This isn't a surprise to anyone in the gymnastics world because all the complaints regarding him from both Romanian and American gymnasts have been pretty consistent. I wish NBC would stop propping him up now. For some reason, I doubt it though.

I'm not a fan of his. I have no idea if these allegations are true but you don't have to physically beat them to be abusive, you can do just as much, if not more damage with just words. Unfortunately, I know this from my own past mental abuse by a coach growing up for over 10+ years. She did damage to my self esteem that took me literally years to recover from, it still creeps up on me from time to time. Just two years ago I forgave her with the help from God but I can never forget, I'm just making sure it doesn't happen to my own kids.

I'm sorry I don't believe her story at all

Other gymnasts have come forward with the same information: Melita Ruhn tried to run away from the abuse on more than one ocassion, Daniela Silivas and Andrea Dobre were excited when Bela defected because they thought that would be the end to the beatings (the beatings did stop when Goreac took over), Nadia hid in a bathroom stall for three days to avoid a beating, and US gymnast Dominique Moceanu came out this summer with her abuse.
There are many other gymnasts who have hinted at abuse at the hands of the Karolyis, but are to afraid to speak out.

The Karolyis coached at a time of the Ceausescu regime. They were expected to produce more Nadias at any cost. When the Karolyis defected, their abuse became mental abuse, pitting gymnast against gymnast, and calling the gymnasts names.

The claims have been out there for a long time. It is only now that more gymnasts are coming out with facts.

I don't know if I beleive the allegations or not, but one thing that came to mind was this is from a gymnast who is in her 40's right? So, she probbaly trained in the 60's and 70's and there really was nothing identified as "child abuse" like we identify it today. So, yeah, he may have been abusive, but that was likely the norm, especially in Romania, or Transylvannia or where ever they lived. Is he being accused of being an abuser now??? I try not to judge people who made bad choices in the past, as long as they have changed.

Ecatarina Szabo and Rodica Duncan can be added to this list of gymnasts claiming abuse. Poszar said he didn't report it because of Karolyi's government connections.

Why or why not? She had credible back up from Geza Pozsar who defected with the Karolyis and worked closely with them for a very long time.

From your article

Pozsar is now a gymnastics coach and runs his own gymnasium in Sacramento, where Kollar has worked for 15 years. He's hadn't previous spoken out about the Karolyis.

Not so credible IMO since they have worked together for 15 years.

Melitas story about running away from the "abuse"

Running Away from Deva

In 1977. when she was 12 years old, Melita tried to run away from Deva as she recalls as her friend from Deva Angelica Iacob sits alongside. “I was upset because Karoly scolded me during training. I took a small bag and ran away from the training center. I thought about hitch-hiking and getting one of the trucks to take me home to Sibiu, “ said Melita. Next to her, Angelica Iacob confirms the story. “I found her at an intersection. No car had taken her.” During training, Angelica would bring Melita all sorts of goodies they weren’t allowed to eat. “I never forgot how good the pancakes, French fries and crème brulee we weren’t allowed to eat tasted,” added Melita.

and US gymnast Dominique Moceanu came out this summer with her abuse.

Domoniques story

Former U.S. Olympian Dominique Moceanu, who at 14 was part of the 1996 gold-medal team, said Tuesday night that USA Gymnastics team coordinator Martha Karolyi once grabbed her by the neck and slammed her face into a phone, and that former coach Bela Karolyi twice berated her about her weight in front of national teammates.

Moceanu, in a telephone interview with The Times, expanded on comments she made on an “HBO Real Sports” report that first aired Tuesday night in which she called for the Karolyis to be removed from their positions with the national team.

But other gymnasts who have been coached by the Karolyis or who were on the 1996 team with Moceanu said they hadn’t seen the abuse Moceanu said she suffered.

So twice Bela berated her...

It's sad. I don't know what to believe, the truth is there somewhere. I can say though that there are too many people claiming the same thing, so you have to wonder if to some extent it is true.

I can say though that this behavior is not the norm, I have to believe that. My dd is a competitive gymnast and I don't see it around our neck of the woods. These stories do give gymnastics a bad rap, but it is not like that for the most part, I think this is just one extreme where the common denominator is the Karolyi's.

They have not worked together for 15 years - Pozar has lived in the US for 15 years.

