We recently went on a 7 night Iberian Explorer cruise with Viking Ocean. DH and I are in our 30s without children. We are gold cruisers and had previously never cruised any other cruise line besides Disney. We value the quality and service.
We really wanted to go on a relaxing cruise in January. We are currently avoiding the Caribbean as we are thinking about having children and don't want to worry about the Zika virus. This ruled out Disney cruises for us for this time of year.
We did a lot of research and knew that there would be differences from Disney. We went into it trying to think about it as a different type of vacation. In the end we did still compare it to Disney so I thought I would share some of our thoughts as I couldn't find much on here prior to our trip.

Dining
The biggest difference we noticed was the dinning service was poor. The idea of not having an assigned time and table seemed nice but in reality resulted in a decently long wait to be seated in the main restaurant. The service in there was very slow. We also frequently requested things that never showed up or didn't get what were ordered. I also was given the menu for the night before one night and the server argued with me that I had the right one and then had to get a different server to fix it.
The dinning room was also very loud and not enjoyable as we couldn't hear each other across the table. Perhaps this was because of the included beer and wine and other passengers over doing it. But in any case it was definitely no worse then the children we have been seated near on Disney and possibly even worse.
Of note we actually met two other cruisers who are Disney Platinum cruisers also on their first viking ocean cruise and they also commented on the poor dinning service.
The other dinning options including an Italian restaurant which was good but required reservations, which were free, but we were only able to acquire one. The buffet, known as the world cafe, was probably a little better than Cabanas with some made to order items but we don't really like buffets and don't usually go to Cabanas. We did end of going to the buffet on Viking more because the dinning room service and experience was so poor. They did have one quick service place that was just ok, I much prefer the ones on Disney. Overall the food was good enough but I usually could only find one thing on the menu I would like were as on Disney I always have trouble deciding because multiple things look good.
A couple of nice features are an afternoon tea every day and an upgraded room service menu including hot breakfast items and entrees such as steak for lunch and dinner.

Room
The room overall I think we feel similarly about as Disney. The rooms are all veranda which is nice because recently we have not been getting those on Disney to save money. The beds weren't quite as comfortable but we still slept fine. There is a refrigerator which comes stocked with soft drinks. Our room category replaced them daily and high room categories actually include beer and wine which is replaced daily as well. The bathroom was very nice. Much bigger with heated floor and bigger shower. I like the split bathrooms on Disney but didn't miss it. The room service was very good, comparable to Disney. The TV had similar features, but as expected less Disney and more other movies both new and old. The one think we did miss was some of the navigation features channel such as the speech and distance.
Wifi was included and free. We have mixed feelings about this. One on hand it was nice to have but on another hand one thing we like about cruising is feeling disconnected.

Spa/Pool
We did both get a massage at the spa which was comparable to when we have on Disney. The overall spa experience was very nice though with multiple hot and cool tubs and showers with heated loungers where you could go any time. The two pools on deck we checked out once. It is nice that the one has a roof that can be pulled over when it is cold to still be usable.

Entertainment
There was no casino like on Disney which we like.
There were daily port talks in person and replayed on demand on your TV. I like this idea a lot but they were poorly done.
Entertainment overall was very poor. We knew it wasn't going to be like Disney and were focusing more on relaxing this vacation but I didn't realize how much I actually do an activity here or there on Disney and value that.

Port Excursions
There is one port excursion in every stop included and 2-3 optional paid excursions. We took 3 of the free excursions and did one port on our own. The excursions were fine with usually a bus tour and small walking tour. I did like having that option. It would be nice to have more optional paid exertions a well though. One nice thing it there is plenty of bottled water handed out when getting off the boat for excursions without an additional cost. Interesting on the excursions some of the elderly we were with were just like having kids with needing breaks and restrooms and having to wait for this. The time in port was short, usually only half a day which wasn't ideal. Also the port choices were a bit odd compared to other cities we sailed by.

Guest Services
Guest services had poor service. We stopped there a couple of times but the biggest was about our transfers on disembarkment. We received the wrong information in our room and went to guest services three times and called once before getting it sorted out, no one followed up.
Transfers
The other disappointment was we booked a transfer to the airport on disembarkment and it was chaos on the pier and not organized by viking well. We finally got to the airport but it is good we had plenty of time to spare.

