Hello, boys and girls. Welcome to the Fab Five trip report 2010. For those of you who are familiar with KC Mike, well, I am his DW. We are going to co-write our trip report because I tend to be a little critical of his trip reports due to lack of details. He will be posting pictures as well as giving us his perspective because let’s face it, husbands and wives do not always see eye to eye.

Before I get started, I wanted to give you a little bit of our backstory. Mike and I have been married for almost 20 years. Our first Disney trip was when we were engaged back in the Summer of 1990. His parents took us on the trip to spend some time all together as a family before the wedding. We have gone on several vacations with Mike’s parents and brother. I truly consider all of them my personal family. Our first Disney trip sparked a love for Disney in a way I just can’t describe. In the past twenty years, we have spent our vacations at a Disney Park 10 times. It’s funny because Mike’s dad would just shake his head at us when he would hear that we were heading back to Disney after going so many times. He couldn’t understand why we would spend every dime we had just to go back for another week. He loved to travel but just didn’t share our Disney addiction.

Mike and I have three children, DD1 – 15, DD2– 12, DS – 12 (they are twins). Our family has had a very hard year. Just a month before our vacation in 2009 we lost Mike’s dad to a fatal heart attack. Mike’s mom insisted we go on the vacation so we went for the kids, but our hearts were so broken, we had a very hard time enjoying our Disney home. While we were there, I didn’t feel good at all. Once we got back, I had to go to the ER. I was diagnosed with an ulcer, the first of many medical problems that summer which ended with my doctor finding a lump in my neck in September. It was thyroid cancer. Everything turned out okay, the cancer was only in the thyroid and they were able to remove all of it. However, the family receiving a cancer diagnosis right after losing Big Mike, it was a very difficult time for Mike and the kids. God and our family got us through a very tough year. So we felt another Disney trip would be in order. So whenever I hear a CM ask “What are you celebrating”, I always think to myself, LIFE.

So the planning began in March. We had been to Disneyland the last three years so I thought it was time to head back to Disney World. But I hurt my back in May and I knew that I wouldn’t be able to walk all over DW so we canceled our DW trip and started planning a trip to DL. It’s funny because after I hurt my back, I was so afraid to tell Mike that I didn’t think I could make it in DW and if he would be okay going to DL. I was so scared that I would mess up his vacation. But he actually said that he really wanted to go to DL instead of DW in the first place, he just didn’t want to hurt my feelings. In order to give me time to heal, we scheduled the trip in July. We were a little nervous about crowds and heat but we didn’t give it much thought because were so excited just to go back and spend time with our kids, nothing else mattered.

And the trip report begins...

July 20th, 2010 - Daybed or no daybed?

We flew out of Kansas City on our Southwest flight early in the morning. We arrived in LAX at 9:30 a.m. We had heard a scary story about the Disney bus service and so I worried if we would have any trouble with our Super Shuttle service. I was also worried about the daybed issue at the Grand Californian. Since we have five in our party and the GC only has daybeds in about 10% of their rooms, I was freaking out as to how everyone would be able to sleep comfortably. We had no idea that this was the case until about a week or two before we left. I called GC when I heard about it and the CM was very nice but couldn’t make any promises. She explained that the hotel was sold out for that week and there was just no way to guarantee a room with a daybed for us. But she did let us know of the wonderful sleeping bags they have available. I don’t know about any of you but I don’t like the thought of laying on a floor where hundreds of feet have walked. Not to mention the other things that they have found on hotel room floors in special investigations by 20/20. Mike and I decided not to take a chance, so we bought an air mattress just in case one of us didn’t have a bed.

The night that I spoke with that sweet CM at the GC, she did give some good advice. She told me to call a few days before to remind them of our need for a daybed and to also call the hotel as soon as our airplane lands to get checked in as early as possible. So I did. Once we got into our position to wait for our Super Shuttle, I called the GC. The CM that answered was so friendly, I felt as if she knew me personally. After getting checked in and answering a few questions, I asked her if we were able to get a daybed. She said, “Yes, just like you requested”. Music to my mickey ears! She said that it would take about an hour to get from LAX to the hotel and that they would be waiting for us.

