the second we are adding three grandparents and one great grandparent. We have not sailed out of Port Canaveral yet and I was wondering if it is pretty easy to link up at the model ship (or elsewhere) inside the embarkation area? Between cruises we have to disembark and re-embark and we thought it would be nice to link up with the grands and board together, but I'm not familiar with the logistics of boarding there.
No big deal! I'm just glad he is okay
What do you suggest? :confused3

I was wondering the same thing. I was HOPING that we'd do bracelets so that we would recognize each other on board and during excursions. Probably still have time if someone wants to do it. I will pitch in up front money via Paypal if someone takes the lead on it.
I would love to plan brackets but not sure they have the time to get it done. Mmight look at the sites tomorrow!

REMY IS AVAILABLE ON TUESDAY AT 7:40 :thumbsup2. Thought I would let you all know in case anyone was wanting it :hyper:.

So very sorry to read this update. Is there any possibility of discussing a bereavrement flight with the airline(s)?

Thank you we tried a few airlines and they wanted in excess of $700-$1000 for bereavement fares. Just not what we or my grandmother are willing to pay for a 1 way flight.

So sorry to hear about your uncle. I hope everything works out getting your grandmother home.

Thanks it has, not perfect but a solution has been found!

So, so sorry to hear about your Uncle Tony. Please accept our condolences to all your family.

Thank you very much!

We found a flight from Orlando, that flight lands in Newburgh New York my Aunt will drive to NY and pick up my grandmother and turn around and drive back to Massachusetts.

Worked out in the end.

http://www.wrist-band.com/order.php this is the site that I was looking at! The price was one hundred and two dollars for 100 adult and 100 youth I was just guessing! I'm not sure if that included shipping or not!
Just finding this board for the first time! - My family and I will be on the concierge deck - but I forget our room number!...We are in a 1 bedroom suite with my parents! We are so excited.
:beach: welcome to the group! Some of us have been chatting it up on here for two years! You will find us to be a great group! Looking forward to meeting you soon!
Definitely agree on power strip...we got one that we keep for travel that "expands" so that all the outlets can be used with those large chargers for kindle, phone, etc.

My additions:
1) highlighter markers. These are great for highlighting your plans in the Personal Navigator (we also always pick up enough Navigators for each member of our party - extras are available near the customer service desk) so when we are not together, we still all know the plans!

2) A lightweight string=type backpack (mine is DVC) that is easy to carry around that I just keep packed with all of the "stuff" you may need and saves you a trip back to the room for: sunscreen, umbrella, kindle, sunglasses, sweet'n'low (often hard to find on ships), those little powdered drink sleeves to add to water (I like the lemonade flavors to add to iced tea), a pen/highlighter, pins for trading, a couple of ziplocks to keep your ship map/navigator, etc in so they don't get wet when you are by the pool, a lightweight jacket so you don't freeze when you decide to go for a sit-down lunch, autograph book/marker b/c you never know when you might run into someone "famous" when walking around!!

3) Business cards to exchange that have your email and mailing addy - great when you meet new friends, and/or want to share photos after the cruise (we are still very good friends w/ a couple we met on a Disney cruise!). If you don't have cards, you can make up similar on paper or print on heavier paper on your computer

4)various magnets of your favorite Disney characters to put on your metal cabin door (I did have one of my favorites turn up missing on a recent cruise, so be sure you always keep copies at home for the next trip)...you can find patterns on Disboards for many, including some pirate ears to create a Hidden Mickey Pirate on your door for Pirate Night!

5) small 3oz paper cups to keep in your bathroom for brushing teeth so you don't need to use/share the glasses (much more sanitary)...these are also useful for discarding tampons which cannot be flushed...drop in cup and then wrap to discard in a clean way (sorry, but it is a fact of life and something I learned in my many travels to foreign countries on medical missions)

6) ship-to-shore communications are quite expensive, so I always turn on my International traveler plan for my cell phone (ATT) for calls/messages ONLY - NOT for DATA - so that my family at home has a way to contact me if needed...I only turn it on when in ports & CCay where it won't pick up the ship connection, and my family knows to leave me a text message if something is not really urgent. Also, you want to leave the emergency contact number for the ship with your family: 1-888-DC-AT-SEA 322-8732....but remind them that the caller pays a VERY HIGH FEE per minute for calls so ONLY for true emergencies!!

