DS is very interested in doing a genetic test that traces our ancestors, so I was thinking I would get him a kit as a Christmas gift. Has anyone ever done this? Did it give you any interesting information, was it what you were expecting in terms of the amount of info it gave? Where did you get the kit?

I got a kit for my brother and we have all shared the results. He is the last male in my father's line (no sons from him or my younger brother) so we wanted to get his DNA in the project. We found it very ineteresting to see the route of our ancestors to England and then America ...

We were able to transfer the results over to a family genealogy site and have documented our line back to 1723. We have found tons of ancestors registered in Finland and other Scandanavian countries which leads us to believe that our forebearers may have been Viking invaders of England.

If you are interested in learning more, I recommend the book, Before the Dawn

I have a distant relative who had it done, he's a [Smith] son of [Smith], but we don't match up with *anybody* in the family-database with that name. This particular family-name came into our common family-tree in the late 1700s and we can't find out *anything* about our particular ancestor. We don't know where this guy came from, what his background was, if he had any siblings or family... Lots of varying legends about him in the various family-groups but nothing is sourced or proven. Our haplogroup is R1b1b2, which is Celtic, includes aboriginal British & Spanish/Atlantic coast.

But we don't match up with anybody in any known database...*sigh*.

agnes!

cool, I find it amazing that they are able to tell these things just from a swab in the cheek. Good to know that they work. Did you order from Family Tree DNA ? Or Ancestors.com . I think I will get for him for Christmas and then he can do a paternal test and I will get one for myself and do the maternal line. Hoosll, thanks for the book recommendation I will look into it :thumbsup2

Oddly enough, my Mom has been sending me pictures today of my great grandfather and telling me some stories. My family comes from Germany, but my grandmother's maiden name is Ludley - very British name for a German , and she remembers seeing pictures of people in kilts at her Uncle's house. so maybe the DNA test will answer some questions.

I have heard of this but never really thought of it before. What level of detail do they provide. I think this could be interesting for my dad but I would want to know a bit more about it first.

I think you can get both maternal and paternal lines from his. He has the X and Y!