Shortly after my conversation with the CM, the Super Shuttle pulled up and we jumped on. We were the first on board so the driver had to circle around to find others who needed a ride. The van was very nice and the trip wasn’t bad at all. We arrived at the GC in exactly one hour just like the CM had said. Our room wasn’t ready so the Bell Service took our luggage and they told us they would call us when our room was ready. We headed to White snacks for lunch and then went to Disneyland.

The sights and smells are delightfully overwhelming as you are walking to the park. Disney really knows how to take you to a place that really is the happiest place on earth. Nothing compares to it. When I walk through the turnstile and I am greeted by that big beautiful Mickey face, tears fill up in my eyes. I can’t let any of my family see my face because they would think something is wrong. They would not understand that I’m just overwhelmed by that wonderful feeling I only get when I’m stepping in this magical land. We head down Main Street. I’m loved the American flag banners. It really takes you back to those good old days. Sleepy’s Castle looks as beautiful as always.

We rode Pirates first which happens to be our family’s favorite. I believe we rode it three times that day. We also went on HM and Pooh. Around 3:30 p.m., we received a call telling us that our room was ready so we went back to the hotel. Our room was beautiful. It had two queen beds and a greatly appreciated daybed for my DS. We also had a refrigerator, a dresser, a balcony overlooking the front entrance and plenty of space for a family of five.

If you have never stayed at the GC, please do so. I know that it is very expensive but the location, the pools, and the atmosphere are just amazing. The lobby is so warm and inviting. They play this very soothing music overhead and it completely relaxes you. I even asked if I could buy the CD of it, and the CM stated that it wasn’t available for purchase because it was just made for the hotel alone.

After we rested for a few hours, we headed back to DL. My back was hurting by this point so my DH rented a wheelchair for me. I thought I would be totally embarrassed by being wheeled around but Mike was so sweet about it. When he brought the wheelchair up to me he said, “Your chariot awaits”. It just melted my heart, I fell in love with him all over again. I am in awe of how well he takes care of me.

We wanted to see Fantasmic! since it was closed last year. Since I was in the wheelchair, we had to go to a special area for wheelchairs. The section is way over on the side, close to where the Mark Twain docks. I didn’t know if we would be able to see the show very well. There was no need to worry because it was a wonderful view. The dragon was amazing. The villain section was really scary but fortunately Mickey saves the day. After Fantasmic!, we went back to the hotel. It was so nice to not have very far to walk. When everyone was settled in their beds, we turned on the TV to the Bedtime Story channel and fell asleep to Belle telling us how she fell in love with the Beast.

Stay tuned for day #2 – The Wonderful World of Color….

Here are some first day shots...

Of course this is very familiar to those arriving at LAX

Glad to hear how long it took you to get to DL from LAX. I think we will fly in there also on Southwest to save money over SNA.

And the pictures are beautiful too. Looking so forward to more!!

I ended up taking over 2200 shots this time around. Sounds like alot I know but you'll find that you take the same shot over and over sometimes because you feel like it just didn't turn out quite the way you wanted it. Sometimes I find myself taking a shot and finding out that I had set the ISO way too high as well and completely missing the opportunity I had. I'll let you in on the fact that the kids don't always appreciate Dad stopping in the middle of Disneyland wanting to take a shot of some sign or unique angle of something. As I look over that vast amount of shots I did manage to get I still find myself wondering why I didn't shoot something that I just remembered.

Enjoying the pics and report so far. Thanks for the double team posting!

Did you get any pics of the room? Hard to find a pic of the 2Q+daybed room. Does the room have a daybed instead of table and 2 chairs?

Howdy neighbors! I was hoping you'd do a TR so I could see everything you did with that UWA!

We also stayed at the GC in one of those rooms with a daybed overlooking the Hotel entrance. I told you you'd be spoiled for ever staying anywhere else ever again!

Looks like you're off to a great start.

I'm so glad to hear you had something to celebrate this year. Congrats of the clean bill of health!

