I live in ct which does not have any tolls. I was thinking of getting the ez pass and was looking at nj and they say it costs $1 a month to have. So I went to NY and can't find anything that says they charge you a monthly fee. Anybody familiar with ez pass. I will be driving down to florida in september and every now and then my parents go to Pa and they could use mine. I don't want to pay a monthly fee.

I also have a Fastlane Transponder from MA which I got when I still lived up there and commuted into Boston daily.

It is now used maybe 2-3 times a year when we go back to visit. I don't get charged $1 a month just to have it, because if I did, they can have it back.

I live in CT too.
I just got my EZPass in the mail last week.

My understanding of the rules are that only NY and NJ residents have to pay the $1 maintainance fee.

I have EZ Pas thru the state of De. and we do not pay a monthly fee but I do think they charge you for each of the transponder units you get, I think it was $20.oo each,I do not know if all states are doing that.

We got one because we had started driving down. I was charged a service fee of $1.00 in Feb, March and April. I don't receive any paper statements and I have a credit card attached for automatic replenishing. The automatic replenishing kept me from paying the charge to get the unit.

Here is a list of charges:

SCHEDULE OF DEPOSITS/ADMINISTRATIVE FEES
Monthly Statement Fee by mail/e-mail $1.00 bi-monthly fee
Monthly Membership Fee $1.00
Per Tag deposit (cash and check customers) $10.00
Per Tag deposit (credit card customers) waived
Duplicate copy statement fee: .75 regular mail .11 e-mail
Fee for defaced, damaged, lost or stolen tag: Interior: $21.00 Exterior: $33.00
Returned check fee: $25.00
Tag misuse: Up to $50.00 (per occurrence)
Violation administrative fee: $25.00 (per occurrence

You can get an EZ Pass from any state that uses it regardless of where you live. You can choose what state depending on the rules and the fees. Some states offer toll discounts only on EZ Passes issued by that state.

EZ Passes (also Fastlane and I-zoom) are not honored in Florida and Florida passes (Sunpass, E-pass, Leeway) are not honored in the northeast.

I did my EZ-pass on-line. We are also in CT and I went to the NJ site for EZ-Pass and filled in all the info for our three cars. Since I use a credit card for the money on our account, we received all 3 transponders for free. The only charges we get are when our account goes under $25. and they just automatically add money to our account with the cc. If you don't get it before your trip, you would be able to get one at basically any of the service areas. I know the first one you come to the the GSP has them. The EZ through NY/NJ/PA/Delaware - it will not work in FL. They have the Sun Pass and it is not compatible.

I know NY tried to implement a $1 service charge if you did not use the pass in a month but that got shot down pretty quick. I can't answer for NJ though. I know I have never gotten hit with a service charge and I only use the ez-pass a couple of tie a yeay.

Also, for the record, Illinois' I-Pass, which is E-Z Pass compaitble, has no monthly fees...

If you let others use your transponder, make sure you add the vehicle tag to your account. You can do that online very easy. If the transponder doesn't register, the toll authority will match the tag with the account. If the tag is not listed on the account, you will occur additional fees in addition to the toll.

I have both EZ Pass through NY and Fast Lane through MA as both offer discounts for certain use within each state's toll system.

Fast Lane is now free for the transponder (up to 4 on account) with a credit card deposit for account refresh and has no monthly service fee. You get a significant discount (~40%) on MA Pike tolls at the Allston/Brighton tolls into Boston only with it.

EZ Pass is free for the transponder (up to 4 on account) with a credit card deposit for account refresh, but does cost $1 per month per account. Discounts are available at NY thruway and the New Rochelle tolls, but not at NYC bridges and tunnels.

Both systems work from Maine to Virginia and west to Illinois.

We have EZ pass from NY and never paid any fees. it wouldn't be worth it for us then since we only go through the tunnel or over the bridge once every month or .
