As you all know I lost a computer to a Virus the week of April 15th.


Well I have another virus on the new computer this Virus is an email virus.

If anyone of you have received a email from janikaa@msn.com


Please run your virus scan now.


I do not know what else to tell you right now since Norton's is closed til Monday.

I do not know where this virus has come from but this is my primary email acct.and it seems I picked it up on 4-16.


I am so so sorry if you received a email from me with this virus.

I DO NOT open Attachments and MSN said you do not have to anymore.

I am so mad about this.

Will keep you updated as I find out more.

Sorry to hear of your computer woes.
I know what it feels like to get a nasty virus. I had one that contained three different HUGE files that almost ate up my entire hard drive.
My daughter's boyfriend, a comp sci major, was able to get into the "guts" of the hard drive and did some fancy fixing and all has been well
I am curious, did you want to buy a WHOLE new computer? When this virus hit me that was my initial concern. My daughter's boyfriend told me if he could not eliminate the virus, all I would have to buy is a new hard drive.
Good luck with containing the last virus. I can't undertand why people make these programs up and end them. I think it is so devious!

This is not the case. There is no way a computer virus can physically ruin a hard drive. It can, however, make it unusable unless the hard drive is reformatted.

In my case, despite reformatting, the virus still existed. He said some remnants of a virus can still exist within one's hard drive even after reformatting. He had to rename something, like I said I am no computer genius, after the reformatting to further correct the damage done by this virus.
I am only repeating what I was told by this soon to be MIT grad. I don't want to open any debates, I just wanted to pass on what I was told.

I am going to agree with Figment here.That is exactly what happen to my computer.We reformatted numerous times to no avail even did a FDISK several times nothing helped.

Figment I wanted a new computer anyway but also wanted to keep my old.Which you are right I will have to replace the harddrive.But I had to have a computer ASAP for Income Tax time.So I went right out and got one. NOW this.It is coming from one of the rewards programs I am sure but which one.But Milesource is one that I use this email addy with.

Mal, Just to make your headache worse...if I did get the virus from you, can I sue you for a new computer?

I am not sure which virus it was. I was so upset and thought sure the damage could not be repaired. John, my daughter's boyfriend, showed me these three little "smiley" faces once he got into the "bowels" of my hard drive. He identified these as the virus but I don't remember asking the name of it. I just can't believe people can be so mean as to intentionally attempt to destroy other people's property without provoacation.

I also agree about Milesource and viruses. My computer is recently giving me a lot of "this compute has performed an illegal procdure and will close down" messages, blues screens and freezing during my attempts to do the Milesource program especialy!
I have also had recent problems with my Norton Systemworks program, which includes Norton Antivirus. I occasionally get the message that the Norton Auto Protect is disabled but n the task bar when I right click on the icon it states it is enabled.
I have, once again, asked John, DD BF, what he thinks is going on. He thinks I may have gotten either another virus or two programs are in conflict. I will rely on his expertise to help me correct this also. Thank God, he is so willing to help me, I can't imagine how much all these repairs would be costing me if it were not for his help. But then again, he has my daughter by his side, so I think that is payment enough, don't you agree? LOL

Thanks for the heads-up Mal. Hope things get resolved for you on Monday. I know DH has all 3 of our computers set up with three different AV and firewall systems, usually all the "problems" get by Norton though-makes me concerned for that program. Good luck & let us know what happens.

I'm sorry that you are all having problems with viruses.

Boot sector viruses can be very, very nasty. Depending on the virus. fdisk usually takes care of things but sometimes the little buggers can hide and you need to take further corrective action. This can take a long time and maybe it's easier and cheaper to just replace to hard drive.

However ... I stand by my original statement that you don't have to replace the hard drive. It may be smarter to do so, but it's not a requirement .

Sorry to hear about your recent virus problems, Mal. I handle these type of things all the time at work. Most recently, our company has been hit by viruses/worms that don't have to be opened or clicked on. You can activate these things just by visiting an infected website or clicking on an e-mail message in your inbox. I usually have to see what the virus is detected as, and then investigate the "fix" on Norton's website.

Just a friendly reminder to everyone out there: be sure to have anti-virus software installed AND keep your virus definitions updated. It only takes a few minutes to do this, but it can save you a bunch of time and avoid problems later. The more often you do this, the less time it takes to download the definitions/updates each time.

I'm sure most of you already do this, but from my experience providing user support - many don't.

I do keep up to date.Norton did not pick up either of these virus and I just ran the fix for the Virus MSN thought I had. Was not it or so it says.


Have to wait to call Norton's tomorrow.



Robin- I was not saying you were not correct in your statement but having already spent 25.00 to take the computer in I would rather put $75 in a new hard drive than to keep wasting money trying to fix this one.

I think I got the virus as well. About 2 weeks ago my computer just froze I couldn't even get it to got to the desk top. The only way I fixed it was to do a Factory reinstall and lose EVERYTHING!Now I'm having problems with connecting the printer, it keeps saying that it can't comunicate with the printer. I don't know... has this happened to anyone else?

Update on second computer

Concenus is that I did not get the virus had the virus emails in my inbox but computer was not infected.


So all is safe now as far as me sending out emails.

Found this at Nortons since I received an email at my yahoo addy>> "Email spoofing
Some variants of this worm use a technique known as "spoofing." If it does this, it chooses at random an address that it finds on an infected computer as the "From:" address that it uses when it performs its mass-mailing routine. Numerous cases have been reported in which users of uninfected computers receive complaints that they have sent an infected message to someone else.

For example, Linda Anderson is using a computer that is infected with W32.Klez.E@mm; Linda is not using a antivirus program or does not have current virus definitions. When W32.Klez.gen@mm performs its emailing routine, it finds the email address of Harold Logan. It inserts Harold's email address into the "From:" line of an infected email that it then sends to Janet Bishop. Janet then contacts Harold and complains that he sent her infected email, but when Harold scans his computer, Norton AntiVirus does not find anything--as would be expected--because his computer is not infected.

If you are using a current version of Norton AntiVirus, have the most recent virus definitions, and a full system scan with Norton AntiVirus set to scan all files does not find anything, you can be confident that your computer is not infected with this worm."