Which part of KC are you in? We're MO side in Independence.

The Fab Five heads back to Disneyland – Part 2

Day 2 – The Wonderful World of Color

This is the day we have waited for, ever since we booked our Disneyland Vacation. We read all of the reviews about World of Color, checked out all of the news about it, and obtained as much advice from the boards as we could to make sure we would be able to see this show. KC Mike even brought it up on YouTube for us to watch back in June. However, after the scene of Buzz fighting Zurg, I asked if we could stop because I really wanted to be surprised. With a bit of hesitation, we agreed, no one in our family would watch the show in it’s entirety until we were right in front of it.

So the day began with breakfast. KC Mike’s favorite meal of the day is breakfast. He just loves it. So for a treat, we thought it would be fun to eat at Storytellers for breakfast this morning. My DD2 and DS hate breakfast and decided to stay in the hotel room and have Poptarts while the rest of us went downstairs.

Storytellers is a beautiful restaurant. There are many characters there like Chip and Dale, the Brother Bears and Meeko. You can either order directly from their menu or they had a breakfast buffet. I assumed that everything would be on the breakfast buffet so I told the waiter that we would have three buffets. Unfortunately, I ordered the buffet before I looked at it. There wasn’t much that my DD1 or myself liked. Since we come from the Midwest, we tend to like biscuits and gravy and pancakes. They didn’t have either one. My DD1 got mad at me instantly, she said that she was going to order right off the menu and get pancakes before I just took over. I apologized. Lesson learned, do not order for someone until you know for sure what they want is what they will get. Then it was my DH to the rescue, he explained to the waiter of the pancake situation, the waiter went back to the kitchen and brought my DD1 a plate full of pancakes. (Why didn’t I think of that?)

The breakfast was okay, definitely not worth the $96.00 that we paid for it. Do you know how many eggs that could buy? We went back to pick up the rest of our group and headed to CA.

We first went on Soarin, which is our family’s 2nd favorite next to Pirates. Since it wasn’t busy, we got to ride it again later that morning. I don’t know about any of you but I love setting in row 1. It may sound crazy but I feel more apart of the action from row 1. We went over to Monsters Inc, no line. We went to Muppets 3D, no line. Then went over to Animation Studio, not too crowded there either. I thought July was to be one of the most busiest times to go and we never had any problems getting into any of the attractions, except Toy Story Mania which we rode later that afternoon.

We ate at Test Pilots for lunch, absolutely delicious. The ribs were as good as Kansas City’s ribs. That says a lot because KC is the BBQ capital of the world. We rode Silly Symphonies in which we all loved. You can see so much. I love that the Orange is gone. Then we took our place for the Pixar Parade. A little note here, no one in my family cared about seeing this but I had never seen it before so they stayed for me. They all really seamed to enjoy it.

After the parade, the girls and I headed back to the GC to spend some pool time. DH and DS stayed to ride Grizzly River Run. They met us back about an hour later at the pool. Okay so here is my opinion of the GC’s pool area. AMAZING!!!!! First of all, those lounge chairs are so comfortable. They have about 4 inches of cushion that gets warm from the sun. Once you snuggle in one of these beauties, you never want to get out. I noticed over the course of the week, people sleeping on them. I even took a nap myself on one once. Next the hot tubs, the smaller one is much hotter and seems to be crowded quite a bit. The larger one is wonderful it is back out of the way so there isn’t much noise. It is also in a shaded area so the air is cooler and the water was so warm and inviting. We loved it! Last but not least, the pools were awesome. KCMike and the kids loved going on the waterslide. I decided to opt out on that one because of my back. This is the one of the best pool areas we have ever been to.

We had purchased picnics so we were assured a fast pass for WOC. When we went back to CA, we picked up our picnics and ate. We had the American meals. It wasn’t as bad as I thought it would have been. I liked the recycle bags that you get with them. After dinner, we went back to ride TSM, KCMike had the highest score. We then went to the area where they were lining up for WOC. DH had my wheelchair all ready. The CM’s took us in first because of the wheelchair. We were in the blue section what looked like the third tier up. There were benches for the kids to sit on so that was nice. We loved the preshow. We were on Tigger’s team, but Mike from Monsters won that night for being the loudest.