Overall we enjoyed our vacation and it met most of our expectations as we had done our research and knew it wouldn't be like Disney. I'm not sure if we will go on a Viking cruise again. We don't have any planned. We do have Disney cruises planned though!

I appreciate the comparison. We have done many Disney cruises and one Viking river cruise and planning a Viking ocean cruise next year. Hoping we have a better experience.

Thanks for sharing your experiences! I have been thinking about trying out Viking cruises. Your review and comparison are very helpful!

:thanks:

Thanks for sharing! I have heard that their River cruises have good service, so perhaps they haven’t figured out their ocean strategy yet.

Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts. I've been looking at Viking online because they have much better itineraries than Disney, but I'm not sure about switching lines. This info is really helpful. Thanks for all the details and explanations. :)

I've done many Disney and Viking Ocean (and river) and I do not have the same opinion

you are certainly entitled to your opinion but I strongly disagree

I could dissect each of your points but I think I see something: DH and I are in our 30s

I'll be the first to admit that VO's target group (and this applies to the river too) is NOT 30's!!!!!!!

probably nearer 60's!!! And the entertainment and food service is adjusted accordingly.

Disney stage shows at 8 NOT ..... acoustic guitar in the lounge during cocktail hour, yes

slow to be seated ... worst time IME was 5 minutes

no charge for special restaurants btw ....

we sailed Disney back in the early years when the kids were small. I'll still say that if you want to sail with kids, Disney is the way to go. PAST KIDS? OMG why? For the same money you can get so much more ADULT stuff ..... There are many adults who can't get past DISNEY and I appreciate this (have 'em in my family) but OMG ... would you go eat dinner in Disney rather than a good rest' in town????

cruise b4 kids: Windstar
cruise with kids: Disney
cruise post kids: viking ocean/river

If there were a way to get out of Disney, eat, and come back in a reasonable amount of time, then I see your point.

Also valid is the point about average age group. My parents are in their early 70s and Viking/Crystal cruises are pretty much in heir wheelhouse. They do the generational cruises with us on the “family” ships of the world because they want to be with us and the grandkids.

With that said, you never know until you try, and at least OP now knows that Viking is a “maybe not right now” cruise line for them.

Interesting review. We are DCL Platinum and have also done two Viking River Cruises plus one Viking Ocean Cruise (with another scheduled in a couple of months. We are also Diamond on RCL. We are in our 70's. All this for background.

We don't agree on many of the points the OP made, but that's why everybody needs to try things for themselves. I will say that we haven't experienced an overly loud restaurant and our service was always top notch. I'd agree with the comments about entertainment though. Being older we are happy enough to sit in a lounge with a beverage chatting with people so its not a huge thing for us.

I thought the included port tours were pretty good and its nice to have a few more (paid) options. However, we've fallen into the habit of ignoring most ship's tours (on any line) and just getting a driver locally. We have them show us what they think are the best parts of their home town. That also gives us the flexibility to shop longer (or not at all), stop for bathroom breaks when we need it, and we don't have to wait for everybody to reboard the bus after each stop.

I was impressed with the staterooms on the Viking ships (river & ocean) in terms of decor and layout. The heated floors in the bathroom are quite a nice touch!.

Again, just our opinion. Not saying that the OP is wrong.

We are in our 70's and have done 8 DCL cruises, three without kids/gkids...love them all. (Going on another one in two months). Only experience we had with Viking was when we did the Baltic Capitals DCL cruise and we docked at Tallinn, Estonia. The Viking Star was docked next to us (this was within a month or two after Viking launched their ocean ships. After our excursion we visited some shops by the dock and I happened to strike up a conversation with a woman who was a passenger on the Star. She said the engine died and she had been in port for three days deciding whether to take up Viking's offers of sending her home, flying her to the third port on their itinerary or sticking with the ship until it was repaired. She was not happy...thank goodness the ship conked out in port and not at sea. This might have been an inaugural cruise (which we did with the Fantasy), so kinks needed to be worked out.
This report does not address the initial issues of day-to-day life on their ships, just an aside. Cruise on...

