So.

After reading the scuttlebutt about 300,000 points on fireworks and 85 ghosts for the green car, I am unimpressed. I get the feeling they will reduce these numbers a bit, but probably something like 250,000. Thanks, VMK. I play on a Mac, and for some reason, fireworks and Haunted Mansion run very poorly on a Mac, even a tricked out G5 like mine (lest any pc boy deigns to show his arrogance about "too bad if your computer is not fast enough," meet me out back, kid. My G5 can beat up your Windows machine)... canadian and CL_Nedakh can attest to my extraordinary speed at vacuuming up ghosts this morning. All that means I will not be getting green car magic, and I really don't care. I've been thinking along the same lines as Chickysmom (who, if anybody needs reminding, is completely wonderful and VMK is going to be much worse off without her kindness)... what does it really matter about the quests? Sure, it's swell to have the car magic, and I can see how the Quest machine would be fun, but I am not going to lose any sleep over it. None of us should, but I am not here to preach, just to bury Caesar. Something like that.

I think Tomorrowland was launched with way too many problems, and if anyone wants to remind me that Disneyland's first day was plagued with problems I cordially invite them to shut up and stop comparing apples to aardvarks. At this point, the people behind the scenes of VMK should expect huge crowds online when they open a new land. They should expect the entire community to want to play the new stuff, and yet VMK went down what, three times on Tuesday? And the speed was insufferable, and the bugs abound. This is sloppy testing, sloppy planning, and sloppy execution. And then the VMK staff gets to hear us complain endlessly because the testers and programmers and logistics managers didn't do their job. All this crap for a free game.

So why do we complain? What right do we have, other than a certain emotional investment, and (at this point) thousands of hours of our time invested, to complain? Sure, it's Disney, but not exactly. It looked cool when it came out, and it got better, but then we started to accept little bits of absurd restrictions, like the wretched dictionary (don't do the dictionary dance, just find a way to say whatever you need to say without violating the terms and agreements!). And then the pin stuff started to get out of control (10,000 for Bat Magic, and now you can't get one of the quests completed if you did not have 10,000 credits to buy that Bat Magic... ridiculous!), and the more people who have joined, the more rude and crass people who have begun to erode the magic away (for the love of everything, who cares if someone is blocking you in the Pirates Game lobby after you complete a game? It's not like you have to go anywhere to play another game, and it's not all that difficult to re-enter the room... and if you want somebody to move, and that somebody is me, you had better learn the word "please" or go ahead and report me for refusing to cater to the ill-mannered "move" that you bleat out because you feel too superior or too busy to precede it with a "please." It's not that difficult to be courteous, and VMK could use a lot more pleasantries, especially now that everyone is so whacked off about the Tomorrowland situations.). But VMK is not quite Disney. It is a marketing tool, moreso than the Direct-To-Video sequels and Ariel's fish sticks t.v. dinners and maybe even more of a marketing tool than the Disney Stores... all of us VMK players want to go to a Disney park, no matter if it is the West coast or the East coast or somewhere in Japan or France (does anyone really want to go to the Hong Kong park? Didn't think so...). VMK is a completely brilliant marketing tool that makes us, more than ever, long to spend a week or two at a place of pure magic, and it makes us want to do this by turning us into addicts, of a sort, to yet another product the Disney corporation has churned out. I don't know if they counted on this strong a community, and I can tell you quite honestly I never thought I would become buddies with anyone I met on an online video game, but here we all are, and I have the sincere privilege of counting many of you as dear friends. Is that Disney magic? Who knows. Maybe. But it came out of us, not out of a game that is currently frustrating most of us, and irritating some of us to the point of wanting to quit because we feel betrayed by this originally-benevolent game, this harmless diversion that has taken over many of our lives. It's a bloody good thing they close VMK every night, or some of you would not sleep at all. Or bathe.

And that's what I have to say. If you've read this far, congratulations! Find me and I'll give you a Ned pin or something.

WOW
okay, I have never heard anyone use the word "scuttlebutt" in a sentence before. (although I did hear someone say 'persnickety' the other day, which I thought was cool) so hey, props to you green boy!!

Wow. Hagen. That was just... awesome. The absolute perfect blend of frustration, disgust and snarkiness. My Stitch Hat off to you.

I may actually have to save this post as a memory in the future.

:rotfl: oh my I have never heard of that word before.

But yes I totally agree. I just planned my April vacation in order to get a stitch hat to only find out I will not be recieving one which made even me cry over a silly hat. I used to think as going to Disney something so magical and now ALL I can think about is VMK and it TOTALLY ruins my love for Disney. Instead of making me want to go, it makes me repelled to go now. I'll be leaving in a few days..I'm not sure if this will be my last Disneyland trip ever and my last WDW trip..thanks a lot VMK :furious: ruining my magic I've had for Disney ever since I was 18 months old.