World of Color began. I knew what to expect for the first few minutes. It really is so beautiful. Since I hadn’t seen anything past Buzz fighting Zurg, after that scene it was really the beginning for me. You see a balloon go up in the air. Then more. Up came out shortly after KCMike’s dad passed away. This movie was very symbolic for us because of Mike’s dad’s love for traveling. There in WOC, as I watched all those balloons go up in the air, I immediately started to cry. I don’t know how Disney and Pixar do it. They really seem to know our hearts, don’t they?

As we went through scenes of my favorite shows, I was just in awe. The part when Simba’s dad was killed and Simba was looking for him, it turned very dark and quiet. The crowd was silent as Simba was crying out for his dad. I’m still crying. Then one of my most favorite songs came on “So Close” from Enchanted. We watched as some our beloved Disney characters go through some of their toughest obstacles but then the princesses start getting their first kisses. Just beautiful. I know not everyone will like this show, but I loved it.

After the show, we went back to our room. It was even a closer walk than the night before because GC has an entrance/exit on the side of CA. That night we fell asleep once again to a princess telling us about how she fell in love. I believe that night was Cinderella. I was so tired, I fell asleep the second my head hit the pillow.

Stay tuned for our next installment – Splash Mountain vs. DD1

Alright time for another photo update:

I shot a few black and white shots this past trip as well. I will try to work them into a later post. They were some of my favorite shots. I really struggled with night shots. I brought the tripod all the way from Kansas City and it was just a nightmare. I hated carrying it around the parks. I hated the way the shots turned out. For me it was kind of like when you start to try something new (like playing an instrument) and you just want to give up. I thought it would be much easier. I shot at different ISO levels. I shot at different f-stops. I just couldn't find the sweet spot. The pictures just looked horrible in my opinion. I much prefer trying to find that unique angle. I feel like I'm getting better at framing my shots as well. The ones above are your standard point and shoot and then hurry up and find the family. The castle shot has an obvious horizon issue. The picture is tilted. I am not much into post processing but I will have to figure out how to get it straight. I love that the spotlights were on above the castle. I really do like the ultra wide angle though. How can I talk the family for getting me this for Christmas??

Here are our kids at the GC pool:
IMG_7370.jpg

More to follow.

Mike, I didn't even notice the horizon issue until you mentioned it! That's an easy fix. I have an OLD Photoshop Elements program and even that can do it easily. Do you have some sort of program? I'm sure someone here can tell you how.

I think you did great. It's so hard to find a happy balance between focusing on family on a family vacation, and focusing on the photography. I AM envious of those who live close enough to go to the parks by themselves to focus on photography sometimes. I'd never want to sacrifice family park time to do it though.

What was your issue with the tripod? Maybe you need something lighter and smaller for travel? I was pretty happy with my new one for this trip.

Remind me again, is it the Canon 10-20 you rented for the trip?

You have a fine looking crew!

Part 3

Splash Mountain vs. DD1

So we are already to day three of our wonderful trip. Since we spent most of the day at CA the day before, we dedicated this day to Disneyland. In order to ride everything we wanted to ride we decided to take advantage of the MM. We arrived at the front gate around 6:40 a.m. There were only about four families in front of us in our row. We went straight back to Fantasyland and rode Peter, Toad, Snow White and Pinocchio. We were able to walk right on each ride. We then rode on Dumbo which was KCMike’s very first time. He loved it. Alice was down so that made us sad but the teacups cheered us up.

We then went over to the River Bell Terrace for breakfast. The kids had already eaten breakfast in the hotel room earlier so they went on Pirates while KCMike and I ate. I must say breakfast was so good, not to mention, a lot cheaper than Storytellers! To be honest, I believe this might have been my favorite meal and I’m not even a big breakfast eater.

