We (my sisters and brother and families) are going to have a family pic done for my Mom for xmas.

A couple of years ago, DH's family did the same thing. We wore jeans and white shirts for that shoot.

I think I'd like a little color for this shoot. We have the advantage of having it done at any time this summer or fall so we can do whatever we want. I think it will be at the park.
What to wear? Jeans I think, but shirts all the same color? Or individual families in different color shirts?
hummmm.
Thanks.

We did one for the IL's with my boys and dn. They wore khakis', and my boys wore navy shirts and dn had on a red one.

Thanks. I was thinking perhaps different colors for the different families....

I´m thinking, if you´d do it in the fall and outside, maybe one family could wear brown shirts, one orange, one yellow, etc. and then all kaki colored pants.

You can see my family photo in white and blue jeans in my signature. One son in law had a fit but oh well, it was my picture. When they took a family photo on his side everyone wore whatever they pleased. It just looked messy to me. LOL

I like the idea of different colors for the different families. I will remember that one for next time!

Nice pic.
We did all white shirts last time with DH's family. We want some color this time.
DSis says "kids in red, grands in blue and greats in white".
So we will see. T-shirts are cheap and easily found.

We will be going with Jeans though. Nothing fancy.

I've run the office and done sales for a very nice portrait photographer for years. If you decide to go each family in one color, make sure the color tones are the same. Lay them out on the bed and kind of squint at them....if one stands out too much you might to lay that color aside and try another. If you decide to go with color by generation, be sure the smallest people (grandkids, I guess, for your group) are in the brightest color. A bright color on a bigger person could draw all the attention away from the kids.

I personally think everyone in white is too stark and draws attention to the white shirts and not to the peoples faces. If you are going to do an outdoor photo in a park, here's what I'd do. Everyone wears jeans. Girls could wear dresses if they choose (not all of them have to though). Then you want the shirt colors to flow across the people in the photo.

When we did our outdoor family photo, I had on a heather gray shirt, DD wore a gray dress with silver flats, DH wore a muted green polo shirt, and DS wore an open muted green and brown plaid shirt with a white t-shirt underneath. Everyone but DD wore jeans (she had on a simple dress). The photographer complimented me on the color choices and said the colors all flowed really well with the background.

If this is during the summer, think of brightly colored summer clothing in solid colors -- no large prints or designs on the clothes.

Take a look at some photographers websites and see what people are wearing. Just google "outdoor family portraits". Keep in mind the colors chosen should coordinate with the season & background.

We have been doing them with just the kids of the family for the last couple of years. We did one where they all wore jeans and white shirts and we lovingly refer to it as the cult pic. After that we just have them wear jeans and a solid dark color top, not the same color. :)
I think as long as you don't have anyone in a print, and you keep the colors either the same or the same tone (light, bright or dark) that it will come out fine.

There used to be a shampoo ad where all the families wore different color polo shirts - light colors with khaki, I think. One family had pink, another light blue, another yellow, another green. It looked great in the ad :thumbsup2

It's been awhile since we had a multi-generational portrait done but I remember the photographer saying that all should wear the same sleeve length. We all wore blue jeans and wore some sort of long sleeved blue shirt. She never said that we shouldn't wear prints so I wore a gold long sleeve shirt with a blue jean vest with embroidered flowers. My mother wore a navy blue vest with a white blouse with tiny flowers. My sister and her husband wore blue and white shirts where the colors were sort of largely blocked. That's the best I can describe it. My husband and my dad each wore blue shirts that had a very tiny print on it, so tiny that you can't pick it up in the picture. The grandkids all wore solid shirts. My daughter's shirt had two white stripes across the chest area. The only coordinating we did was pick the color blue. It was taken in October in a gazebo with the trees turning orange and yellow behind us. The picture turned out great! If I had a scanner, I post a picture.

I've never been fond of the white shirt pictures until I saw a friend's family's picture. It was taken at the beach. Each wore a short sleeve white shirt with Dockers.

That is the one exception to my white shirt rule -- beach photos should be in white. If the group were very large though, I may not go all white with everyone. Maybe white flowing summer dresses for the girls and then something else for the guys.

Definately no strong patterns! Different colors in the same family look good and not boring like white and blue/kakhi. Last Christmas I did browns, khakis, ivory and golds and it looked good. You could also do pinks and reds for the girls and whites and blues for the boys. Also yellows, greens, with a little bit of blue would look good. Not everyone has to be matchy, matchy their colors just have to complement each other.

We mixed some colors within the family. We all wore jeans, and some of us had on white, some had light blue, and one family member wore a shirt that had white, light blue, and brown in it. It all came together really well. Next time, I'm going to mix it up a bit like that.