I probably should not say anything because I've only been playing VMK since Christmas. What do I know, right?

I know that I am more tired of the whining on this board than any of the problems I've encountered on VMK. The cry baby posts have reached a fever pitch since the opening of Tomorrowland. It's a new land that adds an incredible new level interactivity to the game!

Tomorrowland opened while I was at work. When I got home it was slow but workable and I finished my first quest. Yesterday, I finished all the quests but the green Autopia one. I'm disappointed that I won't be able to get that pin now. I am disappointed but not frustrated. And hey, I have two pink car pins! There was one time that I answered a question right and the quest called it wrong. I changed rooms before I answered it again and it let me proceed. I consider that a fairly minor hiccup.

I build web sites for a living. I have to deal with browser quirks screwing up my layouts every day. I can only imagine what it must be like for the VMK folks. Browsers, Shockwave, system resources and operating systems all have to be factored in every time they make a change. And just exactly how do you propose that they test the game under load without launching it? There will always be bugs when software products update no matter how much testing you do. It is a fact of life. Learn to deal with it. Windows users have!

I have 10,000 credits saved up so far. I should have the 20K I need for my Quest Generator by the weekend. I'm excited! I love the challenge of working to get it and I'm looking forward to using it creatively. I had to practice for months to get fireworks magic. I don't mind a few days of saving up credits to gain the power to create my own quests!

Lest you think my VMK experience has been perfect, I have to disable my sound card before I log onto VMK. I don't know what the conflict is. I like playing the game so I just turn the card off. No sound is a fairly big problem but it doesn't really bother me. Maybe I'm just a half full kind of guy.

I love these boards because people here have been very kind to me. You've all helped me a lot. The complaining is getting old though. Complaining about taken, complaining about Tomorrowland, complaining about the Ride-A-Thon, complaining about Bat Magic, complaining about the outside mini-games... everytime there is something new, someone has a new complaint.

I'll make you a deal. If you quit VMK, I'll quit the DIS.

great words of wisdom hagen. I TOTALLY agree with you in most cases. Just watch out in that post, bc you wrote a bad word and children do read this board.

Yeah, if someone is blocking your object for a quest, dont yell out MOVE! Just go to a less popular direction. Today I saw a girl yelling Move over while she was doing her quest. I told her nicely to "Wait her turn because other people are doing the quests just like her, and they are reading the hints, just like you will."
Guess what her responce was?
GET A LIFE, LOOSER! (of course she dicitonary danced)

----------------------------------------------------
What you said about pirates, even more true. You can join a game back there.

Finally, tomorrowland. Tomorrowland I am not upset about because it was a rushed area to make. It was not originally supposed to be quest land, it was meant to be like the other areas of VMK. I went to DLR during Jan. and asked why tomorrowland isn't out to my tourguide, and she said,"Tomorrowland had alot of troubles. They're changing their mind everyday on what to do there. its also going to be the most complex area because it needs to look technologically advanced." Everest Month goes by, and still no sign. Why? Tomorrowland had the idea of in game quests, which is harder to make.

Hagen - for those very kind words I shall tap on your glass helmet, breaking it, and give you a little smooch on those green, popcorn butter covered lips! lol Thanks for thinking of me friend.

scuttlebutt : One of the all time great descriptive sounding words !

All of the above is true for me.....yes I am an addict........The game makes me want to go to the parks even more ( but I dont think about getting the cards that much )
AND I have also made dear friends...........What else could be better ?
The Magic ? hagen is right ....WE make it happen....we all take away a little pixie dust with us every day we interact here and on the game.
With all of us coming from so many walks of life, different ages, countries, and who knows else, there is bound to be differences of opinions. BUT we all still have something in common that brings us together !

That is where the magic is !

That is this community !

Don't know why I missed this Hagen post before, unless I was taking one of my 2 or 3 month breaks to relieve my brain of many of the things he describes here.

So here's a bump again. As usual, well said Hagen. Thanks for a great read.

i think my main problem with vmk is all the bugs, it does get annoying after a while. but as far as vmk ruining my love for disney itself. it hasnt. if it has for other people then those people need to just come to the grim reality that vmk is a game. i mean virtual is in the name. it doesnt exist. i mean i went to disney and didn't do one single quest, i guess that may seem like heresy. but i dont care. it is a good marketing tool though.

Can I just have the ned pin? :rotfl:
