Reflections of Everest by Brett Kiger, on Flickr

Here's the view I'm talking about. DH took it on our trip last May, and I know he's going to want to try this same shot at night, so I'll be there, anyway.

Wow, that's gorgeous! I've taken pictures of EE from that spot but they're nowhere nearly that beautiful.

I'm up for a meet, too. I'll be with my teammate so it will all depend on our respective fatigue.

Amazing, thanks for that information - good to know about the wave times.

I agree that 11 just might be a wee bit on the early side. I know someone else had mentioned not staying much after though so I was worried about that. However if you finished in that amount of time then we should DEFINITELY take that into consideration and plan for it to be a bit later than 11.
I'm having a lapse in memory right now - what time are the awards again?? 11:20 is good for me though.

I just wish they could give us some for sure answers. It would make it so much easier for people like me who are obsessive planners!! lol I mean - how many waves will there be so we can figure out an aprox. time the last person would finish :confused3 and how exactly are they organizing heats so people can know that sort of thing.

Oh well, in the meantime we can shoot for 11:20ish type of thing and I'm fine on either location except that I don't have a clue where Flametree bbque is! ROFL
I will be there before the race though so wherever we choose to meet i will have it scoped out ahead of time :thumbsup2

I thought I remembered that Restaurantosaurus was the only eating place that would be open?

Flame Tree isn't open, but we've been able to go back there when it hasn't been open. I'm just not sure if they will have that area closed off. Kinda bummed that FT isnt going to be open -it's our favorite AK cs!

I'm one of those who said I'd be leaving fairly early. ;) My DD is 9 (almost 10!) but this will be a late night for her. Oh, who am I kidding. It's waaay past my bedtime!! :lmao: Anyway, with the 9:30 start, 11:15ish sounds like a pretty good time to meet up! I looked over the results of years past, and overall finishing times were about in the 1 hour - 1 1/2 hour time frame, including the scavenger hunt. If they're doing the scavenger hunt differently this year, those overall finishing times may be much less. Who knows?!! But with an 11:15ish time to meet up, hopefully that should allow slower walkers to finish and not rush, and those who are faster can play a bit before meeting? Thoughts? :confused3 I think even I could probably last until 11:15. :)

So far, the Bridge by Nemo and Flame Tree's hidden picnic spot have been mentioned. Either sounds good for a nice background! I'm not sure if they might rope off FT though, since it won't be open? So maybe that bridge would be a better idea?? Anyone experience FT to be roped off in races past?

I'm not sure if this place would be too remote (or even accessible), but the back porch/seating area at Flametree BBQ has a BEAUTIFUL view of EE. And at night, I'm sure it would be all lit up at night and make a great picture spot.
That would be a good spot! I can't see it being roped off because it's on that main artery between Discovery Island, Dinoland and Asia.

