Facebook Banned from DIS!

I don't see how this can be taken too seriously when 2 months after it was written is the first that anyone is hearing about it. Nothing has changed since then. FB group meets continue and will continue to do so. At least 1/2 of our cruise meet people have never heard of the Dis until we put a link to them on our FB cruise meet. To top it all off, the DIS has a Facebook page... Yep, you heard that right.. I belong to it..

While I use various forums and sites including Dis and FB, and I see pros and cons to each, I actually did prefer the "old" Dis-meet style before the days of redirecting to FB.

However, I think the change in policy here should have had an official start date. While any OP of a Dis-meet thread can easily go in and remove their FB link if it's in the first post, the link is usually re-posted by them and many others in numerous places throughout the thread. To make the policy retroactive really complicates things and would totally fragment the threads. I suppose the Dis can just automatically block the links though. :confused3

I see this as a classic example of new media supplanting old. I have used, and do use, and very much appreciate the DISBoards. I expect to continue using it, and referring to it.

At the same time, I'm also a member of a secret fb group related to an up-coming cruise, so I see, and experience, both sides of this debate.

DISBoards is great for general queries, discussion about DCL policies, and other things that relate to Disney that are not personal. However, with the steadily rising incidence and threats emerging from spam, phishing, and scams, it is becoming increasingly risky to divulge personal information in an open forum like the DISBoards.

OTOH, the fb group to which I belong has a gatekeeper, who is the woman who organized the fb group. She has screened and barred people who have tried to get in who weren't going on the cruise, and who (probably) wanted to use the group to promote something they were selling, troll the members, or use members' personal information to scam them in some way. Because it is a more secure forum, people feel safe, and there has been a lot of personal give-and-take, and a lot of shared confidences, including names and photos, about themselves, their homes, and their families. This probably would not have happened to this extent on the DISBoards because of its open nature.

Unfortunately, this comes at a cost. People who are not on facebook, like my DW, resent that they are being excluded from the cruise meet. It's also possible that a fb group incorrectly excludes people who are legitimate cruisers, or has a gatekeeper who is dictatorial and controlling, and excludes people he or she doesn't like for whatever reason. Since all of these forums are operated by people, there will always be mistakes in judgment.

As a number of PP's have commented, this horse has bolted. I suspect that all that this policy will do is to drive people further into the arms of facebook, relegating DISBoards to a declining relevancy. What the DISBoard policy is seeking to do, IMHO, is to turn back the clock and make facebook go away. That won't happen, no matter what policy DISBoard pursues, and may cause the kind of splintering of cruise meets already discussed.

I suspect that if DISBoards wants to continue to be the pre-eminent forum for cruise or any other kind of meets, it needs to change to become more like facebook, with greater privacy controls, and opportunities to create closed groups.

This is only my opinion, and it is quite possible I'm wrong, but this is the kind of thing I study professionally. Media accrete, they don't disappear. So radio didn't die when TV appeared. And movies didn't die out when VCRs appeared. But they did have to change their business plans, and so will DISBoards.

DISBoards can't go back to the way things were 3-5 years ago. facebook is here to stay, and so are fb cruise meets. Instead, DISBoards should think about using some kind of ju-jitsu, co-opting fb groups and incorporating them into a DISBoards superstructure. This would make both DISBoards and fb more valuable.

Until something like that happens, I suspect that we're likely to experience the kind of "are you with us or against us" mentality that is becoming so prevalent. We will have "cruise meets should only be on DISBoards" people raging against the "cruise meets should be organized through the DISBoards, but meet on fb" crowd, and vice-versa. That would be unfortunate.

I find both media – DISBoards and facebook – to be valuable, and will continue to use both.

I've learned much from both sites. A shame to limit the exchange of information IMHO. I don't see this as a rivalry. More exchange and assistance is better than less, no matter the topic.

I prefer Disboards discussions to FB, just MO. I am frustrated when I see a meet start here, then someone says "join us on FB." Oh well, we will see how it plays out. Bobbi:goodvibes
I agree. We have a cruise planned for nov of this year and I've joined the FE and meet on the DISboard. Someone started a FB group and now I feel like all of the discussion happens on FB...even the FE list was posted on FB. Yes, I have a FB, but part of the anticipation, excitement and planning for my cruises has always involved coming to the DiS boards and interacting with the folks on here. I miss that feeling.

Assuming FB is secure is the biggest mistake its' users are making. Just google how often it's hacked. No gatekeeper is protecting anything.

So happy to see this and hope the DIS enforces it. I have "used" both DIS and FB. I much prefer the DIS atmosphere.

A very well written honest and to the point post thank you, fully agree, yes our FB Cruise thread for the Med this very had people " selling" allowed to join and spammed posts promotion tours in Turkey 24/7, and others were added who were not on our cruise but just wanted to post there.

I fully agree that as the horse has bolted this will do harm back and not be effective.

Feels more about protecting advert income on clicks to the site lost to FB as it will do the opposite to the stated reasons.

I'm actually glad. I liked when the people planning meets and the FE were actually sailing on my ship.

:)

Frustrates me too. I use FB but I won't mix the two.

Sorry-- I think this is elitist to say no links. There are many benefits to being able to have a link to the DIS from Facebook, and vice versa. :crazy2:

Thank you for your reasoned reply to this situation. I appreciate the time it took to answer it.

I thought I've read that FB doesn't allow DISboards links? :confused3

I don't think they are saying you can't mention that there is a FB group on the DIS Cruise Meets. You just can't post a direct link to it.

You can link from FB to anything on the Internet anytime, I have dines so often.

Well, once again you've read wrong. ;) As a matter of fact, links to this thread have been posted on a number of FB meets.

Depends on how you interpret this statement. "Solicit" does not limit itself to simply posting a link.

We have also decided to no longer provide opportunity to solicit DIS members for other forums/social media.

Agreed.

I do it all the time to " refer" traffic here.

I agreed a wider statement there.

I wonder if that expands out to links to Blogs? Outside trip reports? Photo links?

So basically, You can not post a FB link on your cruise meet.. However, You CAN send it to anyone on the Dis as well as give it out to anyone that asks.. :rolleyes1 I am wondering if people here think that the cruise meets are going to be larger here on the DIS because of the link ban.. I am positive that nothing will change and that people will still congregate over at FB just the same as they do now. There are FB pages dedicated just to DCL thread meets.. They are going no where..:)

I am so upset as I am not on FB and not one person from our DIS group goes on this site it seems. Even PM'd the person in charge of FE and no response. It's only on FB and we can't join the FE since I'm not on there. Very sad. I wish DIS was as active as it used to be!

I enjoy disboards and Facebook. I understand that some folks cannot or will not use Facebook, so have no problem trying to keep everyone informed in both groups.

I don't see this new ruling as a good thing. Shouldn't information flow in both directions? It would maximize the ability to plan ahead for a good time. Guess I don't see the big deal.

I really enjoyed all the official posts from the DVC members cruise on Facebook last week!