Pozar was the choreographer when Bela was the Romanian coach. They worked together at Deva, the National Training Center. Bela, Barta, and Pozar defected together and came to the US. The Karolyis moved to Texas, asking Pozar to follow them. He declined and stayed in California, where he opened his own gym.

While in Romania, Pozar could not speak out against the Karolyis because of the political ties the Karolyis had with the government. Even when they defected, Pozar still could not speak out because of the power the Karolyis have with US Gymnastics.

Domoniques story

So twice Bela berated her...

Do you think it's OK for anyone to berate a teenager about her weight. Moceanu has also said that Marta Karolyi had grabbed her by the neck and led her into her office and shoved a phone in front of her face to call her parents. The person that fervently defends the Karolyi's is Kim Zmeskel and my guess is she is still afraid of them. Zmeskel currently coaches a national team member so her "destiny" is still in the hands of the Karolyi's.

Here is an intervier done by the Romanian ProSport news from 2002. The gymnast is Rodica Dunca:

Asked by the journalist whether Karolyi's methods were tough, Dunca answered, "I think 'tough' isn't the right word when you're lucky if you escape with merely a beating. Some days we were beaten until the blood streamed out of our noses. Hunger was our eternal enemy."

And then she tells shocking stories, with revelations about girls fleeing from training camps and Securitate officials arresting 13- and 14-year-old girls in stations, forcing them to go back to the "prison" in Deva. About the threats they received on their return to Deva: That if they ever tried to escape again, their parents would suffer for it. We hear how Nadia Comaneci hid in an unused toilet for three days because she was so afraid of her coach. But the most frightening passage in Rodica Dunca's confessions is this:

"Because of hunger, we often put ourselves in extreme situations. And the methods by which they kept us away from food probably could have killed us."

ProSport: "What were those methods?"
Rodica Dunca: "I remember that in 1979, before the Fort Worth World Championships, Nadia was a few pounds too heavy. We were on a training camp in Germany. Geza Pozsar, our choregrapher, and Bela Karolyi slept in our room with us. In front of the door to the toilet. When we needed to go to the toilet, we had to pee with the door open."

ProSport: "Why?"
Rodica Dunca: "They were afraid that we'd somehow drink water. But we'd go into the bathroom, do what we had to do and wait a while before flushing the toilet. We'd climb onto the toilet with a glass in our hands and drink from the cistern over our heads. That's how we drank our fill."

ProSport: "You could have gotten some disease that way."
Rodica Dunca: "That didn't matter. The same thing happened when we took a shower. We were watched and weren't allowed to close the curtain, so we couldn't ingest any water."

ProSport: "What did you eat before competitions?"
Rodica Dunca: "In the morning we'd get one slice of salami, two nuts, and a glass of milk. In the evening we'd get the same menu, only without the nuts."

ProSport: "Did you ever eat to your heart's content?"
Rodica Dunca: "Only twice in my career as a gymnast."

ProSport: "Just twice?"
Rodica Dunca: "No, actually, there was a third time. We were at an exhibition in Spain. One time we left the hotel. I don't know why the coaches weren't around at the time. At a few meters' distance from the building there was a field of strawberries. We all swooped down on them like termites and ate as many strawberries as we wanted. But it came out later, because the owner of the strawberries made a scene at the hotel."

ProSport: "Did you ever suffer any serious health problems?"
Rodica Dunca: "Many times. Broken feet, a broken shoulder, among other things. I remember that when we began to menstruate, the assistant took us to her office and gave us an injection. The injection probably contained hormones, because after that, I didn't menstruate for almost two years. The same thing happened to the other girls."

The same abuse has said to have happened in the old Soviet Union, East Germany, and China. Like I said before, it was a different time and a different place. The Karolyis did what they thought they had to do in order to make Ceausescu happy. When they defected here, the methods of their abuse changed to mental because while we in the US protect children from the physical abuse, we often turn away from the mental abuse.

Kim is also the first chioce to take over for teh Karolyis when they retire after the 2012 games.

One more tidbit - The gymnast who has spoken out in this story in Gertrud Eberle. She was forced to change her name to Emilia because Gertrud is a Hungarian name and Hungarians were very much discriminated against. She competed under the name Emilia Eberle. When she came to the US, she went back to the name Trudi.

I posted this tidbit so others could see how messed up Romanian Gym was.