Me too, with my DS who'll be ten the week after EEC. Maybe. It's tough to guess with him... he made it to midnight at our last MNSSHP, but was seriously a vegetable by the time we left, lol! I'm not sure whether a run will invigorate and waken him, or shut him down and I'll be trying to carry someone only slightly smaller than I am to the bus. ;)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Speaking of kids, sleepiness and planning... I'm completely torn about how to best equip mine for staying up long past his bedtime. He's an early riser by nature and it's very rare that he sleeps past 8am; the few times it's happened were after multiple early mornings and late nights combined with daily swims at WDW. Read; he was toast and in dire need of catch-up sleep. I could try wearing him out in the days prior in hopes of him sleeping in on race day... but if it fails, we're in deep doo-doo! I'm leaning toward the marathon rule of getting adequate sleep the night before the night before, planning nothing the morning of the race, and playing it by ear. If he sleeps in, great. If not, I'll enforce an attempted nap (yeah, that doesn't happen much, either), the afternoon of race day.
I still can't decide where to eat lunch that day. I want that to be our big meal of the day, but nothing too heavy, y'know? Frankly, I'm leaning toward going off-site to Subway. Dinner will be tummy-friendly, carb-y fare from Mara.
Beyond that, I think we're ready! Got us some crazy BondiBands to wear as Team Base Camp Yeti Bait:
For the record, I had nothing to do with picking that awful pattern; that's all my child. :rotfl: It'll go nicely with our lime green tops. :rolleyes:
We have a local 5K tomorrow morning. Wish us luck!
Hmmm, I haven't even thought of what to eat that day.....argh!
What to eat and when is confusing me, too! Since this is our first run, I don't know what the recommendations are for a night race. DH is saying that we are going to take it easy during the day, but I just know we will end up wearing ourselves out. We don't drink caffeine, but I'm thinking that we might need a bit of a boost to make sure we don't get too tired.
1AM doesn't seem too late, but I don't know how tired we will be after we finish.
This will definitely be a good gauge for how we need to do things before the ToT in September!
For those who have done this before, what is your daily schedule like, including meals?
I thought about that, but wasn't sure if that area would be open....thoughts?
Our goal is going to be just to finish. I have no idea how long it will take us. It sounds like we're not going to be able to get a group shot with everyone, so I think we should pick a place and schedule meetups every 1/2 hour or so. That way we can meet up without having to keep little ones up too late or feel like we are missing out if we can't finish by 11.
Jeff Galloway's goals for first race: 1) Finish 2) Finish in the upright position 3) Want to do it again.
These are our goals!
I have not commented on the meet up because I don't know what my sister will want to do or how the timing will work out. We will be on the slow end. If we are near at the right time, we may pop in.
I am a night hawk - so the late time won't bother me. :) I normally run around 9:00/10:00 pm.
We are having a later breakfast at Tusker House that morning, but I don't know what we will do before the race.
Were you registered as a single runner and started in Wave 5? My sister and I are just registered as singles right now, but are wondering if we should form a team to make sure we start together at least. I thought all the singles started in the first Wave, but not sure if that is right or not.
No, I was registered as a team with my DH. However, we signed up about 7 weeks prior to the race, so I figured we were so far in the back because of that.
I'm pretty sure single runners are in the first Wave, but don't hold me to that...
Okay, quick question because I am at a loss. :laughing:
My mother is running solo in the EE5K, and she's having a bit of trouble, and I figured I'd ask here in case anyone else has had this problem.
She pretty much lives in flip-flops; everywhere she goes she wears them (we live on the beach, so it's reasonable that she does.) In Januray, she bought really nice running shoes (had her foot tested to know which ones to buy and everything) and for awhile she was doing fine. She also has two other pair of regular shoes that she uses when she absolutely has to.
Well, here in the past few weeks, everytime she has trained in all 3 different shoes, the ball of her feet and her toes start to really hurt. She used to be able to do 3.2 miles in them, but now she can barely do a mile. She said if she could run the race in flip-flops, she'd be great.:lmao:
I'm not sure what to tell her to do. She keeps trying to use the shoes to get her foot conditioned, but nothing is changing, and with the race so near, she's beginning to worry she won't be able to finish.
Has anyone else had this issue before? I don't know what to tell her to do, because I have never encountered something like this before.:confused3
What are BondiBands?
Bondiband I don't need them for keeping my hair back, but I need something to deal with sweat and these ROCK! :thumbsup2
