Ever pay at check in to upgrade to cl?

I am asking because I might ask about upgrading when we check in, if I have some $$ saved, and if the room is not on the second floor( poly). That second floor is such a deal breaker for me I don't even want to make a cl reservation. But if everything fell into place at the time could I do this? I would be happy without, just thinking it would be a fun surprise if I could pull it off.

Yep! And we did it at Poly! We stayed first night in a garden room, next morning paid cash and moved to CL room, second floor. We were originally booked WL CL, long story! As long as there is a room available it shouldn't be a problem.

We've never done it, but as the pp said, if there is availability you certainly can pay to upgrade at check in. Keep in mind, though, that if you used a room discount for what you currently have booked, I think upgrades at check in are usually the difference between what you paid and rack rate.

Yes, the way I interpret it is since the promotion you are booked under is no longer running and/or rooms may no longer be available under that promotion, you'd be subject to rack rate in your upgraded room. The discount doesn't carry over just because you had it. Something to factor in.

We did it on our trip to the GF in May. I just asked if there was anything available in CL because I was interested in switching, they said they would check and came back and quoted me a price that was way less than if I had done it in the first place. I guess that was our pixie dust for the week

I definitely agree with the posts about discounts not applying to upgrades upon checkin. If you want to guarantee a discount book CL in advance. As twinkle's experience demonstrates, however, you can get lucky. Disney always wants to take more money from you if it can. So if you come at a time when there are a lot of CL rooms available (and thus would go empty otherwise) Disney would rather have you pay more to upgrade (but still less than the price difference) to the CL room than not.

Never had to pay the difference in rack rates, Never, and that's with 50+ visits. Maybe it all depends on the CM you get, but I guess I must be getting all nice CMs all these years!

ITA, the key is availibilty when considering what you will pay.
Whether it be the difference between a discount and rack rate, less than that, OR a free upgrade!

When we checked into room at YC in Nov 2010 I asked if any bigger rooms available that our family might need more space and how much would it cost? I was told that he didn't know and I had to come back the next day.

We were only there 3 nights so i didn't bother. Also we arrived at the hotel around 10pm.

I have done it with a BB. I called CRO and upgraded from the parking lot at WL before we checked in. The only reason I didn't do it the night before we left was because the system was down. If you are booked with a room only, the discount hasn't expired, and there is availability it's not a problem. I would call CRO. It might be less of a hastle then finding a CM at the front desk that knows how to do it.

Actually once your're booked with a certain discount you can still make changes and upgrades with that discount even if it has expired.

If I was able to pull it off it would be a miracle. I would need two connecting rooms, and I would not want the no balcony second floor. I don't think cro can confirm room locations, and to get two connecting rooms to boot would be quite a feat, lol. I guess I can always ask and have my acceptable price limit well planned in advance.
