Yesterday was DD's first day back to school. Well so much for surprises.
I wanted to tell DD, on her birthday next week, that we would be going on a Disney Cruise with Grandma and Grandpa. All the kids at school came up to her and asked her about the Disney Cruise. No Pixie Dust here...Just wet tissues.
She found out because I joined our trips Facebook group. I guess it posted to whom I don't know???
I never really use Facebook, but joined for my High School reunion around 2005. I didn't think about the parents from her grade school that requested friendship on my account.
I also didn't want people to know we were going for two reasons. 1) I'm gone for a week. 2) Also it sounds so boastful or prideful that I can afford the trip. So many of DD's friends are on public assistance since my area had several large companies leave the town largely unemployed. A few years ago my neighborhood had 2 foreclosure homes for every 1 home for sale. Its so weird I'm so happy and at the same time embarrassed to go on the trip.
This weekend when my DD is free from homework I will ask her to show me how to open a Google account so I can get FE information.
Does Disboards offer a way to make a spread sheet available to a private group?
Does anyplace offer Facebook classes? I show that my current job is a 1980 census taker from when I was a teen! I knew what to do when it was just a simple texting type format. Now its just over my head. 2 weeks ago a former class mate of mine must have liked a soft porn site. Yuckie! Not talking to him at next reunion!

...

I don't know how to do it, but our first Cruise Meet (here on DISboards) had their FE lists on a Google spreadsheet. I can't remember if they actually posted the link on the meet thread or if it was emailed to all of us.

Social media has been embraced widespread by the world. Having a means to easily access information is the key to staying in the game. disbooards lacks that ability right now. Facebook provides that easy access. The issue boils down to the agency that owns Disboards and the possibility of erroding sales. I say that because we all know that is the sole reason for this place. One look at the post above mine will confirm that. I like visiting here but find it cumbersome to navigate threads. Facebook feels more like a community. There are great private groups that have a ton of information and tens of thousands of members. Some are run by agencies while others are a free for all. Questions are answered as they are here and relationships are developed. I say choose what best fits yyour lifestyle. In the end, we all love Disney Cruising.

I think it's ridiculous. The meet groups are way better on FB. It's easier to find topics. The ones on the DIS are hard to follow. Questions get buried in pages and pages of the thread. It's a shame that they've done this. Social media is the way of the world. To ban groups on FB seems backwards.

I think this is totally funny!

No one has said you cannot use FB! There are some, myself included who have chosen not to and the reason is none of your business!

You are entitled to your opinion about social media and FB in particular - but please stop belittling those of us for what ever reason decide not to use it.

I can say that I personally find it confusing and cannot figure out how to find information I want there - and I DO NOT want to learn!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I like DISboards because it is Disney information! If I want to have a meet thread here for my cruise I think I'm entitled to that and the FB enthusiasts should respect that and leave it alone instead of hi-jacking and inviting everyone the the FB group for the sailing - sorry I want to be part of a smaller community where everyone has the DISboards in common.

Quite trying to compare - FB and DISboards are not the same type of media! And quite trying to make me feel like I'm uneducated because I chose not to use FB! Go ahead if you want to! If it is so much better than DISboards - WHY ARE YOU HERE? Just trying to drum up more members?

I feel the same way. I do not have FB and it is because of my job. I enjoy reading Disboards and helping others when I can. For my next cruise we have a great group on both.

It's over. Cruise meets on this board are nothing but requests to join fish extender groups for the most part. No other info. Everything else is done on Facebook. Something about people thinking facebook is more private (not the case by the way)

Someone can make a topic and then the comments show up to that directly. It is way easier to manage and see everyones comments about a specific topic when they are all under each other chronologically trhan trying to follow a 150 page thread with quotes all over the place.:groom:

I totally agree!!! :upsidedow

I don't use Face Book or any other social media. Because....I don't want to.
I didn't join the FE this cruise because it was only done that way....as it seems all the other discussions were. So I just resigned I will be part of none of it. For the first time.

All the other cruises there have been FB pages, but the organizer was nice enough to discuss everything here too.
The Dis pages are very few for the cruise.

Listen, do whatever you want. Stay only on the Dis. Resist Facebook for all you're worth. Stubbornly cleave to the old way of doing things and refuse progress. That's fine. Who cares?

