I have never done fantasmic, and plan on doing it during my next trip. If I am unable to get a fp+, what time should I line up to see the show? This will be a Saturday, the second weekend in May, on a night where there are 2 shows, we want to see the 9pm show, and then head over to close out the Magic Kingdom.

And if I use all my fp+ before 1pm, what are the odds of adding a fantasmic fp?

With or without a FP+...
just arrive at the F! theater 50-60 minutes before show time.
You'll walk in and find a seat and sit down to wait for the show to begin.
You can bring in snacks for the wait, and there is even a concession stand at the top of the theater seating.
There is a "pre-show" that starts about 30 minutes before show time.
(Nothing to get excited about, but it can soften a half-hour of time.)

And if I use all my fp+ before 1pm, what are the odds of adding a fantasmic fp?

Your chances of getting a F! FP+ as a 4th or 5th FP+ (even later than 1PM) are very, very good.
There are PLENTY of them issued. (Nearly HALF of the theater seats, thousands of them.)

Again, even WITH a FP+ I'd arrive 50-60 minutes before show time to get the best choice of seating.

So, does a FP+ help at all (assuming it's available as a SDFP)? Does it give you some benefit, or is it not something to bother with?

You will have access to MOST of the theater with a FP+, but only about HALF of the theater without a FP+.

Map Below-
Arrows indicate the center of the seating.

Shaded areas:
(First or Only F! performance of the evening)
Cyan= Standby (walk-in) seating
Red= Dining Plan Reserved
Blue= FP+ Reserved
Purple= Can be either FP+ or Dining Plan Reserved, depending on needs.

(Second or Third F! performance of the evening)
Cyan= Standby (walk-in) seating
Red, Purple, Blue= FP+ Reserved
(Although much of the outer Blue will likely be used for Standby.)

I've only done Fantasmic once and I had a fast pass for it. Since I can't speak for going without a FP+ take this with a grain of salt, but I felt like I didn't really need it. I actually wished I used it for Toy Story instead of waiting the 2 1/2 hours for it. I went into the theater and sat way too close to the projections. They said you may get wet up close and they aren't kidding! Its not a couple of little splashes here and there it's a steady heavy mist throughout the show. My popcorn got soggy and my wine got watery! Maybe it would have been better sitting further back but I feel like you could go to the show without a FP+ and still be able to see everything perfectly fine.

DH loves F! so we always do it, regardless of FP.

Like Robo said, get there about an hour early and you'll have no problems.
