Extra screening-just wow...

Greetings,
We went to MK last Tuesday. I was all prepared for the "You have been selected for..." speech meaning that you would have to do the extra security check. However, in watching out for my child, the stroller, my brother, etc... I forgot all about it.

A security guard walked up to my child and said, "Who do you love more? Mom or Dad?" I turned and said what??? He repeated that question to my 6yr and I said to my child, don't answer that. Then jokingly said to the guard, "Don't ask him that, you are going to scar him for life!" I know that isn't true, but I wanted the guard to rethink asking that question to any other children. (It could have put a damper on the day if my child had thought he had to say which parent he loved the most. He is an only child.) The guard then said, "Ok, who do you want to go through security check?" I told him that was easy-DAD!!! We laughed and Dad got to go through security. (Dad had not heard any of our conversation.)

I truly feel that the guard did not mean to cause offense or want to upset me or my child. Maybe they don't have the same training as the CM's. Please make sure you monitor your child's adult interactions. I was very surprised by this whole interaction because we were in our Disney bubble.

I would agree that the security guard used a poor choice of words. A failed attempt at humor IMO.

I know it is said that ALL CM are "part of the show" and are trained to act accordingly. But security guards should be exempt from this IMO. I don't think they should focus on anything other than safety and security of all guests and CM. Especially given recent events this week in Orlando.

Same here. Guess I'm not seeing a place for outrage or even a blip on the radar of concern
I would have joked right along with them to quiz just who was the answer (of the moment) because any parent out there knows that a kid has a favorite at some points.

I remember someone asking me the same question when I was a little girl. I also remember the proud look on my Mom and Aunt's faces (Dad was out of earshot) when I looked at this lady that I barely knew and said I like them both the same, that's a silly question.

Agreed, especially since in this case it accomplishes nothing. Security guards are the ones who are supposedly trained to keep an eye out for suspicious persons or activity. Fulfilling an apparent security quota by asking who is the most convenient for a screening is not a security effort.

I think this situation warrants a comment actually.

You can't tell by looking at a child that they might have a difficult time with a question like that. Now if you ask my teenagers, they would love answering this Not really an appropriate question for a young child in a stroller though.

I hear what you're saying, but just how are they supposed to know that? In using your same rationale, pretty much anything they say could upset a child. Some kids are frightened by strangers just asking "Hi, how are you?" I've actually seen the security guards ask my kids that question, and we all laugh. They're trying to be jovial and make people smile in a situation (waiting in a long line then going through extra security check) that could be miserable. Cut them some slack.

Ouch. This smacks of I'm better at being a parent than you, implying that if my child is sensitive, its my fault. Really, wasn't going to comment at all, but I don't know how I would feel. Probably not offended, but then I know my daughter would say "Mommy" lol. I do agree though, there is a better way of joking with children.

Not at all. It's simply my approach to parenting.

It's still random, because the guard didn't pick that person. I don't necessarily agree with it, but if random is what they're going for, it's random.

If he truly thought I was a risk, he would have pulled me through. Just because he said something thoughtless doesn't mean he can't do his job.