Just know that on my upcoming cruise (23 days!!) we have:

170 active members in our FB group
120 people participating in FE (divided into smaller groups)
2 meet-n-greets on embarkation day (one in D-Lounge!)
2 Private Mixology Classes with 26 people each
A Beer Exchange with 20 people participating
A Christmas Ornament Exchange
And a photo scavenger hunt

We're having pre-cruise meet-ups the day before at MK, MNSSHP, DTD and Fishlips

We have shared 204 photos privately with only our group, and uploaded 18 files including recent Navigators and an Excel spreadsheet for the FE.

So basically, it's YOU that are missing out! Not us. I only need the Dis for info and answers to questions, and it is WONDERFUL for that! My main source of accurate info! But for a cruise meet or an FE? Nope. Don't need the Dis, at all!

Oh, and we posted the info here and told people to join the FB page to make it easier ad only one person ONE opted not to join us on FB, so she is participating and communicating via email with us and we are keeping her in the loop. ONE PERSON only!

Since you don't really know how to use FB, I'm guessing your privacy settings (such as they are) aren't customized.

So when you joined that group, all of your FB friends SAW that you joined that group. And if the group isn't Secret, every time you posted to that group all of your FB friends saw what you posted.

Not that you can hide everything on FB like you could about a year ago, but you can do *some* things.

Yeah, recently reactivated my FB acct for a specific purpose. I find trying to mess with settings & stuff very confusing and unclear. The news feed, wall, whatever... It's all very confusing and cumbersome to me. I know everyone says to take the time to learn it but:

A. Who's teaching it? Trying to figure it out only confuses & discourages me more
B. Ain't nobody got time for that.

I'm there for the purpose I need right now but hopefully that will be resolving soon and I can get back off.

I like cruising with less things I need to do and things scheduled. It's nice to not be in a bigger group. I rarely bump into anyone I need to converse with. I'm friendly, don't get me wrong. It's just nice to check-out more and relax. ;)

My Mom (71) learned Facebook at a free class at the local library. Took her an hour a week for a month. She's all good now, commenting and sharing all over :lmao:

Edited to add: There is a very extensive Help/Support section on FB that effectively teaches all you need to know!

That's great! All our activities are optional, of course! I'm not doing beer or ornaments and only one of the meet-n-greets and Mixologies. Also, I chose a smaller number of FE cabins.

However, it sounds like the pace of the Dis meet ups is more your speed anyway, so good for you! Clearly, you aren't one of the ones that complained ;)

is there really a pace for meet ups?every group I've been in on disboards and Facebook has been the same, just wasn't sure if I was missing something lol

Well, sounds like sweetpee_1993 doesn't need a lot of options because she doesn't like to do a lot, so the fact that my cruise has a lot going on appears to be a turn off. So, good for her that the Dis Meets are so slow. She won't have to worry about too many activities planned.

I'm sure there are others who feel the same way.

Just not everyone, clearly, because someone complained in order for a mod to come in and decide to ban FB links. To those people, I say, your loss.

haha, try going on the cruises I've been on there as dead on facebook as here :cool1:

Don't get me wrong I've had good cruises too, but those cruises seemed to have people posting on disboards and facebook. They one where not many were on disboards and we used facebook well it was the cruise I met no one, it was still great though since for 3 and 4 nights I don't get to know people as well

No, I didn't complain. People will do what they like. In the past I participated in larger, more active DisMeet groups but on a limited basis to my liking. Sort of like you described with your chosen participation level with the FB group.

The best DisMeet group we ever got involved with was a smaller, tighter group for a 5-night Magic sailing in May 2012. I enjoyed it because it was a smaller group. That's just me, though. I find I'm more comfortable in smaller groups. I was part of a group of 27 ladies/friends who sailed on the Dream last September. This year we're down to just 6 of us and I find myself more excited than ever. With less people everything feels more low-key. I feel like I'll have a better overall experience because I'll have more opportunity to connect individually.

So, even if the DisMeet groups don't get as large, active, or involved as the larger groups that's not necessarily a bad thing. What's nice is for everyone to find a place or group they're comfortable with to enhance their experiences. If that makes sense.

At the core Dis is an extension of a business. Just as it's logical for Disney to not want costumed guests at the Halloween parties taking pics in the meet-n-greet form to protect/control the guest experience as well as their character integrity, there is some logic to Dis not wanting to be physically tied to all the FB groups. What if something bad happens? Dis can't have any control or say in those external groups so it makes sense that they wouldn't want to be linked or tied. If something bad happens they can't have anyone claiming that they endorsed the FB groups in any way or had any part in them. This could be a move to shore themselves up legally. Just trying to think outside the personal side to this. Ya know?

Aaah!! Now I think the nail has been hit on the head with those two comments! Money and control.