Good luck on your 5K!!
Thanks! :goodvibes
For those who have done this before, what is your daily schedule like, including meals?
I have no experience with night racing, but I have lots of nighttime ballet performances under my belt - that's rather like running a half-marathon at bedtime so I'm using the same approach for running! I kept cardio to a minimum that day; stretching and the equivalent of some walking was fine, but not too much time on my feet. At WDW, we may see a movie and take in some pool time. For eating, I always ate a sensible breakfast and decent lunch, nothing too high in fiber, some carbs and some lean protein. Dinner was lighter and mostly carbs - noodle soup was always a standard. After the performance came my biggest meal with carbs and a good amount of protein. For EEC, we'll do dinner around 6 and bring a handful of Clif Shot Bloks for a little pre-race energy boost.
Caveat: I'm not a medical professional. ;) I mostly live in flips, too, and though I haven't had that exact issue, I've had some issues, so I'll take a stab at it. Living in flips means much stronger and more flexible feet and ankles than the average bear. This is good, but not typically what running shoes are designed for. For me, an overly stabilized shoe forces my feet/ankles out of their natural movements, causing issues in my arches, ankles, instep and calves. I do better in a less structured shoe that lets my already strong feet do what they're used to doing. It could be that there's a "bubble" of cushioning/support in the forefront or mid-foot of her shoes that's meant to provide stability and shock absorption, but for her causes her foot to move out of its natural motion. FYI, I had to try 5 different shoes before finding the ones I love now... my experience has been that gait analysis, etc. can be helpful, but for some of us, we just need to try a variety of options until the "right" one shows up.
Do you know which shoes she's in now?
I agree with PrincessV - it sounds like she needs minamalistic shoes like my DD who loves to run on the treadmill barefoot. What type of shoe was she fitted for?? I find it odd that they would have fitted her wrong but it is possible. I had a hard time figuring it out for me b/c the arch of my foot says I should be wearing one type but the way my foot hits the ground (wear and tear on the bottom of old shoes shows me this) says I should be another type so I can see how someone could improperly select a shoe style.
OH - I think the idea of a meet up time and then a half hour later again is a GREAT idea. Who knows - I might make it to both :) LOL
Night races can be tricky. I did the Wine and Dine Half last fall and struggled with what to eat. I have a sensitive tummy when running, so I basically run on empty all the time - and run in the mornings. Obviously, running on empty is near impossible for a night race or I'd be starving all day long! For the wine and Dine, I ate a waffle and oatmeal for breakfast, sandwich for lunch, soup and and apple for dinner. And chugged down water all day long! I still had tummy problems, but that's just a personal issue for me. Luckily, that only happens to me when I get into high mileage, like over 7 or 8. So for me, the fact that this EE race is only 3 miles is not an issue. (My tummy was very upset with me after that Wine and Dine - never again!!)
That said, I still suggest simple meals. My DD and I will be lunching at Sci-Fi for her birthday lunch (burger and cake.... not exactly ideal though) and will probably be eating Sweet and Sour chicken at Epcot for and early dinner that afternoon, or just simple snacks around Epcot.
If you're really unsure about what to eat, test it out at home first! It was suggested to do so before the Wine and Dine and I failed significantly on that front. So now I would highly suggest it! Do a practice night run and see how it goes. If you can, plan your simple meals during the day, and jog an easy 2 or 3 miles (or whatever you can) around 9pm. See how your body likes it. If it works - great! If not, try again. That way you know and you won't be surprised.
Boy, I'm glad you posted that today - I really needed that! My first 5K is tonight at 7 so I'm testing out the whole 'night run' thing. What I'm planning is to eat a bagel with peanut butter and banana around 2 or 3 and that will be it until after the race, which starts at 7.
Disney_runner - I know what you mean about the upset tummy. Mine gets upset with me all the time when I run. I really gotta figure out the timing with that before I try the Princess Half next February or else that will be a LOOONNGGG 13.1 miles!
I just noticed that they changed some of the wording on the race website regarding waivers...it now says they will be available 2 weeks before the race. It said one month just a few days ago when I emailed to ask about it...I wonder why they are now waiting until that close to the race to make those available?
hmmm, ya, that's interesting. I hope they DO get them all sent the full 2 weeks before then so I can have mine ready. We leave 9 days before the race.
I wonder why nobody else has gotten their emails yet???? That's strange that only one has recieved it and that's it.
Good Luck at the race debbieandroo!
