Expect a Great Movie Ride Update Announcement Soon

To me this is the worst ride on property. Its just terrible. Most of the people who go on this ride have NO CLUE about any of these movies and they just don't care. Don't bother rehabbing - just replace with a better more relevant option

As a former GMR'er, I love this! TCM is a great fit, and can provide Disney with lots of new movies!

This ride is about GREAT movies, not modern or popular ones (although they can be greats too). Great as in ground-breaking, transformed films or created new genres of film. Great as in selected for preservation movies. And the Great Movie Ride can introduce a whole new generation of people to these amazing works of cinema masterpieces. So what if you don't know the movie? GMR will give you the name and now you can watch this amazing movie on TCM.

(Please note: while I always hated going through Alien, it is a groundbreaking movie and deserves to be there.)

Great news! I have never liked the Alien sequence. Most of the GMR experience needs to be replaced with new scenes.

Great news! - Yes. Updating attractions can be exhilarating for old fans and bring in new fans.

Alien Sequence - I recall it being far more scary with the Alien head coming down closer to the vehicle. Disney Imagineers do sometimes push a bit too far to 'the dark side' for a family park(s), imho.

Replacing current scenes - now heres a conversation for debate. The Wizard of Oz has great movie significance (Technicolor), so too do many of the others inside the Great Movie Ride and I hope that remains the focus - a history of movies....that extends into the current era.

Whatever plans Disney has for Hollywood Studios, the initial announcement is seemingly appropriate in front of the Sorcerer's Hat & Movie Theater. While I enjoy the Hat (I am a Fantasia fan), it has always distracted from the beauty of the Chinese Theater that can and should be the visual centerpiece of a movie-themed Park. And I have read on other posts that the Hat is in the way of a better situated stage and/or space for a nighttime light display (fireworks?).

Of course, we are all also anticipating an announcement for the phase that will be a makeover to the Street of America and the vicinity that includes the Backlot.

Maybe one big announcement in Hollywood Studios with completion date in 2018-9 (after AvatarLand)??????

I look forward to reading the announcement. If true, this is good news. As much as I love this ride for its homage to classic movies over the decades, I would love to see it freshened up. TCM seems like a really good fit as a sponsor.

I agree! It looks like a promising improvement!

I agree. An update makes sense as there have been some popular movies in recent years. I don't think my DD knew one of them. But I think this kind of ride is very appropriate for HS...it is Hollywood after all so having something over the movies is a must.
The script with the shooting was a bit cheesy...but that's just my opinion. I know they were just trying to have fun with it and 'put a movie type ride' in the attraction itself.

Great news! :cool1:

But wait..... I thought I hated change. I'm SO confused. ;)

If I'm being perfectly honest, change can me me nervous... especially if change is coming to something I love such as Great Movie Ride. I love that ride and it has been my favorite ever since I was a little girl. However, this change has me rather excited and hopeful. First, it reassures me that the ride isn't going anywhere. That's big. With all of the changes coming to DHS, I had heard a rumor that all of the old Hollywood stuff was going to be going away. This almost completely confirms that is wrong because why would they spend money to revamp a ride "old Hollywood" and then ditch everything else in the park including the ride they just revamped? Second, it sounds like they will maintain the integrity of the ride. With TCM sponsoring, it won't be (to paraphrase Sam the Eagle) a salute to all movies but mostly Frozen. Maybe they will redo it the Alien scene. The movie was good enough and everything, but I'm not sure it has the staying power of other classics that are featured (Singin' in the Rain, Mary Poppins, Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Wizard of Oz) and it was the scariest part for children. With the park having so few rides without height requirements, I would think making this one slightly less scary for the kids might be a good idea. I just hope that they don't get rid of the movie artifacts in the queue. I love that.

Much as I love the ride I would like to see it updated.
Overall I think the changes to DHS are long over due as the other parks have all had biggish changes made.
Be interested to see what happens

I just saw this part in the article:
In the other part of the deal, another Disney division, Walt Disney Studios, will provide TCM with vintage movies, cartoons, documentaries and episodes of TV series like “Disneyland” and “Walt Disney’s Wonderful World of Color” for a periodic programming block on the channel under the banner of “Treasures From the Disney Vault.”
Is it just me or is this a double win for Disney fans? We get a ride updated and more classic Disney programming on TCM. Sounds good to me!:happytv:

How neat would it be for us old timers if TCM would show things like the Davy Crockett episodes that appeared on the Sunday night Disneyland shows in the 50's.

I think it would be great if someone could create a passable fake announcement of a GMR/Frozen tie in...something like "Princess Elsa takes you on a tour of the movies!"

The disboards implosion would be epic!

Wouldn't even have to be that extreme, just say that the Wizard of Oz scene in the GMR will be replaced by a Frozen scene. People on here would go through the roof.

Yeah, first "phase" is to revamp the pre and post-show, but in the long term (we're talking about either toward the very end or after the DHS revamp), we may possibly seen an updated (or at least tweaked) scene maybe.

Completely agree. There is no point in this big an effort and leave the ride the same with so many scenes of little interest to guests. It makes sense to do what you can now that are not disruptive, leave more for later.

Two things to note:
- On 10/9/14 a permit was filed for "Great Movie Ride Show Set Install."
- There are many events and special parties held within the ride in multiple rooms (gangster, cowboy, munchkinland). Prior to this announcement, the bookings went no farther than 2016. No bookings could have meant the potential end of the attraction or possibly a closure for renovation of the attraction. The partnership is a very positive game changer.

I wonder when they'd work on this? That park is barebones as it is and closing another major attraction seems unreasonable.

I think it will be great! I love the GMR now and will love an updated version. HOWEVER, I agree with this post 100%. Way too many *improvements* going on at once already in a bare bones park.
