Expect a Great Movie Ride Update Announcement Soon

When the time comes for the internal updates a couple years down the line, I just hope making it more "relevant" doesn't mean replacing James Cagney and John Wayne with Vince Vaughn and Seth Rogen. Let's hope TCM keeps the concept of "classic" movies - one that left the final montage years ago. (I mean, seriously, "Broadcast News" and "Sister Act"?)

What I'm really looking forward to at the Studios is the announcement about the new location for the Hat, since it will apparently be in a part of the park that doesn't even exist yet.

Did I miss something? Have they said they are relocating the hat?:confused3

90% of people will disagree with this, but personally I would like it to be more relevant for those of us who are in our 20's. The ride just seems incredibly dated and uninteresting to me. I get it's all classic, but it just seems too old, IMO.

This perspective fascinates me. I first went on the ride when I was 17 and the movies (mostly) were incredibly dated. And I LOVED it.

Old Hollywood is kind of the point. It helped that in my Television Production class, our teacher exposed us to many classics for historical perspective of the format. So there is value in all that even if you may not see it.

My kids love old movies and my oldest is only 14.

A few more details.........

....TCM will work with Disney Imagineers to give a makeover to the ride's film-montage finale. It also will install a classic-movie-themed scene in which visitors can have photos taken. Boarding the ride, visitors will see digital displays of movie posters. TCM host Robert Osborne will appear in a pre-ride video.

Osborne will also provide audio for the ride, including more in-depth explanations of the film genres it explores...
....The montage will feature up to 200 high-definition clips from a broad range of movies, about half of them ones not already represented, said Pola Changnon, TCM's creative director. The montage is still in production. Examples of what it could feature, Changnon said, include segments such as dance sequences from the Fred Astaire-Ginger Rogers classic "Swing Time" juxtaposed with "Saturday Night Fever."....

I'm in my 20s & would far prefer the ride to feature timeless films over flash in the pan films that might be "relevant" for about three years. Big difference between "classic" and "old," IMO.

While I'm excited about this, this means there will be yet another ride in DHS undergoing a refurb in the near future. This leaves a grand total of 1 ride at DHS for the under 40' crowd. Just close the park and do a major overhaul that can be completed in 1-2 years instead of dragging this out over half a decade or more.

As far as I know, the only public announcement is that it is leaving its current location. But internally, the plans are to move it as part of a significant reworking of the park, which might include a relocation of the park entrance itself. This stuff isn't finalized yet, so no announcement.

Haven't seen any mention of moving it but of course it's possible .... but the permit filed states "Demolition" which would imply not. In my mind, it's big, it's centrally located, it will be difficult to screen ......... so let's get it down fast.

For what it's worth, regarding permits of this type, "demolition" applies to anything that will be taken down, regardless of whether or not they intend for it to be moved or destroyed. So, the permit doesn't mean that they aren't going to move it to the entrance of Fantasmic or All Star Movies. Then again, it also doesn't mean that they are.

It's all a matter of opinion as far as this goes. All I was doing was sharing that the only word used on the permit was demolition. Demolition means to tear down by wrecking or destroying. Demolition is the opposite of deconstruction which would be dismantling it. Over the years demolition is a word used rarely on their permits.

I did say it was possible they are moving it. Anything is possible at Disney. But so far there has been no indication that the hat will be preserved and moved that I have seen.

True. But many of those clips were "relevant" for someone in their 20's when MGM opened...and are kinda laughable, now.

They really should mandate the clips get updated at least every 5 years

"Osborne will also provide audio for the ride, including more in-depth explanations of the film genres it explores..."

So, no more live cast members along for the ride? :confused3

That's what separates classic movies from "old" movies - 'Casablanca' and 'Wizard of Oz' are just as relevant now as they were when the park opened. 'Sister Act' and 'Broadcast News', not so much.

While I'm thrilled this wonderful ride will be getting the attention it deserves it is alarming that it will mean that another attraction will be closed at DHS.

Hmmm...now if there are no CMs narrating, then that is something I will NOT be on board for. For me, the CMs MAKE GMR. I don't understand how you can take the CMs out without completely gutting the ride and beginning again? Taking CMs out ruins the whole spirit of the ride.

But, I can see why they might want to do it. A while back, the CMs and Disney had an issue of sorts, because (I think) the performing CMs were saying that they were supposed to be considered Union actors, like the dancers and characters. The whole actors union is rather tricky in the parks. People like the EPCOT performers, Streetsmopher performers, dancers and characters etc are sometimes in the actors union, or even pressured into being union actors. Likewise, since the CMs in GMR spiel as TG and perform as the gangster and cowboy/girl, there was talk of them going union or being "forced" into union. That means a pay increase for them, and expense to Disney. I think is was all settled out, but I can sort of see that Disney might want to get rid of the whole thing outright. Which would be a total shame because again, the ride really depends on the CMs there!

(My dear friend was in the Hunchback of Notre Dame show as a dancer, as well as friends with Buzz Lightyear and said that there was a lot of pressure to be union. She didn't for personal reasons, but then she didn't get good parts or hours. She eventually left Disney.)

I'm watching for confirmation that this is really the case. If so, I agree the ride would be completely different, and we also would not bother with it.