After breakfast, it was time for Splash Mountain. KCMike went to get our fast passes while I was in line getting our breakfast. Splash Mountain has always been an issue with my DD1, the first time she rode it was back in 2004 when she was 9 years old at WDW. Back then she didn’t want to ride it but I talked her into it. It has always been so much fun for Mike and I, I just knew my children would love it also. Again, I was wrong. My DD1 was hysterical after the first hill. We bought the picture of it. You know, the picture they take of when you are going down the big hill as you are screaming. The look on my DD1’s face was pure terror. Even though I felt horrible that she hated it so much, I had to buy that picture because I knew I probably would never get her back on this ride ever again.

Fast forward six years later, I know not to ever ask her if she wants to go on Splash because I know what the answer will be. As we are walking over to the ride, completely out of the blue, my DD1 says, “I would like to try Splash”. Everyone was so excited, we were all going to ride Splash together. We got on and Mike let her know about each hill that was coming up. My DD2 was riding with me in the backseat. She has been on this ride a few times at WDW but not at Disneyland. I know that she is not a fan of the big hill but I didn’t think it was any big deal. Throughout the ride, we kept checking on DD1, making sure she was doing all right. Then comes the big hill, we go up and then down. DD1 did awesome. She made it through and even said she enjoyed it. DD2’s outcome was a little different, however, I didn’t notice until we got to the picture station. When our picture came up, I saw that my DD2 was so scared that she had grabbed my shirt. She grabbed my shirt so much that it didn’t really look like I was wearing a shirt. Needless to say, we didn’t buy that picture.

We headed back to the hotel and took a nap in the room. When we went back to the park, we went to see Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln. I enjoyed it but I think the kids were a little bored. We did some shopping at the pin store in Frontierland. We actually spent quite a bit of time in there because once we were finished it was time to find a place for Magical. Mike found us a wonderful place to sit at the Partner’s Statue. We were so excited to be so close to the castle. However, we didn’t realize that since we were on the west side of the statue, the trees completely blocked our view of the fireworks. We were trying to take pictures with Mike’s tripod and camera. It was a disaster. I felt so bad that we just couldn’t get a pretty picture at all. After the fireworks, we went back to see Fantasmic for the 2nd time. The crowds were CRAZY! Everyone trying to get into the viewing area was pushing their way through what seemed to be thousands of people trying to get out of the area. Mike was pushing me in the wheelchair and I was beginning to think that we were going to get trampled. By the time we got to the wheelchair area, CM’s were having trouble letting wheelchair families in and keeping everyone else from sneaking under the ropes. I haven’t seen anything like this since Mike took me to a Bon Jovi concert in the 80’s. Once the CMs received some BIG strong help (I didn’t know that Disney had bouncers), they were able to rid the area of all the people who snuck in without a wheelchair. By the time we got settle in to watch Fantasmic, the kids wanted to go back to the hotel. I think they were just overwhelmed by all the people. We told them that it would be worth it if we just waited a little bit. Fortunately, the kids made a new friend while we were waiting for the show. His name was Nick, he was so happy and had such positive energy that it completely took the negativity right out of my kids. He was telling us about his trip and all of his adventures. He should do his own trip report! Fantasmic again was terrific.

We tried to be the very last in the park, which didn’t happen but we did have a lot of fun riding on rides as everyone else was leaving the park. That night Snow White told us about her story of love, betrayal and living happily ever after.

Stay tuned for an amazing day at the beach……

Yeah I rented the 10-22 for the week. I was using it for the tripod but it was a wash out for me. I needed better practice. I had tried before in KC with the tripod for July 4th but we had rain that night and the fireworks were cancelled. I was thinking of going to Friday Night Fireworks at Kaufmann Stadium (Royals) but it never panned out. What do you find for best settings, lenses, and such for shooting fireworks?

Can you believe I've never ridden Dumbo? The lines are usually so long at Disneyworld and it just didn't interest me back then. I had seen some cool shots of Cindy's Castle though when people were on it down there so I thought what the heck. This shot is at the beginning.

Here is one of the Splash Mtn photos. I just took the camera right up to the screen and snapped away. This is from the second time we rode it later in the day.

Hope you all are enjoying.
