Family Visit During Gay Days

For the person who said "don't your kids watch TV" - my child is limited on what she can watch and therefore is not exposed to such behavior on television. There are others who have the same guidelines for their children.

Oh thank you! AMEN! And Hey, love that pic of Legolas! :lovestruc

We spend the summer on Cape Cod and often venture up to Provincetown for an afternoon. We were caught by surpise when our oldest was just three at the "parade" one afternoon. Hysterically raunchy yet there were many families equally caught by surprise. He's now an 18 year old macho rugby player and has many great friends both homosexual and heterosexual. I'm sure our kids have seen it all and trust me they haven't been scarred in the least. They have grown up as pretty open minded yet politcally conservative teenagers. We must have quite a live and let live attitude. "Not that there's anything wrong with that." I don't shelter my kids at all but they do know what my personal values are. As teenagers they feel (and I concur) that any PDAs (public displays of affection) as just gross doesn't matter the sexual orientation. Same with offensive comments on t-shirts, just not necessary for anyone.

My family was at WDW during Gaydays this past June, and had no one told me, I would have never known. While I did see handholding, etc, I saw no more than I would expect on a regular day and nothing that I would feel uncomfortable explaining to my children. Have a great time!

Yep, and I'm glad!...their entertainment CM are the absolute best and put up w/a heck of a lot of crap from the public with grace & style; without being compensated greatly (WDW is not know for their excessive salaries).

Lifestyle choices are just that, personal choices. You might want to "protect" your children from discovering alternative lifestyles but, the world is not a vacum...we'd all be better off with alot more tolerance and judgment.

I prefer the "don't ask , don't tell" adage; whether it's sexual orientation, religion, political affiliation or gross income.

As for PDA's, IMO they're usually gross and inappropriate @ theme parks in general. Even in bars & clubs, I always think...get a room!

My brother and his "friend" do that while visiting DisneyLand - which is often. And both are very masuline manly men, too. Hard to picture. :clown:

Thanks for all of your comments and suggestions! Doesn't sound like there will be an issue.

Stay far, FAR away from downtown disney. Lets just while on my college program my manager asked me to pick up some extra hours at PI. Sure no problem. He forgot to mention it was at managuins, it was gay week, and even worse, the big gay night. I had guys letting me know how I could make "a little more money than disney pays" what I could do after I clock out, what they wanted to do to me, etc. When you pack a club full of 1600 gays, its gets pretty scary. I saw daisy dukes that would make most bikini bottoms look big. I think more guys were topless, than wearing shirts. The cleaning crew stopped cleaning the bathrooms because of what they reported seeing. I could go on and on.

From what I've heard, the parks are not that bad. Just expect the typical stereotypes, and a little pda here and there.

Speaking as "one of them" id have to say its "us" who cant stand seeing you "heteros" kissing during firworks, or holding hands while you walk down main street, or showing affection during a meal. I mean really the way nobody cares is appauling! God forbid I wanted to do that, id get every billy bob and his wife/sister making a comment while pulling their kids away. Any idea when we can go to avoid that. Oh and p.s. its DISNEY... like 70% of the company is gay ... HELLO!!!!

I posted this on another thread. So here's the copy and paste:

I have some comments to post, stirred by the posts from thelionqueen and others. I will try to remain as unbiased as possible, although I have very strong opinions. We are at WDW all the time. We've often been at the world during gay week. Here is what we noticed last year.

There was one bill board along I-4 with the website and dates of gay week.

The crowd levels are affected at the designated park on the designated day. (You have that with any large group function at WDW.)

Some t-shirts worn by people were very questionable. There were equally questionable t-shirts protesting.

As for PDA, we did not notice any more PDA than usual. You have to remember that Disney attracts people from all over the world. (Hmm, I'm trying to word this carefully.) What's PDA for one culture is not PDA for another. (In some cultures it is customary to greet a friend with a kiss on the lips. Other cultures, girls link arms as they walk...and this doesn't mean it's a sign of affection.) This is a very common sight at WDW.

As for seeing gay couples at WDW, you really would have to be looking for it to see it. In all our years of going to WDW our son only noticed twice. Most couples, gay or straight do not seem to be all over each other at WDW.

As for explaining "things" to children: I'm always explaining things to my children. There are so many things in this world that go against my family's values. When my son sees something and asks about it, I explain what's going on and how I am either in agreement or in disagreement with it and why. Then he can form his own opinion.
