Expiring points extended

I didn't understand the letter. What points can be carried forward? Only April and June use years? Would there not be other people that would/will have lost points?

There is additional information on the website. If your reservation is canceled because of the closure and you are past your banking deadline, you will be extended. So that would cover August (3/31), September (4/30) and October (5/31).

It does indicate though that normal banking rules should be followed. Do you think that is a subtle way to tell those with Sept and Oct UYs to think about summer plans carefully?

The only reason April and June UY are getting to extend those 2018 UY points 6 months is because they expired during the closure.

Really, the April points are getting 4 months at most because its not from resort opening, but expiration,

If resorts are not opened before Dec 1st, I am confident your 2018 points will get that 6 month extension as well,

But, if resorts do open, then you do have a chance to use them.

Lets be honest, even given the extension, many owners are going to have a difficult time using them unless they can go in the summer, as starting in fall, not much available.

I'm a new member but also have a December UY. We have 2018 banked points that we received when we purchased that we're using for our next reservation. My understanding is the 2018 points expire on Dec 1, 2020. Could be wrong as I'm still getting the hang of things though

Assuming a July 1 opening, a banked April ‘18 UY would have 3 full functional months to rebook (7/1-9/30). You would have 4 functional months to use banked Dec ‘18 UY (7/1-11/30).

Seems like a fair compromise to me, as owners we have to share the loss of capacity.

Oh dear, so I misread the DVC e-mail today and gave a renter incorrect info I think. He is also a DVC member and rented 200 points from me last December for a large family trip coming up this June (end of month) . I have a December use year and of those 200 points about 90 of them were banked from my 2018 use year.

If the resorts and parks are open in June they are still planning to go. However if not, it sounds like there will be no extension on my banked pts past their Nov 30 2020 expiration, is that correct? For some reason I read the communication to say that all expiring points would get extra time this year but after reading comments here it appears that’s not the case. So if he can’t reschedule/rebook his family for the 3 rooms they need before the end of November either he or I are out those points, even though the cancellation was due to a park closure, correct?

That is correct. They are only extending the expired 2018 UY points of April and June UY because they actually expire during a closure,

OK, got it. I can’t personally use points before next year so will have to go back and correct what I told him. Guess I was reading April/June as the dates of the cancelled reservations when I very quickly read the email, not dates of the use years. Even if his family could find a new time to go, I expect finding 3 rooms for the same week at the same resort might be a challenge this Fall!

I’m a little confused as to the people who thank Disney for doing something half way. I had a trip planned for March with points that expire in September. I’m set to lose 120 points from 2018 if they don’t offer my UY an extension. Why would some uy be given an extension but not others? People who had booked resorts got full refunds. People who have annual passes had them put on pause. People who bought passes had the expiry date extended. Dvc owners who have invested 1000s in Disney have no recourse to dues that Disney has had in pocket for 2 years? I’m sorry, but I’m not thinking that Disney was magnanimous for offering something to some member but not others. There will be people who are in a position to lose 1000s of $$$ in dues or have to convert them to RCI points, which is not why anyone bought the membership in the first place. Unprecedented events require unprecedented, common sense solutions. Perhaps park passes in an amount equivalent to dues paid. An opportunity to book moderate resorts at a reasonable point expenditure. Not only two uy being given an extension while everyone else struggles to understand the thought process behind it. So, not only do I stand to lose 120 points from 2018, but I can only borrow 50% of points from my next uy because some people got to keep their points for 6 months to a year? A company that just furloughed thousands of employees as it paid bonuses to execs, and I’m to be grateful they threw us any bone at all? Screw that noise. This is a naked attempt to assuage some complaints while pocketing money from people who will have little recourse. Not cool.

Unfortunately, those are all real factors that make your ability to use the points difficult or impossible.

But, the system in place is giving those banked 6 months from expiration. For April UY, assuming a June 1st opening, that is really 4 months,

Some of those owners will have the same issues you have in terms of not traveling. So, in essence, they may lose them as well,

Nothing they did would please all but has to find a way to deal with at least 10 weeks worth of points.

Overall, I think DVCM did what they are required to do....come up with a solution that helps both short term and long term for booking rooms,

You could still borrow the 50% and just do a split stay with a Universal hotel. The brand new surfside resorts look nice and are value priced if budget is an issue there. Obviously a split stay with 4 grandsons is far from optimal (might be a bit of an understatement there ) but it's at least something to consider.

That is a very good idea! It would be a bit of a pain moving the group, but still, in the grand scheme of things might be the perfect solution! We were already considering going next October 2021, rather than April, because the now 6 year old's birthday will fall during the Star Wars Half Marathon weekend next April, but he really really wanted to go for his birthday, because my other grandson, celebrated his 6th birthday last year, in January 2019, at WDW, so of course, now this one wants to celebrate his birthday there, too. Thank goodness the almost 8 year old doesn't care one way or another, and the 18 month old is too young to have a say! We also celebrated our now 14 year old bonus grandson's birthday last January at WDW. I'm now thinking it was a bad idea to start this trend, lol.

question though....I have about 30-something 2018 points that are set to expire so those will get extended 6 months right?? We already have reservations booked for July, September, and November. How hard/easy is it to get them to reallocate those points so that they use these 2018 points first??

Same boat with 46 points from 2018 which we'd like to apply to an August or October trip. We called DVC and was told that they will begin a 3-step process to restore April use year restoration first. June points are expected to be done by June 5. If you called after that date guest services will work to apply the 2018/2019 points to reservations coming up within that 6 month period.

THANK YOU !!! we have 45 points that were in a april ressie that were due to expire may 31 2020. I rebooked us for Sept and now want to allocate those 45 into this new reservation. The CM I got on the phone yesterday told me that it couldnt be done yet but didnt know when. Don't want any points getting mixed up!

There are always options, and sometimes situations like this present unexpected opportunities. I'm not suggesting it's optimal, but I've been surprised by having my hand forced and stepping outside the box before. Check out some of the youtube videos on surfside & dockside. They have junior suites with several beds for really surprising prices, and the pool looks pretty nice too. You could start there for a few days and then move to DVC after and end the trip in your happy place (and with a washer&dryer. ) We could certainly continue this in a more appropriate thread, but I'll just say I did a similar trip like this years ago when we didn't have enough points and it was an unexpectedly fun time.

I'd hope so - the window is closing fast for the April, especially if they're banked points and you're only getting 4 extra months. That said, since things are so fluid with plans, there is still a lot of studio availability thru the end of September, although that'll certainly change quickly.

An extra 6 months from when they expire, so must be used by Dec 1st, 2020
