Is anyone else considering day tripping to the US for vax ? I’m debating .. I’m scared they might have a reaction while we were there and obviously travel insurance won’t cover medical procedures ( I know rare but I’ve seen medical bills from the USA .. an allergic reaction could cost thousands and thousands )

Not us. We are very much pro-vaccine in our house, but in our case, the travel and potential exposure along the way would outweigh the minimal benefits of getting the vaccine at most 1-2 months more than if we just stayed home. Not to mention, on return to Canada they wouldn't be considered fully vaxxed so they wouldn't be able to go to school for 2 weeks. We'll hang tight until it's available in Canada!

I briefly considered driving the 10 minutes to get to the U.S. and rejected it. The risk seems negligible for kids to get seriously sick with Covid so I am not in a rush. Would the kids not have to self isolate upon their return? Then the cost and hassle of testing. Then I may have to do that all over again for the second dose. No thanks. I’ll wait for it to get approved here.

I would probably get the shot if Covid was more deadly to kids, our numbers were higher and approval in Canada was not around the corner. Coverage or not.

We are an hour drive , so that’s different and we could literally just enter the pharmacy and come home , And both boys are remote learning this year .( C would find it hard to miss hockey for two weeks after tho )
Everyone’s situation is so different :)

My concern is the definition of “around the corner “ and will it be as messy of a roll-out

Both of my kids are young so it's not worth it IMO. They will both likely get vaccinated by the end of January but in Canada. If either had underlying health conditions I would likely consider going to the U.S. since it's such a short drive.

No, we aren't considering it (and we live 20 minutes from 3 land crossings). We don't need to worry about travel for her til March break and she will be vaccinated in Canada well before then. She's missing Disneyland next week but I think I'm way more bummed about leaving her behind than she is about staying behind 🤦😳🤣

I’m not considering it, but mainly because then he would have to not go to school or other things for 2 weeks. And we would need a PCR test as well. So we will wait.

I am considering it. I'm only an hour away from the border and my son is homeschooled. I'm also very close to a town whose postal code has the lowest vaccination rate in Ontario. I will see how the next couple of weeks play out as I would not want to take a vaccine away from an American child, but if they have a surplus....I just might make the drive. Does anyone know if they will vaccinate Canadian kids?

Do you think they'll be vaccinated by then? We have a trip planned for first week of March and am really crossing my fingers!

I myself wouldn't do it. What if something is wrong with the batch that your child is given, or some type of error is made in administering it? How would public health in another country be able to track you and contact you, just in case?

I never cross the border into the US even for a day trip without having medical insurance coverage. I personally wouldn't do it for the purpose of getting the shots (and I also am very pro-vaccine).

I would never either because I’ve seen the bills .What I meant was travel insurance would not cover someone undertaking a medical procedure while traveling and that’s where my fear is
We usually have yearly policies as the boys are dual and visit their dad occasionally in the US

I mean, given this very specific set of circumstances, maybe? But otherwise, no. Not worth the risk for most of us.

Absolutely. Maybe I'm being naive but I truly think they will have one shot by Christmas and be fully vaccinated before Valentines day. I really believe this.

The current planning that's been done and covered in the media from BC and Ontario Public Health both suggest that this will be the case. Sadly, my daughter can't get vaxxed until the summer either way.
