I've tried Google searching but haven't found anything that makes sense to me yet.

I understand Inside, Outside, Balcony, Suite, etc. No problem there.

Can anyone please explain what the numbers and letters mean? For example how does a 4B compare to a 7A?

I'm so lost!

The numbers show the type of room it is. 11 and 10 = inside staterooms. 9 and 8 = porthole. 7 = Navigator's Verandah on the classic ships and smaller/obstructed verandah on the Dream class. 6,5,4 = Verandah staterooms. The letters indicate location, with midship and upper decks being "better". This is generally speaking, of course - for instance, the 5e aft extended balconies are actually considered to be a preferred location by many.

I would highly recommend watching this video that Dreams Unlimited Travel did a couple of weeks ago. You will find it extremely helpful on this exact topic.