7. binoculars - esp if you have a balcony room! it is really fun to check out "things" you see in the distance when sailing - not as much to see on a Caribbean trip, but on Alaska and Transatlantic cruises, I saw lots of "creatures" in the ocean!!

8. A "real" camera,(since many people use their phones as cameras now) again, so that you don't have to keep your cell phone turned on and inadvertently connect to the ship's system at a high cost.

9. I pack all of my clothes (shirts, pants, dresses, etc) on their hangars (thin wire ones) so that I don't run out of hangers - takes up a lot less room in your stateroom to hang clothes as drawer space is at a premium. And, nice dresses will travel better if packed in those filmy, thin, plastic dry-cleaning bags - plus, the glitter does not get on everything else you own!

10. Plastic laundry bags (we use bags from past Disney shopping trips) to throw in dirty laundry each day, as well as to pack wet swimsuits if needed on the last day.

11. Most people will need to put their bags out the night before disembarking, so you want to be sure to keep a wheeled carryon suitcase with you, that you can manage when you leave, so you have a place for your nightclothes, and personal items that you kept for that last night and morning...if you have room for a few sample-sized items like shampoo, toothpaste, etc those are good to have on that last day when you have already packed for flying back home.

12. A small purse/wallet with a shoulder strap is very useful when all you need to carry is your ship card/key around to dinner/shows etc...some people like to use the lanyard w/ plastic cases but I prefer a flat wallet to which I attach my lanyard as the strap since I hate things around my neck, and often do not have an outfit w/ pockets.

13. A small travel flashlight just in case the power goes out (I have never had this happen in 20 cruises, knock wood, but have heard of others w/ problems). Especially when you have an inside cabin, it is really dark! and some people like a night light, esp with kids.

14. An old ship or hotel key to put in the light control so you don't accidentally forget to take your current room key out when leaving the room, and get locked out...the new ships have those control slots for turning off the lights/ac/tv when you are not in the room...the cabin stewards will raise them up if you forget and leave them on when you leave and you just have to push it back in when you return...it can be so annoying when you use your ship card and then forget it!

Well, I thought I had one or two things to add, and then got on a roll! Hope some of these tips help some of you!
love it and thank you! :scared: worried now about all we have to pack!
Hi,

My name is Jeannette & I'm a newcomer. I am traveling with my husband & soon to be 5 year old daughter on the Disney Fantasy May 19th. Can somone please brief me on how I can meet others on this cruise that have kids my daughte's age. Is there a particular discussion board grouped by childrens' age?
Thanks!
pixiedust:Welcome! I don't have children going unless you count my baby who will have just turned 19  but I have seven year old twin nephews and a four year old neice and a five year old nephew! You are on the right spot to talk to parents . You can check out the roll call on page one and see everyone's age! Hope that helps

prayers sent up, Jen . I'm so sorry that you are going through this. I hope all is well soon!

so sorry to hear about the loss of your uncle and the travel issues. Our prayers are with you and your family. I am a firm believer that people get a good day before we go! It seems like your uncle got a little more. I think that is Soo cool! Life is a funny thing. Good luck on your finals and we will see you soon.

I know we discussed this awhile back, but if my understanding is correct, my daughter who turns 11 will be able to choose either the lab or the tween club. She will need to make that decision & stick with it, correct? Does somebody have a good summary or link to what the differences in activities will be between the two?

I'm interested in 2 adult/3 youth bracelets :)

Helpful hint/must pack item....pre printed address labels for the luggage tags you have to attach to your luggage the last night.

Lots of neat ideas...adding notes to my packing list :). Love the idea of shower hooks for wet swimsuits!!