We have done 15 and 16 DCL cruises, respectively, along with one Viking River cruise. We have another river cruise and a Baltics cruise booked with Viking. Our river cruise experience was first rate. Food was better than the DCL MDRs, service was as good or better. The smaller number of passengers on the river cruise meant that we ended up with the same serving team each night as we sat in the same area of the dining room, so we had an experience similar to DCL’s rotational dining in terms of getting to know the servers and the servers getting to know us. Viking did as well or better managing DW’s dietary restrictions (gluten free) as we have experienced on DCL. We’ll see how the ocean cruise experience compares in that regard. As to demographic, we are also in the plus-70 age group, so right in the target audience for Viking. The excursions and entertainment work for us in that regard.

Thank you for the information. We receive the Viking information in the mail quite often and have wondered how the two cruise lines compare. We may try a river cruise in the future but honestly enjoy the consistent service we have received over the years with DCL.

We did the Viking Ocean Homelands cruise. I'm sorry OP but we don't agree. We are DCL Platinum. Dining was spectacular with Viking. It was wonderful not having to worry about time. All restaurants including the buffet were excellent. We scored several extra reservations at the specialty restaurants. Our favorite restaurant was the Chef's Table which is equal to DCL Remy. We ate there 3 times. Extremely good. Love that they are free. We had OUTSTANDING service in all restaurants including the buffet.

We MUCH prefer the room on Viking. We were in a DV4. The bathroom is extremely large with great areas for storage. The heated floors are beyond wonderful. The HUGE shower is 10 times better than any shower we've had on any cruise line. I thought that we would miss the split bathroom but we didn't. This size of the bathroom quickly made me realize how wonderful it is on Viking.

One of the best things is that the rooms are so quiet. I never heard a neighbor. Never heard anyone running up and down the hallway at all hours of the day and night. Never heard slamming of the stateroom doors. Quiet.

Included excursions are really nice. We were on for 15 days. We did a little free, a couple of paid and a few on our own. I do a lot of research so I already knew before booking excursions what we needed and got it all.

Customer service was just as good as DCL. We always (we've done river cruises as well) get Viking's transfers and air and have never had any issues. They've always treated us with utmost respect. All excursions and transfers have gone by without any hiccups. We do pre and post cruise extensions and they are handled well and professionally. On our first river cruise they actually stayed with us to assist anyone having problems checking in at the kiosks at the airport. Nice touch.

Someone upthread talked about issues with the Star. What was mentioned was definitely on the maiden voyage. We were on the Star and no problems. Viking knows what they are doing now. They were new to Ocean cruising with the Star. They now have several cruise ships and more in the making. They can't be all that bad if they are filling all their ships.

I love that Viking treats all guests as equal once onboard even with the guests with suites. I don't like that Disney has gone back to the days of Titanic.

Just today we were looking for our next Viking Ocean cruise. I would cruise Disney again if my family wanted to go but if it's just my husband and myself, Viking wins by a long shot and without hesitation.

To clarify ... if in Orlando and not in WDW and looking for a good or great dinner is a Disney venue your first choice destination? You can come for just dinner you know .. people do that. I live here and it isn't for me .... ignoring the access and parking issues there are only a couple of venues where I'd call the food good much less great.

From my first WDW visit back in 1978 we USUALLY would leave in mid afternoon for a nap & to find a good stress-less dinner and then return for late night activity.

* concur that many of the main street cruise lines including DCL are drifting back towards 'class' based cruising and I'm not a fan

* to be honest: while VO may treat folks on board the same ... there are certain perks in the 'pre' process that upset folks like how many days out one can book ressie for optional dining or excursions that still upset some folks but once on board the experience is much more 'level'.

Our last VO was from England Greenwich, up Scotland islands then up and down Norway coast to Bergen Norway and I'd do it again in a heat beat.

I don't mind that perk and fully understand it. I have read that some get a bit upset.

Similar to the DCL Castaway Club levels getting to make their on board reservations earlier than others.
