extra holiday charge to eat?

Only buffets and all you can eat family style or fixed price restaurants.

I believe it is in effect from December 16 or 17 until January 3.

I agree with this but I dont think it is really fair at all, prices on dining at DW are high to begin with

I agree. We're leaving on Dec 15 and I'm glad we won't deal with the holiday surcharges because I'd probably be all grumpy about it.

I am glad we are on the free ddp, it won't affect us at all.

I agree 100%, but others feel that it is supply and demand and it is OK with them because it is Disney.

What really gets me is the surcharge on the DDP for 2010. Even if you do not eat at any buffets you have to pay the surcharge. It does not affect me since I would not go at these peak times, but I think it is disgraceful. Just a way to get another $5 per person ($1 per kid) per day for the DDP. Do the restaurants get any of that extra $5? (the ones that are not buffets that you eat at if you are on the DDP?) I doubt it. It goes right into Mickey’s pocket IMO.

It's also not just the December Holiday season.

Yep, I think some people tend to forget about the affect on tips. For any one meal, it's not significant, but over the course of the entire vacation, it really adds up.

Yes, it was really great when we used the Free dining the first time in 2007 (I know not the first year for free dining but our first) the tips as well as the appitizers were included. Now the prices are up as well as having to pay the tips out of pocket.

If you think the increase is not fair, then boycott the increased buffet prices. I agree that increasing the prices during the holiday season (still trying to figure out what holiday the month of July is ) raises what is already pricey for guests room wise

The holiday pricing includes a large portion of non-holiday times...This past year the dates were April 5th- 18th ,May 24-July 12th . Disney designates certain times of year "holiday" because of increased demand on the dining system

That makes loads of sense and I do it. But I don't care about character meals. Anyone wanting a character meal is stuck, because all character meals (except the one at the Swan resort) are part of the increase.

I too think it is crazy, but I am wondering just what extra is on the buffets and such that is not normally on the menu? I have yet to hear of anything? Now if they did offer more, it might make a little more sense.

That's the whole point, there is nothing extra. We go for 2 weeks each July, as I'm a teacher, and it's the same food and service you would get weeks later once the surcharge is off, then when it's on. It's just an upcharge due to it being a 'peak' crowd season. Disney charges this fee because they can charge - as a guest, you don't get anything extra for your fee.

That's why it's so infuriating. The rooms are already booked at a premium but they feel the need to beat the guests down for a few more dollars a day just because they can. This is beyond supply & demand but pure greed.

Imagine what would happen if....we all stayed offsite and brought in our meals/snacks/water.....then ate at the offsite restaurants. I think WDW would be hit real hard.

We are DVC so they already have our money there - I have been working on DH for 3 years to sell with no luck yet. Since we get a kitchen/kitchenette we do the grocery stop for beverages, snacks & breakfast. In the past 2 years, we started eating off property more and more. Most of the Disney restaurants are merely decent and generally overpriced so it seems natural to find someplace better to eat anyway.

I'm not saying I don't mind paying the holiday surcharge (I do) -- but it's no different than pricing resort rooms higher at particular times of the year. You don't get anything extra in your room for that higher price either. It's just supply and demand -- they charge what the market will bear.

I just hope that some day they don't start pricing the tickets higher during those times as well.
